FlightAware disclosed in August 2024 that a configuration error may have exposed information in some customer accounts, including Social Security numbers for some recipients of its California notice. The company has not publicly confirmed that the data was downloaded, misused, or stolen. Affected users should reset their FlightAware password, change any reused password, and consider a credit freeze if their notice says an SSN may have been involved.
What happened at FlightAware?
FlightAware said it discovered a configuration error on July 25, 2024. The company said it corrected the error and required potentially affected users to reset their passwords. Its customer notification described information as potentially exposed rather than confirming that an unauthorized party accessed or removed it. FlightAware’s notice also said notification was not delayed because of a law-enforcement investigation.

A sample notice filed with the California attorney general lists January 1, 2021, as the reported breach date. That does not establish that the information was continuously exposed from 2021 through 2024. The available notices do not explain whether that date is the precise beginning of exposure or an administrative date used in the filing.

Not based on the public notices. FlightAware characterized the incident as an inadvertent exposure caused by a configuration error. The disclosures do not establish a malicious intrusion, confirmed data exfiltration, or confirmed misuse.

These terms describe different events:
- Exposure: Information may have been placed where unauthorized access was possible.
- Access: Someone actually viewed or retrieved the information.
- Exfiltration: Someone copied or removed it.
- Misuse: The information was used for fraud or identity theft.
The public disclosures establish a potential exposure, but they do not establish all of the later events. Calling the incident “nothing” would also be inaccurate: FlightAware acknowledged that personal information may have been accessible and required password resets.
What information may have been exposed?
FlightAware’s general notice lists these categories, although the information involved would have varied by account and by what each user supplied:
- User ID and password
- Email address and telephone number
- Full name
- Billing and shipping addresses
- IP address
- Year of birth
- Social-media account information
- The last four digits of a credit-card number
- Aircraft-ownership information
- Industry, job title, and pilot status
- Account activity, including flights viewed and comments posted
The California-specific notice adds that a Social Security number may have been exposed for some recipients. That does not mean every affected user had an SSN in the exposed information, and it does not mean all FlightAware customers were affected.

How many people were affected?
No confirmed affected-customer total was identified in the available public notices and reporting. FlightAware’s overall user base cannot be used as an estimate. The number of registered accounts, potentially exposed accounts, and people whose SSNs may have been involved are separate figures.
How to check whether the warning is legitimate
FlightAware’s notice is genuine: it originated from FlightAware, and a corresponding sample was filed with the California attorney general. However, scammers may imitate breach notices and use them to collect passwords, SSNs, payment details, or authentication codes.
- Do not click a password-reset link in an unexpected email.
- Open your browser and manually visit FlightAware’s official website.
- Use the account prompt or the official FlightAware password-reset page.
- Do not provide your SSN or one-time authentication code to anyone contacting you unexpectedly.
What affected users should do now
1. Reset your FlightAware password
Use the official FlightAware site rather than an embedded email link. A forced or requested password reset is a protective response; it does not prove that an attacker cracked or used your password.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2. Change reused passwords
If you used the same password on email, banking, shopping, aviation, work, or social-media accounts, change it everywhere. Use a unique, randomly generated password for each service. A password manager can generate and store the new credentials.

3. Turn on multifactor authentication
Enable multifactor authentication wherever the service offers it, especially for email and financial accounts. Protecting your email account is particularly important because it can be used to reset other passwords.
4. Review your FlightAware account
Look for unexpected profile changes, comments, or other account activity. Business users, pilots, and aircraft owners should notify their organization’s IT or security team if the account contained operational or business information.
5. Treat follow-up messages cautiously
A legitimate breach notice can trigger a second wave of phishing. Be suspicious of messages asking for an SSN, payment information, a password, or a verification code. Navigate manually to the relevant company’s website instead of using links in the message.

- Review your free credit reports at AnnualCreditReport.com.
- Consider placing a credit freeze with Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion.
- Alternatively, place a fraud alert if a freeze is impractical.
- Watch for unfamiliar accounts, hard inquiries, collection notices, tax correspondence, or employment-related notices.
- Report suspected identity theft through IdentityTheft.gov.
The Federal Trade Commission recommends checking credit reports and considering a credit freeze or fraud alert when an SSN may be exposed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Credit monitoring versus a credit freeze
Credit monitoring can alert you to some new-account activity, but it does not prevent every type of identity theft. A credit freeze is generally the stronger preventive step against many new-credit applications because it restricts access to your credit file. You must temporarily lift the freeze when a legitimate lender, landlord, utility provider, or mobile carrier needs to check your credit.
FlightAware’s California notice says eligible recipients were offered two years of no-cost credit monitoring through Equifax. Use the enrollment instructions in your individual notice and verify that the page is an official Equifax destination. Do not assume that the offer applies to every FlightAware user, and do not buy a paid monitoring plan before checking whether you qualify for the free offer.
Monitoring and a freeze serve different purposes: monitoring helps detect certain activity, while a freeze can make new-credit fraud more difficult. Neither one catches every form of tax, employment, benefits, medical, or account-takeover fraud.

Why does FlightAware’s privacy notice mention no SSN collection?
FlightAware’s current privacy notice says U.S. residents are not asked to provide Social Security numbers through www.flightaware.com. That appears inconsistent with the 2024 California breach notice, which says an SSN may have been exposed for some recipients.
The public documents do not explain the discrepancy. Possible explanations could include legacy data, another product or workflow, information supplied outside ordinary website registration, or a change in data practices, but none is established by the notices. The careful conclusion is that the current privacy statement does not resolve what information may have existed in the affected data.
What remains unknown?
- The confirmed number of affected people.
- Whether an unauthorized person actually accessed or copied the information.
- Whether any exposed data was sold or misused.
- Whether January 1, 2021, was the precise start of exposure.
- Why the California notice references possible SSN exposure while the current website privacy notice says FlightAware does not collect SSNs through the site.
Users should therefore respond proportionately: secure reused credentials immediately, use the offered monitoring if eligible, and consider a three-bureau credit freeze when an SSN may have been involved. Those precautions do not mean identity theft occurred; they reduce the consequences if the information is later misused.
