The Royal Mint’s 2025 Freddie Mercury coin marks two 1985 milestones: Queen’s Live Aid performance and the release of Mercury’s first solo studio album, Mr. Bad Guy. It is part of the Mint’s Music Legends series, and the design references Mercury’s stage presence as well as his vocal range.
What does the 40th anniversary refer to?
The Royal Mint announced the coin on 18 November 2025, linking it to the 40th anniversaries of Queen’s July 1985 Live Aid performance and Mercury’s 1985 debut solo studio album, Mr. Bad Guy. The release is part of the Mint’s Music Legends series. The Royal Mint’s launch announcement says Mercury Songs Ltd officially approved the coin. Mercury’s sister, Kashmira Bulsara, visited the Mint and struck the first coin.
What does the coin design show?
The reverse depicts Mercury centre stage mid-performance, with his signature beside the portrait. The Royal Mint says the musical stave around the edge represents his four-octave vocal range, and the studded armband edge draws on the outfit he wore at Live Aid. Some versions add colour depicting his iconic yellow jacket.
For its 2025 1/40oz gold proof, the Mint names Henry Gray as reverse designer and Martin Jennings as obverse designer. Those credits are documented for that particular version, not necessarily every coin in the collection. The Royal Mint’s gold-proof specification provides the details.

Which versions are listed, and how do their specifications differ?
Listings describe more than one denomination and finish, so details for one version should not be applied to another. The Freddie Mercury official store lists a UK £5 coin and says the range includes gold proof, silver proof and Brilliant Uncirculated editions; the listing does not establish that all those editions are currently in stock.
| Version | Documented details | Availability or price context |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 UK £5 coin | Cupro-nickel; 38.61 mm diameter; 28.28 g. The store says the collection includes gold proof, silver proof and Brilliant Uncirculated editions, but does not tie those finishes to every listed specification. | The Freddie Mercury official store listed it for $23.50 and marked it sold out when accessed. This is a recorded listing, not a current quote. |
| 2025 1/40oz gold proof | 50p denomination; 999.9 fine gold; 0.80 g; 8.00 mm diameter; proof quality; maximum mintage 1,260. Reverse designer: Henry Gray; obverse designer: Martin Jennings. | The Royal Mint specification gives a maximum mintage, not the number sold or remaining in stock. |
The two versions have different face values, metals, weights and dimensions. The 50p denomination and gold specifications belong specifically to the 1/40oz gold proof; they are not specifications for the £5 coin. The official store’s £5 listing is at the Freddie Mercury official store.

What did the coin cost at launch, and can you still buy it?
The Royal Mint’s 18 November 2025 launch announcement said the collection would be available from 9 a.m. that day, with prices starting at £18.50. That was the launch price floor, not a current price for any particular version. The official-store £5 listing showed sold out when accessed; stock and prices can change.
Before buying, compare the exact denomination, finish, metal, dimensions, packaging, seller identity, live price and stock status. A product title alone is not enough to confirm that a listing matches the version you want. The reviewed sources do not establish a current full inventory or secondary-market price, nor verify a current Amazon listing.

What is known about demand?
The Royal Mint reported that nearly half a million Music Legends coins had been delivered to enthusiasts in 108 countries. That is a series-wide figure, not a sales total for the Freddie Mercury issue. The launch and product information cited here do not provide an issue-specific sales total.
At the first-strike event, Royal Mint Director of Commemorative Coin Rebecca Morgan described Kashmira Bulsara’s visit as moving. Bulsara called striking the coin an emotional and proud moment. The Associated Press reported her saying that a royal coin was a fitting recognition of Mercury’s musical talents. These comments explain the personal significance of the launch, but do not indicate how many coins have sold.
