SecurityWeek’s account of Metabase Q’s findings described malware that used the CEN XFS middleware to command ATM functions, including cash dispensing. The reports do not establish how attackers first installed it, or whether FiXS is active today.
What is FiXS ATM malware?
FiXS is an ATM-focused malware family reported by SecurityWeek on March 6, 2023, based on findings from cybersecurity firm Metabase Q. The report described it as targeting banks in Mexico and as compatible with Windows-based ATMs that support CEN XFS, a middleware layer used to let software communicate with ATM hardware. SecurityWeek also noted Russian metadata in the malware; that detail alone does not establish who created or operated it.
Unlike a normal withdrawal authorized through a customer’s bank card and account, ATM jackpotting uses malware or other unauthorized access to make an ATM dispense cash. The 2023 FiXS reporting described commands to the cash dispenser through the ATM’s middleware.
How did FiXS reportedly make an ATM dispense cash?
The following technical details come from Metabase Q’s findings as relayed by SecurityWeek. They are reported observations, not an independent reproduction or test.

- Disguised delivery: FiXS was reportedly hidden inside a seemingly innocuous program. A dropper decoded and stored its payload in a temporary directory.
- Execution: The malware reportedly launched through the Windows ShellExecute API.
- ATM interaction: FiXS interacted with CEN XFS, allowing it to query some cash-unit information and issue commands to ATM hardware, including the dispenser.
- Cash-out timing: SecurityWeek reported that the malware looped for selected keyboard input, waited for cassettes to be loaded, and was configured to dispense cash 30 minutes after the last reboot.
The report said FiXS required an external keyboard, which suggests an attacker needed physical access at some stage. It did not establish the initial infection method. Auriga’s later explanation describes a possible sequence involving preparation, physical infection, persistence, and accomplices collecting cash, but that is a vendor’s scenario—not confirmation of how FiXS was installed in the reported incidents.
What is known—and not known—about the threat
The evidence supports a specific historical account: FiXS was reported in 2023 in connection with banks in Mexico, and the described malware could command cash dispensing on compatible Windows ATMs. The sources do not provide a FiXS-specific prevalence figure or financial-loss estimate.

Auriga’s June 2025 press release summarized its guide as saying FiXS remained the latest detected ATM-specific malware family until the purported AU ATM Malware was substantiated. The same vendor summary dates that claim to May 2024 and mentions a FastCash variant discovered in October 2024. This is a dated vendor assessment, not evidence of FiXS activity in 2026 or a complete picture of the current threat landscape.

Auriga recommends limiting access to ATM software, hardware, and communications, and tightly controlling authorized changes. These are useful control areas for operators to evaluate, rather than a guarantee that any one product prevents an attack.

- Control connected devices and communications: Limit permitted hardware and network communication paths to what operations require.
- Protect integrity: Monitor critical files and Windows registry settings for unauthorized changes; Auriga describes its Lookwise Device Manager as including integrity controls and hard-disk encryption.
- Manage maintenance tightly: Keep a documented, authorized process for service access, software updates, and hardware changes, including how changes are verified and logged.
- Plan detection and response: Establish who investigates alerts, how a potentially compromised machine is isolated, and how ATM service can be restored safely.
- Check operational fit and evidence: Assess compatibility with the ATM fleet and uptime requirements, and seek independently documented effectiveness. Auriga’s product description is vendor material, not independent comparative testing.
Metabase Q, as quoted by SecurityWeek, urged banks and financial institutions to assume devices could be compromised and focus on reducing detection and response time. The quote was attributed to the organization, not to a named individual.
