Franklin Templeton’s Head of Franklin Crypto, Christopher Perkins, argues that artificial intelligence and crypto can reinforce and accelerate one another over time. He also allows for a near-term tension: both may compete for investment capital. His view is a thesis about how the technologies could interact, not proof that they already do.
What does Perkins mean by AI and crypto being “friends”?
In a CNBC interview transcript reproduced in a LinkedIn post, Perkins called AI and crypto “very, very symbiotic technologies that are going to accelerate each other.” In this context, “friends” means he sees the technologies as potentially complementary over time—not that they are identical, that one depends on the other, or that their growth is guaranteed.
That distinction matters for personal-finance readers: this is an executive’s perspective on two technology sectors, not an investment recommendation or evidence that either sector will outperform.
Can AI and crypto compete as well as complement each other?
Yes, in Perkins’s framing. He raised the possibility of competition between AI and crypto for capital in the near term, while also arguing for longer-term technological complementarity. These are different claims: investors can choose between competing opportunities even if the underlying technologies might eventually support or accelerate one another.

The interview transcript does not quantify that competition or establish that AI or crypto is currently drawing money away from the other. Treat both the near-term tension and the longer-term synergy as Perkins’s views, not measured market outcomes.
Who is Christopher Perkins?
Franklin Templeton’s company profile identifies Perkins as Head of Franklin Crypto and says his remit includes scouting tokens, protocols, and fintech startups for institutional clients. A separate Bloomberg Crypto interview transcript describes him as the incoming head of Franklin Crypto and discusses institutional demand, tokenization, and crypto markets operating continuously. That context helps explain his focus; it does not show that AI caused tokenization or institutional interest.
What does the claim mean for investors?
Perkins’s comments are best read as a way to think about possible interaction between two sectors—not as a reason on their own to buy crypto, AI-related investments, or both. The comments provide no quantified relationship, investment-performance evidence, or specific allocation guidance.
- Separate a technology thesis from an investment case: possible synergy does not establish a token’s value or an investment’s expected return.
- Consider near-term portfolio competition separately from long-term technical complementarity; one does not rule out the other.
- Look for evidence tied to the particular investment, including its risks and how it may fit your goals, rather than treating broad sector commentary as a personal recommendation.
What related coverage adds—and what it does not
A later Pomp Podcast episode listing mentions crypto hacks, AI-related cyber threats, institutional crypto demand, and macroeconomic factors. Those subjects show that AI-related security concerns and crypto-market issues appear in adjacent discussion, but the listing does not independently substantiate Perkins’s claim that AI and crypto will accelerate one another.
