For U.S. calendar-year taxpayers, the next ordinary federal estimated-tax deadline is January 15, 2027, covering income earned from September 1 through December 31, 2026. The September 15, 2026 installment date has passed. These federal dates do not set state or local deadlines.

When are quarterly estimated taxes due?

Federal estimated-tax installments are not spaced at equal three-month intervals. The ordinary schedule for calendar-year taxpayers in 2026 is:

Income payment period Federal estimated-tax due date
January 1–March 31, 2026 April 15, 2026
April 1–May 31, 2026 June 15, 2026
June 1–August 31, 2026 September 15, 2026
September 1–December 31, 2026 January 15, 2027

If a due date falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, the next business day generally applies. See the IRS Publication 505 (2026), Tax Withholding and Estimated Tax, and its estimated-tax FAQ for the applicable schedule and current guidance.

Do I have to pay estimated taxes if freelancing is a side job?

Having a regular job does not automatically remove the need to account for taxes on freelance or gig income. The general federal test is whether you expect to owe at least $1,000 after withholding and refundable credits, and whether your withholding and credits will be less than the smaller of 90% of your current-year tax or 100% of your prior-year tax. For certain higher-income taxpayers, the prior-year comparison is 110%. Exceptions and details apply, so use the tax-year-specific Form 1040-ES and Publication 505 rather than treating these thresholds as a personalized calculation.

Estimated payments can cover both income tax and self-employment tax. The IRS describes federal taxes as “pay-as-you-go”: you generally need to pay most tax as income comes in, not just when you file your annual return. Paying a balance at filing does not necessarily avoid a penalty if required installments were too small or late. See the IRS pages on managing taxes for gig work and the underpayment of estimated tax by individuals penalty.

A separate filing rule can also apply: IRS guidance generally requires a return when net self-employment earnings from gig work are $400 or more, including part-time or temporary work. That return-filing threshold is not the same as the estimated-payment test.

Can I increase withholding at my day job instead?

If you have wage income, you may be able to ask your employer to withhold additional tax from your paychecks to cover some or all of the tax on side work. The IRS points taxpayers to its Tax Withholding Estimator and Form W-4 for adjusting withholding. This can be useful when paycheck withholding is available and predictable; estimated payments remain an option for people without wages or whose income and withholding do not cover the required installments. Whether either approach meets your tax obligations depends on your circumstances and payments already made.

How do I estimate and pay?

Form 1040-ES helps estimate tax using expected income, deductions, and credits. Revisit the estimate when your income or circumstances change. If income arrives unevenly during the year, the annualized-income installment method may affect how required installments are calculated; consult Publication 505 and the Form 2210 instructions rather than assuming four equal payments fit your situation.

  1. Review the tax-year-specific Form 1040-ES and Publication 505 to estimate what you owe and identify the applicable installment.
  2. Choose an IRS payment channel: online account, Direct Pay, phone, IRS mobile app, or another listed option on the IRS payment page.
  3. Before submitting, verify the tax year and payment type so the payment is credited as intended.

An estimated payment is separate from filing your annual tax return. A filing extension does not automatically extend the time to pay tax due with a return, and it does not move estimated-tax installment dates. Check IRS payment and filing guidance for your situation.

What if I missed an installment?

Paying an amount due when you file may not erase a possible underpayment penalty for an earlier installment. The IRS says a penalty may apply when you did not pay enough by each payment-period due date, even if you are due a refund when you file. Review the IRS underpayment-penalty guidance and Publication 505 to understand how payment timing and your circumstances affect the calculation; do not assume the next installment date cures a missed one.

Do state estimated-tax deadlines match the federal schedule?

Not necessarily. The dates here are ordinary U.S. federal dates for calendar-year individual taxpayers. State and local requirements and deadlines depend on the jurisdiction, so check the relevant tax authority for any nonfederal estimated payments.
