The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Former GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke launched developer-platform startup Entire on February 10, 2026, with a $60 million seed round at a reported $300 million valuation. Felicis, the lead investor, described it as the largest seed investment in developer tools, although that “record” is an investor claim rather than an independently audited industry ranking.
Entire is not launching another general-purpose coding assistant. Its first product, the open-source Checkpoints CLI, records prompts, transcripts, files touched, token usage and tool activity from supported AI coding sessions, then links that context to Git commits.

What Entire is building
Entire’s thesis is that Git preserves the resulting code but usually not the circumstances that produced an AI-generated change. When agents edit several files, invoke tools and run tests, a later reviewer may see only a diff. Entire wants the associated intent and session history to remain available for review, recovery and handoff.
The company describes a broader platform with three elements: a Git-compatible database for code plus intent and constraints; a semantic layer for persistent context and coordination among agents; and an AI-native interface for human-agent collaboration. Those are platform ambitions, not all features that were publicly downloadable at launch.

The first product: Checkpoints
Checkpoints is an open-source, Git-aware command-line tool. Entire’s launch documentation gives this basic setup:
- Install the CLI with
curl -fsSL https://entire.io/install.sh | bash. - Open a Git repository and run
entire enable. - Complete the project configuration prompts.
- Use a supported coding agent to create a commit.
- Check the associated session metadata on the separate
entire/checkpoints/v1branch when the commit is pushed.
The repository’s source code is not changed by the metadata operation. The intended result is a checkpoint that can be inspected alongside normal Git history, showing the recorded session context behind an agent-generated change. Entire announced Claude Code and Google’s Gemini CLI as initial integrations. Compatibility is version-sensitive: by July 2026, GeekWire reported integrations with Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Factory AI and GitHub Copilot.
Checkpoints records session context—not a model’s private, complete chain of thought. Teams should treat prompts, transcripts and tool logs as potentially sensitive operational data.

Why agent context matters in code review
The review gap
An agent may receive a specification, inspect a codebase, edit multiple files, call shell tools and run tests before committing. A conventional pull request can show what changed without explaining which requirements shaped the implementation, which alternatives were rejected or what tools were used.
Entire’s product thesis is that rising volumes of agent-written code will make provenance and coordination as important as code generation. That is a claim about where development workflows may be heading, not proof that every team needs persistent transcripts.
Rank #3
Potential uses
- Auditing the origin and constraints of AI-generated changes.
- Handing an unfinished agent task to another developer or agent.
- Comparing parallel agent attempts.
- Searching code history together with the context behind changes.
Is Entire a GitHub, Copilot, Cursor or Claude Code competitor?
| Category | Examples | Entire’s relationship |
|---|---|---|
| Coding agents | Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI | Integrates with or records their work rather than replacing them at launch |
| Code hosting | GitHub, GitLab | Initially complementary; native hosting could create more direct competition later |
| Agent provenance | Entire Checkpoints | Entire’s initial product wedge |
| Agent coordination | Entire’s planned platform | Longer-term strategic ambition |
In July 2026, Entire previewed a distributed Git network that mirrored repositories in the United States, Europe and Australia while allowing GitHub to remain the source of truth. That makes the current product more of a companion infrastructure layer than a GitHub replacement. Hosting repositories natively in the future could change the competitive position.

Felicis and Entire called the financing the largest seed investment in developer-tools history. That wording should be read as an attributed claim, not a definitive ranking of every developer-tool financing worldwide.
Why investors may see a large opportunity
A $60 million seed round is unusually large because investors are underwriting a potential control plane for agent-generated software before the complete commercial platform has been demonstrated publicly. Dohmke brings four years as GitHub CEO, including the period when GitHub Copilot expanded rapidly, giving him experience with developer distribution, enterprise workflows and the limits of conventional code-hosting products.
Rank #4
Dohmke left GitHub in August 2025 to return to startup building. His earlier startup experience includes HockeyApp, which Microsoft acquired. His background supports founder-market credibility; it does not establish product-market fit or guaranteed adoption.

Privacy and retention
Prompts and transcripts can contain proprietary code, customer information, credentials or internal design details. Before enabling capture, teams should define redaction, retention and deletion rules, restrict access to checkpoint data and confirm where metadata is stored.

Git and repository complexity
A useful provenance system must remain reliable through rebases, squashes, force-pushes, merges, forks, mirrors and parallel sessions. Teams should verify how Checkpoints handles commits that are later rewritten, code created without a commit, missing metadata and conflicts between simultaneous agents.
Integration differences
“Supported” agents may expose different events and may not provide equal coverage of prompts, tool calls or file changes. Changes made outside a supported workflow may not be recorded. Compatibility should therefore be tested against the specific agent versions and development practices a team uses.
Operational and commercial maturity
In July 2026 coverage, Entire had not disclosed pricing for the broader platform and said commercial and individual tiers were planned after the preview period. The open-source CLI should not be treated as proof that hosted features, enterprise controls or support guarantees are free or already available.
Practical takeaway
Entire’s immediate value proposition is narrow and clear: preserve AI-agent session context alongside Git commits so reviewers can understand more than the final diff. That makes Checkpoints worth considering for teams already using agents and needing provenance.
The $300 million valuation reflects expectations for a much larger platform: agent-aware storage, coordination, search, review and possibly hosting. It is a substantial venture bet on that future—not evidence that Entire has already replaced GitHub, Copilot or established coding agents.
