Food Brands With Two Names: Aunt Jemima Is Now Pearl Milling Company

Aunt Jemima pancake mix and syrup became Pearl Milling Company in 2021. Here’s how that consumer rebrand differs from food companies changing their corporate names.

If you’re looking for Aunt Jemima pancake mix or syrup, the current name is Pearl Milling Company. PepsiCo announced the change on February 9, 2021, and said the renamed products would begin arriving in stores that June. That consumer-brand change is different from a food company changing its corporate name—a distinction that matters when you’re trying to identify the product on a shelf.

What is Aunt Jemima called now?

The pancake-mix and syrup varieties sold under the Aunt Jemima name are now marketed as Pearl Milling Company. PepsiCo’s February 9, 2021 announcement said Pearl Milling products would start arriving in stores in June 2021. The announcement described the new packaging as retaining its familiar red color and said the former name would remain on products without the character image until June.

PepsiCo and The Quaker Oats Company said in their brand FAQ that they committed in June 2020 to changing the name and image because they did not reflect the companies’ core values. The FAQ characterizes the name as changed while the product inside the familiar red box remained the same. That is the company’s description; it does not establish that every recipe, package size, or product detail has always been identical.

If you’re shopping, look for Pearl Milling Company pancake mix or syrup rather than expecting to find the current products under the Aunt Jemima name.

How to tell a product rebrand from a company name change

“Two names” can describe different situations. A product brand can be renamed while the food continues under a new label. A company can also change its corporate name while consumer products keep their own established names. Those are not interchangeable claims: a corporate-name change alone does not show that two grocery products are the same.

Example What changed What the official source establishes
Aunt Jemima to Pearl Milling Company Consumer-facing name for pancake-mix and syrup varieties PepsiCo announced the successor name in 2021 and said the products would begin appearing under it in June 2021.
Geo. A. Hormel & Co. to Hormel Foods Corporation Corporate name Hormel’s official history records the renaming in 1993.
Campbell Soup Company to The Campbell’s Company Corporate name The company announced the change in November 2024. Its announcement said the Campbell’s soup labels people know would remain on shelves.
ConAgra Foods to Conagra Brands Corporate name Conagra’s milestones page records the change; it does not establish that two products are equivalent.

Other naming histories—and what they do not prove

Nabisco: a product-family name and a later corporate name

Mondelēz’s official history says National Biscuit Company adopted Nabisco as the family name for its products in 1941, then formally changed its corporate name to Nabisco, Inc. in 1971. This history connects product-family and company naming, but it is not evidence that two current consumer brands are interchangeable.

Campbell’s: the corporate name changed, not the soup label

When The Campbell’s Company announced its corporate name change in November 2024, CEO Mark Clouse said, “We love soup and always will. The iconic red and white Campbell’s soup labels that people love will always be on shelves.” The statement addressed the company’s new name; Campbell’s said its familiar soup labels would remain.

What the examples establish

  • Aunt Jemima and Pearl Milling Company: an officially announced new consumer-facing name for the pancake-mix and syrup varieties previously sold under Aunt Jemima.
  • Hormel, Campbell’s, Conagra, and Nabisco: documented corporate or naming histories, not proof that two separately named grocery products share a recipe or are interchangeable.

These examples are not a comprehensive list of food brands with two names, and they do not establish regional naming equivalences for other products. For any other brand, look for a company announcement or FAQ that explicitly connects the old and new names before assuming the products are the same.
