Podiatrists Emily Splichal and Miguel Cunha have described using products ranging from foot sprays and lotions to nail clippers and an electronic foot file. Those reports, published by Shape on February 7, 2022, describe individual routines—not proof that a product treats a medical condition or is right for everyone. If you have diabetes, reduced sensation, circulation problems, or trouble seeing or reaching your feet, start with guidance from your own clinician rather than copying a grooming routine.
What foot-care products do podiatrists say they use?
Shape’s roundup names products used by podiatrists Emily Splichal and Miguel Cunha. The uses below are their reported personal practices; the roundup is editorial reporting, not a clinical comparison of products.
| Product | Reported use |
|---|---|
| Earth Therapeutics Tea Tree Oil Foot Spray | Splichal uses it to deodorize and manage sweat and oil. Shape describes mint ingredients as cooling; that is not evidence the spray treats an infection. |
| Arm & Hammer Invisible Spray Foot Powder | Splichal says she uses the spray in her shoes before workouts. She told Shape, “I like to use Arm & Hammer’s foot powder spray before working out.” |
| CeraVe SA Lotion for Rough & Bumpy Skin | Splichal applies it at night after showering. Shape says she sometimes covers it with plastic wrap and socks; this is her reported routine, not a general application instruction. |
| Lord Jones High CBD Formula Body Lotion | Splichal reports using it for foot pain or fatigue. Her experience does not establish that the lotion relieves pain. |
| Tweezerman Stainless Steel Nail Clipper Set | Cunha uses this set and favors straight-edge clippers for trimming toenails straight across. |
| Bare 40% Urea Cream | Cunha reports using it for rough or thickened skin with an occlusive wrap-and-sock routine. A high-concentration cream is not necessarily appropriate for every person or skin concern. |
| Amope Pedi Perfect Electronic Foot File | Cunha reports using the file in the morning after his skin has softened. This is not a general recommendation to file calluses. |
| Apple cider vinegar and Epsom salt soak | Cunha reports soaking his feet in this mixture. People with diabetes should not copy this practice: NIDDK advises against foot soaking because it can dry the skin. |
| Dr. Brenner’s Rx Exfoliating Foot Scrub | Shape identifies this as a product from podiatrist Hillary Brenner’s own line and reports her concern about pumice stored in moist environments. Current availability is not established here. |
Product names and formulas can change. The Shape roundup dates to 2022, so check current packaging and availability before buying; its descriptions should not be treated as confirmation of today’s formulation.
Which toenail clippers should you choose?
For people who can safely trim their own nails, a straight-edge clipper makes it easier to cut across the nail rather than angle into its corners. NIDDK gives people with diabetes who can manage their own nail care similar guidance: trim straight across, then smooth the corners with a file. Shape attributes straight-across trimming advice to Cunha and names the Tweezerman Stainless Steel Nail Clipper Set.

A separate clipper roundup, reproduced by the EU-Vietnam Business Network and attributed to The Strategist, discusses straight versus curved edges, clipper size, material, grip, and reach. It reports that Splichal recommended a long-handled swivel clipper for people with limited mobility. She also cautioned that professional podiatry nippers are designed for use on someone else and can cause cuts if used carelessly at home. Choose a tool designed for personal grooming that you can hold and control comfortably; if you cannot safely reach or see your nails, ask a clinician about professional care instead.
What should you use for dry feet, rough skin, sweat, or odor?
Match a product to the concern rather than assuming one foot-care product does everything. A spray or powder may be intended for sweat or odor; a lotion may be intended to moisturize or exfoliate rough skin. Check the label for its intended use and active ingredients, and follow its application directions. A stronger exfoliant or higher concentration is not automatically a better choice.

Splichal’s reported use of CeraVe SA Lotion and Cunha’s reported use of 40% urea cream are examples of their routines, not universal instructions for treating thickened skin. Likewise, Shape’s account of Splichal’s CBD lotion use does not show that it treats foot pain. Persistent pain, skin changes, or a suspected infection call for medical advice rather than relying on a product roundup.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What foot-care guidance matters if you have diabetes?
NIDDK’s “Take Care of Your Feet for a Lifetime” is guidance specifically for people with diabetes, not a test of the products above. It recommends daily foot checks, washing with warm—not hot—water, drying carefully between the toes, and wearing well-fitting protective shoes and socks.
