Freedom ended the Boxing Week promotion on January 9, 2026; a later BYOP discount also ended in March 2026.
What Freedom’s $9 BYOP discount offered
The promotion was structured as an ongoing $9 monthly BYOP credit, rather than necessarily a permanent reduction to the plan’s standard price. For example, the reported $49 plan became effectively $40 before tax after the credit.

The credit was available to qualifying customers who activated a new line or migrated an existing line to an eligible in-market plan during the promotion, supplied their own compatible phone and stayed on an eligible plan. It was not an automatic discount for every existing Freedom customer.

The original plan lineup was reported from Freedom’s website on December 22, 2025:

The $34 and $39 plans were reported as unchanged, so they should not be described as receiving the same $9 discount. The effective prices above were before tax and could differ from a final bill because of taxes, partial-month charges, add-ons and other account adjustments.

“Ongoing” did not mean guaranteed forever
The promotion was described as continuing while the customer remained active on an eligible plan as a BYOP customer. In practical terms, the credit could be lost if the customer:

- Changed to an ineligible rate plan;
- Completed a hardware upgrade or obtained a phone through Freedom;
- Stopped meeting the promotion’s eligibility requirements; or
- Combined the offer with another promotion that did not permit stacking.
That makes “ongoing while eligible” more accurate than “lifetime.” Customers should not assume that the credit transfers to a financed phone or survives a plan migration.
Timeline: the Boxing Week offer and later promotions
- December 22, 2025: Freedom’s $9 BYOP credit was reported as part of its Boxing Week plans.
- January 9, 2026: Freedom ended the Boxing Week promotions and removed the discount from the reported holiday plans, according to MobileSyrup.
- February 17, 2026: Freedom reportedly brought back a $9 BYOP credit on selected plans under a separate promotion.
- March 10, 2026: Coverage reported that the later BYOP discount had ended.
Accordingly, readers should treat the December Boxing Week pricing as historical. Freedom’s current BYOP page is the appropriate place to check current prices, eligibility and promotions, but it should not be used to assume that the December 2025 prices are still available.

Who benefited most?
The deal made the most sense for someone who already owned an unlocked, compatible phone, wanted substantial data in Canada, the U.S. and Mexico, and expected to keep the same plan for the long term. The monthly credit could lower wireless costs without adding a device-financing obligation.
It was a weaker fit for someone who needed a new phone immediately, expected to upgrade through Freedom, frequently changed plans or needed international roaming beyond the included allowances. “Canada/U.S./Mexico” also did not mean unlimited worldwide roaming: the plans had separate, plan-specific Roam Beyond allowances, and some listed allowances were one-time amounts.

BYOP checklist
BYOP means that you supply the handset instead of financing or leasing one through Freedom. Before relying on a BYOP offer, confirm that:
- The phone is unlocked and not subject to financing obligations with another carrier.
- It supports Freedom’s required LTE and 5G bands, VoLTE and other network requirements.
- Its physical SIM or eSIM setup works with the activation method you plan to use.
- The device is suitable for the Freedom coverage you need, including travel in the U.S. or Mexico.
- You have saved the exact plan name, offer terms, order confirmation and any written statement about the credit.
Buying a phone outright can preserve the economics of BYOP, but include the handset’s cost, repairs and warranty in your calculation. A Freedom hardware upgrade may reduce the upfront cost of a phone while ending eligibility for a BYOP credit. Freedom’s TradeUp documentation explains that its program can involve returning an eligible phone under specified end-of-term conditions.

If the credit does not appear
Some community reports described customers not seeing the credit clearly in the account interface, although representatives later confirmed it or it appeared on a bill. This is anecdotal, not a universal billing rule. If you expected the credit:
- Check the first full bill, not only the plan summary in your account.
- Confirm that the plan name and data allowance match the promotional plan.
- Confirm that the line is still recorded as BYOP.
- Ask Freedom support for written confirmation of the credit.
- Escalate with your saved offer, order confirmation and bill if the promised credit is missing.
Do not assume that autopay, loyalty, home-internet, referral or win-back discounts stack with the $9 credit unless the applicable terms explicitly allow it.
Verdict
Freedom’s 2025 Boxing Week BYOP promotion was potentially valuable for customers with a compatible phone who wanted large Canada/U.S./Mexico plans and could remain on the same eligible rate plan. But the advertised $40, $50, $60 and $70 prices were effective prices after a conditional $9 credit, not universal base prices—and the original offer expired in January 2026. Check Freedom’s current BYOP offers rather than relying on the old Boxing Week deal.
