Apple’s former vice president of Human Interface Design now serves as Meta’s chief design officer and leads a new creative studio within Reality Labs, focused on hardware, software, fashion, and AI-powered consumer devices. Apple appointed longtime designer Stephen Lemay as his successor.
What happened to Alan Dye?
Dye left Apple after roughly a decade leading its user-interface design organization and moved to Meta at the end of 2025. The original announcement was reported on December 3, 2025, but the present-tense headline that Apple’s UI chief “is leaving” is now outdated.

Meta recruited Dye as its chief design officer and placed him in charge of a new creative studio inside Reality Labs. His reported remit spans hardware, software, and the integration of AI into Meta’s consumer-device experiences.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg described the studio as bringing together design, fashion, and technology, with intelligence treated as a new design material. That points to a role broader than conventional interface design: Meta wants a coherent experience across devices, the software running on them, and the AI features that connect them.

Who is Alan Dye?
Dye joined Apple in 2006 as a creative director in marketing and communications. In 2012, he moved into Jony Ive’s user-interface design group and contributed to the work surrounding the iOS 7 redesign.
He became head of Apple’s user-interface design team in 2015, after Ive moved into the chief design officer role. Dye’s formal Apple title was vice president of Human Interface Design. Calling him Apple’s “UI chief” is a useful shorthand, but he was not the head of all Apple design: software-interface design and industrial design were separate functions.
During his Apple tenure, his organization worked across major platforms including iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, and visionOS. Coverage also associated the group with the interface experience for Apple Vision Pro and the Liquid Glass interface redesign introduced with Apple’s 2025 operating-system releases, including iOS 26 and macOS 26.
That association should not be confused with sole authorship. Apple’s interfaces are created by large teams, and available reporting does not establish that Dye personally designed every feature or visual element.

What will Dye do at Meta?
Meta’s new creative studio is intended to coordinate several parts of the Reality Labs product experience:
- Hardware design: the physical form and usability of devices such as smart glasses and mixed-reality headsets.
- Software and interfaces: the controls, visual language, and interaction models users encounter.
- AI integration: ways for artificial intelligence to become a practical part of everyday device use.
- Brand and product coherence: a consistent relationship among Meta’s devices, software, fashion partnerships, and consumer-facing identity.
The role does not mean Dye is personally redesigning every Meta product. Meta’s existing design leaders and teams remain part of the organization, and reports indicated that some existing design leaders would report to him.
Why Meta wanted Apple design experience
The strategic value of the hire is less about copying a particular Apple screen and more about experience with a large, integrated product ecosystem.
Apple’s Human Interface Design organization has spent years translating a common interaction and visual language across multiple operating systems and device categories. That is especially relevant to Meta as it tries to make AI glasses and mixed-reality products feel like mainstream consumer technology rather than specialist hardware.

Dye also brings experience with spatial-computing interfaces through Apple Vision Pro. Meta’s challenge is not simply to build capable hardware; it must make cameras, displays, voice controls, contextual AI, notifications, and social features understandable and comfortable in daily life.
His appointment therefore signals that Meta views design as central to the next phase of Reality Labs. It does not prove that Meta’s future products will look or work like Apple products, or that Dye’s involvement will guarantee commercial success.
Who replaced Dye at Apple?
Apple selected Stephen Lemay, a longtime member of its design organization. Lemay joined Apple around 1999, and CEO Tim Cook said he had played a key role in every major Apple interface since then. 9to5Mac reported that Lemay would succeed Dye.
The appointment suggests continuity rather than an external reset. Lemay inherited responsibility soon after Apple introduced its Liquid Glass design direction, meaning Apple’s interface team must continue evolving and maintaining a major platform-wide design language while adapting to Dye’s departure.

Public reporting does not establish Lemay’s complete formal title, reporting structure, or detailed product roadmap. The confirmed point is his succession to Dye’s interface-design leadership role.
Did other Apple designers join Meta?
Yes. Reports also said that Billy Sorrentino, a senior Apple design executive and former WIRED creative director, joined Meta’s Reality Labs. That is a significant additional hire, but the available reporting does not establish that Apple’s design team was undergoing a mass defection.
The broader organizational picture appears to be Meta elevating and consolidating design leadership around Reality Labs, rather than simply filling one vacancy. Whether more Apple designers follow Dye remains unknown.
Is this a serious blow to Apple?
The departure matters, but its ultimate effect cannot be measured from the personnel change alone.
Why it matters to Apple
- Dye led the Human Interface Design group for approximately a decade.
- He left during a period of broader leadership changes at Apple.
- The transition occurred as Apple rolled out a substantial new interface direction.
- Meta gained an executive familiar with platform-wide design systems and spatial-computing interfaces.
Why Apple may absorb the change
- Apple retains an established design organization rather than relying on one individual.
- Lemay has decades of institutional experience at the company.
- Large interface decisions are produced collectively by design, engineering, and product teams.
- The major Liquid Glass work was already underway or released when Dye departed.
The defensible conclusion is that the move is symbolically important and strategically valuable to Meta, but it is not proof that Apple’s design organization is in crisis or that Apple’s products will deteriorate.
What the move does—and does not—tell us
It does show that Meta is willing to invest at a senior level in the design of AI glasses, mixed-reality devices, and their supporting software. It also shows that Meta sees consumer hardware as a combined design, fashion, interface, and AI problem.
It does not show that Dye left because of criticism of Liquid Glass, that Apple’s design team is broadly collapsing, or that Meta intends to copy Apple. Available reporting does not establish why Dye left Apple, and neither company has provided evidence that connects the move to Liquid Glass.
It is also inaccurate to call Dye the designer of Liquid Glass or Apple Vision Pro hardware. His reported responsibility was interface design; physical industrial design is a distinct discipline, and major software projects are team efforts.
Bottom line for readers following the tech sector
Alan Dye’s move is best understood as a completed December 2025 executive transfer with implications for the competition over AI-powered consumer hardware. Meta hired an experienced Apple interface leader to organize design across Reality Labs, while Apple promoted an internal veteran, Stephen Lemay, to preserve continuity.
The appointment could help Meta make smart glasses and mixed-reality products more coherent and approachable. But the hire alone cannot establish how Meta’s products will perform, whether Apple’s design direction will change, or which company will ultimately win the broader hardware and AI competition.
