Fortescue would not renew Sodexo’s catering contracts at four Pilbara camps in 2024, PerthNow reported on 8 February that year. The report tied the decision to worker complaints and quoted one unnamed Christmas Creek worker describing the food as “pretty much always disgusting.” That was one person’s account—not a survey result or an independently verified finding about meals across all four camps.
What Fortescue decided in 2024
PerthNow reported that Fortescue would not renew Sodexo’s contracts at Christmas Creek, Cloudbreak, Kantama and Nyidinghu. The article said The West Australian understood workers had made numerous complaints, but it did not quantify them or publish a representative survey. PerthNow’s 8 February 2024 report linked the decision to the complaints; it did not establish that every meal, or food at every camp, was poor.
What the worker said—and what the quote establishes
An unnamed Christmas Creek worker told PerthNow: “The food they serve is pretty much always disgusting, sometimes it’s completely inedible and are meals I wouldn’t even give to my pets.” The striking phrase in the headline is the worker’s own characterization. The report does not identify the worker, say how many people shared that view, or provide a food-safety audit or other independent measure of meal quality.
Sodexo’s response
PerthNow reported that a spokeswoman for Sodexo’s Australian arm thanked Fortescue for its “partnership over the years” and said the company took “pride in our team’s spirit of service.” The article did not name the spokeswoman or include a detailed response to the specific food criticism.

What happened after Sodexo
A Radio France Internationale story republished by ModernGhana on 15 January 2025 reported that Civeo had secured the Fortescue contract Sodexo lost in 2024. That is later reporting, but it does not establish the exact contractor, scope or transition status at each camp today. The January 2025 report should therefore be read as follow-up context, not confirmation of current site-by-site arrangements.
Earlier contract context
The change followed a longer history of camp-service contracts involving Sodexo and Aboriginal-owned joint venture partners. In 2019, Australian Mining reported a three-year group of Fortescue village-services contracts worth $165 million, involving Sodexo’s joint ventures with Palyku Enterprises, Karlka Facilities Management and Kariyarra Hospitality Services. The report named Hamilton, Cloudbreak and Christmas Creek, and described services including catering, accommodation management, lifestyle and recreation.

Those 2019 figures are historical, not the value or scope of the contracts Fortescue declined to renew in 2024. At the time, Australian Mining reported that the services covered approximately 3,000 workers in a typical week and 8,500 meals daily across the camps discussed. Australian Mining’s 17 December 2019 report provides that earlier contract context; it does not offer a performance comparison between Sodexo and Civeo.

For that reason, the coverage supports a specific account of a non-renewal and reported worker dissatisfaction—not a provider ranking or a definitive finding about the quality of every meal.
