The spread-adjusted score—not simply whether the game itself ends in a tie—determines the result. A half-point line cannot push on an exact score margin. Always check the rules for your specific market, operator and game period.
How a spread bet can tie
To settle a spread bet, apply the line to the score of the team you backed. If the adjusted scores are equal, the spread bet is tied. In a standard two-way market using a whole-number spread, that result commonly counts as a push, with the original stake returned.
For example, if you bet a favorite at -10, subtract 10 from its final score for spread purposes. If it wins by exactly 10, the adjusted scores are equal. If you bet the underdog at +10 and it loses by exactly 10, adding 10 to its score also makes the adjusted scores equal.
NFL Support describes this outcome as a push with the initial wager returned when a favorite wins by exactly 10 on a -10 spread or an underdog loses by exactly 10 on a +10 spread. NFL Support’s explanation was published March 21, 2025.

What happens with a half-point spread?
A half-point line, such as -10.5 or +10.5, cannot land exactly on the final score margin: football scores and margins are whole numbers. The bet therefore settles for one side of the spread rather than pushing on an exact landing. NFL Support gives the example that a team cannot win by half a point. A game tie is different from a spread push
A game ending in a tie and a spread bet pushing are not the same event. A spread bet is evaluated after applying its line to the score, while a game tie is the teams’ outright result. A game can end tied without that automatically settling every spread market as a push; the particular market’s rules govern. Do not assume that a point-spread rule also determines how a moneyline bet settles.

Two-way and three-way spread markets
In a two-way spread market, the selections are typically the two teams with the spread applied; a whole-number line that produces equal adjusted scores commonly results in a push. A three-way spread market can instead offer the tie as a separate selection. In that format, the tie is a possible outcome to bet on, not necessarily a refund event.
These formats are described in the published rules of Fanatics Sportsbook for New Jersey. The operator’s examples are specific to its rules and jurisdiction; they do not establish a universal rule for every sportsbook.

Check the rules for your exact wager
Settlement can depend on the operator, jurisdiction, market format and period named on the bet. A regulation-only market, a full-game market, or another period may not use identical terms, and the reviewed rules do not establish one overtime rule for every football spread wager.

- Identify the market. Check whether your ticket is a two-way or three-way spread, and note whether the line is a whole number or includes a half point.
- Check the period. Confirm whether the wager covers regulation, a specified half or quarter, or the full game.
- Read the operator’s house rules. Look for its language on pushes, voided bets, ties and overtime. For examples, see the Fanatics New Jersey house rules and FanDuel’s New Jersey sportsbook house rules.
- Apply the stated rule to your ticket. If the rules say a whole-number two-way spread landing on the number is a push or void, the stake is refunded; a separately offered tie selection is settled under that market’s terms.
