Flexport founder Ryan Petersen returned to the CEO role. Clark said Petersen wanted to refocus on growing Flexport’s core freight business and was best suited to lead it; Flexport confirmed the change but, according to Reuters, declined to elaborate.
What happened
Clark joined Flexport as co-CEO in September 2022 and announced his resignation on September 6, 2023. The company confirmed the leadership change, and Petersen returned as CEO. Reuters reported that Clark was preparing to launch a Flexport product for small businesses the following day; the report did not describe it as a physical consumer product.
Clark’s departure followed a staged leadership transition. In June 2022, Flexport announced that Clark would join as CEO on September 1 and share the role with Petersen for six months. Petersen was then expected to become executive chairman. Reuters reported that Clark became sole CEO in March 2023, with Petersen moving to executive chairman.
What Clark said about his resignation
Clark publicly framed the change around Petersen’s priorities. He said Petersen wanted to return to a focus on growth in Flexport’s core freight business and, as Clark put it, “I feel that he is best suited to lead the company in that direction.” Clark also said, “Founders have the right to change their mind.”

Flexport’s statement, emailed to GeekWire, thanked Clark for his leadership over the preceding year. Reuters reported that Flexport declined to elaborate. These public statements establish the explanation given at the time, but they do not reveal private board discussions or settle every factor behind the decision.
Why the timing drew attention
The departure came after Flexport had expanded beyond its core freight-forwarding business. In June 2023, the company completed its purchase of Shopify Logistics. Reuters reported that the acquisition added e-commerce fulfillment, business-to-business distribution and last-mile delivery to Flexport’s portfolio.

That expansion is relevant context, not an established explanation for Clark’s exit. The contemporaneous accounts cited here do not connect the Shopify Logistics purchase to the leadership change. Flexport’s 2022 appointment announcement said Clark had spent 23 years at Amazon, which he joined in 1999. Reuters described Flexport as having raised $2.3 billion as of September 2023; that is a dated figure, not a current funding total.
