Did Kalshi’s 15-Minute Gold Markets Overtake Ether? The Evidence So Far

Kalshi’s early 15-minute gold activity drew attention, but the published figures do not show it overtaking Ether: the available comparison was with Bitcoin, and commodity totals combine three markets.

No published like-for-like figures in the available reporting confirm that Kalshi’s 15-minute gold market overtook Ether. An August 2026 report compared gold with Bitcoin, not Ether, and said gold’s daily volume remained far below that of 15-minute crypto markets. The early commodity-market figures are notable, but they combine gold, silver and oil.

What the reported figures show—and what they do not

Gaming America reported on August 18, 2026, that Kalshi had introduced 15-minute up-or-down event contracts on gold, silver and oil about two weeks earlier. The report described the contracts as among Kalshi’s most popular markets outside sports and crypto. Its comparison, however, does not establish that gold surpassed Ether.

For the period July 31 through August 14, the three 15-minute commodity markets together recorded $14,110,739 in volume across 552,090 trades. Average trade size was $30.43, and the largest trade was $46,759. Those are combined gold, silver and WTI figures—not gold-only totals. Gaming America’s August 18 report also said each commodity exceeded $1 million in volume every weekday from August 5 through the reporting period, and that the markets saw more than 550,000 trades on August 14.

The crypto comparison was with Bitcoin

Gaming America reported that Kalshi’s 15-minute gold market had a daily-volume high of just under $8 million as of August 14. It contrasted that with 15-minute Bitcoin markets, whose daily volume was rarely below $100 million during the comparison period. That is a gold-versus-Bitcoin comparison; the report did not provide an Ether volume series.

  • ✔️Each Gold Eagle is a sovereign monetized bullion coin fully guaranteed by the U.S. Mint.

It also did not define a gold-over-Ether ranking by daily, weekly or cumulative volume, trade count, open interest or another measure. Without matching figures for the same period, contract interval and activity measure, the headline claim that gold overtook Ether remains unverified.

Why early gold-market activity can look large

These are short-duration event contracts: participants trade on whether an outcome will be up or down over a defined window. Quick settlement can let traders enter another position in a successive window, so many trades or substantial cumulative volume need not mean that many distinct people participated or that a position was held for long. Gaming America suggested repeated trading and bot activity may have contributed, but described those points as interpretation informed partly by online trading communities—not audited data on who traded or why.

Kalshi’s April 15, 2026, announcement framed its commodities expansion as a way to access commodity markets through event contracts rather than traditional futures, and listed gold and silver among its markets. That is the company’s description of its product; it does not establish that a particular contract is an effective hedge or support the gold-versus-Ether comparison. Kalshi’s commodities expansion announcement explains the company’s framing.

How to read Kalshi’s later $400 million commodities figure

In September 2026, Kalshi said its commodities category had reached more than $400 million in trading volume in seven months and was more than four times the volume of crypto markets at the same point in their lifecycles. Reuters also reported Kalshi’s claim that monthly commodities volume exceeded $400 million and was four times crypto volume at the same stage. These are broad category-level claims attributed to Kalshi, not figures for 15-minute gold or a direct comparison with Ether.

The distinction matters: category totals can include different commodities, market formats and contract durations. They cannot be used to infer that one gold contract exceeded one Ether contract. See Kalshi’s September 8 category-growth post and Reuters’ report via Investing.com.

What a fair gold-versus-Ether comparison requires

To determine whether the claim is true, a comparison needs gold and Ether figures that match on the following points:

  • Contract interval: 15-minute markets only, not all gold or crypto contracts.
  • Period and cutoff: The same start and end dates for both markets.
  • Measure: The same definition of volume or activity, such as traded notional, trade count or open interest.
  • Aggregation: The same basis, such as daily totals or cumulative volume per market.
  • Data source: A clearly identified publisher, with any limits on auditing or verification stated.

The available reporting does not provide that pairwise dataset. Until comparable figures are published, the defensible conclusion is that Kalshi’s new 15-minute commodity markets attracted meaningful early activity, while an Ether-specific crossover has not been demonstrated.
