Former Federal Trade Commission commissioner Alvaro Bedoya warned that concentrated billionaire wealth could influence law enforcement and said the risk affects people across political lines. His remarks followed President Donald Trump’s dismissal of Bedoya and fellow Democratic commissioner Rebecca Kelly Slaughter, which was described at the time as an apparent violation of law and longstanding precedent; that description was contested, not a final legal ruling.

What Bedoya said

Speaking to the Colorado state legislature, Bedoya asked lawmakers to look beyond the dismissals themselves and consider who might benefit from them. As reported on March 19, 2025, he said: “Above all else, we need to be asking ourselves, who will win from this attempt to illegally remove us, and frankly, who will lose?”

He also urged attention to wealthy figures around the president, saying, “We need to be focused on the billionaires over President Trump’s shoulder at his inauguration.” He characterized the broader concern this way: “This issue of the corrupting influence of billionaires in law enforcement is an issue that affects all of us.” These are Bedoya’s reported views, not findings that any particular billionaire improperly influenced an enforcement decision. Why he connected the warning to FTC work

Bedoya referred to FTC matters involving Amazon, Meta, and X. He also recalled criticizing Amazon founder Jeff Bezos over warehouse labor conditions. The report attributes those references and criticisms to Bedoya; it does not independently establish the underlying claims or explain the current status of the matters.

Emotional Survival for Law Enforcement: A Guide for Officers and Their Families Revised Edition 2021
  • In emergency situations, there is probably no more important challenge for a law enforcement professional than to be able to balance officer safety with respect and appreciation of a citizen’s liberty.
  • Every day, when an officer or first responder reports on-duty, they begin dealing with the issues and events outside the normal range of everyday life for the average citizen which impact their mental and physical health.
  • Building psychological resiliency is just as important as building physical strength and resiliency. Not only for the Cops and First Responders involved, but also for their families.
  • A confident, practical mind coupled with physical preparedness are keys to keeping a good cop, a good cop and good people as good people.

His argument was that enforcement can affect powerful companies and their owners, so changes to the agency’s leadership raise questions about who gains or loses when its independence is challenged. The remarks raise that concern as a matter of public accountability; they do not by themselves establish that a company or billionaire caused the commissioners’ dismissals.

What is established about the dismissals—and what is not

The March 2025 report said Trump dismissed Bedoya and Slaughter and presented the removals as apparently contrary to law and longstanding precedent. That was a contemporaneous legal characterization, not a determination of the current legal position. The information available here does not establish whether later court decisions or other developments changed the dispute’s status.

Bedoya’s warning is therefore best understood as a political and institutional argument: he urged scrutiny of how concentrated private wealth might affect law enforcement, while the legality and subsequent status of the removals must be treated separately from his remarks.
