Choose a fixed-rate plan when predictable unit prices and protection from increases matter more than capturing possible price falls. Choose a conventional variable-rate plan when you can tolerate changing bills and want prices to move with the contract’s reference or market conditions. Neither type is automatically cheaper: the right choice depends on your location, consumption pattern, contract terms and ability to absorb a surprise bill.

Do not confuse a conventional variable plan with a dynamic or time-of-use plan. Dynamic prices can change hourly or every 15 minutes, so they only make sense when you can monitor prices and shift flexible usage. Before signing, compare the complete bill—not just the advertised energy rate—including standing or daily charges, taxes, network costs, discounts, one-off fees, renewal rules and exit charges.

The short answer: fixed for certainty, variable for flexibility

A fixed-price energy contract keeps the agreed energy unit rate stable for a defined term. That protects you from increases in that component while the term lasts, but you continue paying the agreed rate if market prices fall. The European Commission describes fixed-price contracts as stable and predictable over a set period; it specifically notes that “flat-price” contracts offer a stable and predictable rate for electricity over a set period. See the Commission’s March 17, 2026 explanation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A variable-price contract lets the supplier change the energy rate under a stated formula. The rate may be linked to wholesale prices or another reference and may reset monthly, quarterly or on another schedule. You receive more of the benefit when prices decline, but you also carry more of the risk when they rise.

Watt Meter Power Meter Plug Home Electricity Usage Monitor 7 Modes Display
  • Various Monitoring Parameters: The power meter plug can monitor the power (W), energy (kWh), volts, amps, hertz, power factor, cost, minimum and maximum power (W), cumulative days and time of your appliances. By switching 7 display modes, you can easily know the various parameters while the appliance is working. The home energy monitor can also calculate and display how much power your appliance uses and how much electricity bill it cost in cumulative time
  • Upgraded LCD Display: With large screen size 2.36 inch x 1.85 inch, clearer monitor backlit, our electrical usage monitor can display the data clearer and more visible no matter day or night. 180°full wide viewing angles is great for reading and recording the data in any angles. No need to stand on the front of the display and bend over to read the numbers
  • Adjustable Backlight Time: Our upgraded watt meter has 5 options of backlight time. The default backlight time duration is 10 minutes(bL-0). If you want to change the backlight time, you can press and hold "UP" and "DOWN" button at the same time to enter backlight time setting, then press "UP" and "DOWN" to select the backlight time (bL-0 =10 minutes, bL-1=1 hour, bL-2=4 hours, bL-3=8 hours, bL-4=always on), finally press the "COST" to save the backlight time settings
  • Overload protection: When the power of the appliance exceeds the overload power, the LCD will display “OVERLOAD” to warn the user. All the buttons will quit working and can only be workable when you lower or remove the load power. The default overload power is 3680W and is adjustable from 0 to 3680W. In general, you need to set the overload power to 1800W before using. Just press the "function" button for more than 3 seconds to enter the setting
  • Data Memory Function: The wattage meter will record your power consumption data when you remove it from socket, or remove appliances from the electricity monitor. You can directly see the last data when you use it next time. This function can also automatically save the data when there is a sudden power failure

That distinction concerns the tariff, not your total bill. A fixed unit rate does not freeze your consumption, taxes, regulated network charges or every fee. A variable rate does not necessarily change every day. Read the contract’s definition of “fixed,” “variable,” “indexed,” “dynamic” and “mixed” rather than relying on the label.

Which household tends to fit each option?

Household situation Usually more suitable Reason
You need a stable budget, have little cash buffer or expect prices to rise Fixed-rate The protected energy rate makes the variable part of the bill easier to forecast during the term.
You can handle month-to-month changes and want prices to fall if markets decline Conventional variable The contract passes more market movement to you, in both directions.
You can shift charging, heating or laundry and actively watch interval prices Dynamic or time-of-use, if the tariff is demonstrably competitive Flexible usage can move into cheaper periods, but frequent changes increase uncertainty.
Your home is vacant soon, you may move or you dislike exit fees Shorter or flexible contract after checking the tariff A long fixed term can be costly if cancellation rules are restrictive.

This is a decision framework, not a forecast. A current variable offer could be below a fixed offer, while a later market increase could reverse that position. Only a comparison using your jurisdiction, actual consumption and the full terms can identify the cheaper offer for you.

What “fixed” and “variable” mean on an actual bill

Fixed energy unit price

In a fixed-rate contract, the supplier promises not to change the agreed energy price per unit during the specified term, subject to the contract’s exceptions. “Fixed” may cover only that unit price. Ask separately whether the standing or daily charge, taxes, network components, renewable levies or other regulated items can change. Some contracts are mixed: one component is fixed while another follows a published index.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Variable energy unit price

A conventional variable contract sets out how the supplier may revise the unit rate. The document should identify the reference, the components included, the calculation method, notice period and maximum or minimum limits, if any. “Variable” without a formula is not enough information to estimate risk. A rate that changes quarterly is materially different from one that can change monthly.

Standing, daily or connection charges

Many bills contain a flat charge for keeping the connection available plus a usage charge for each unit consumed. The Australian government describes this structure as a daily connection charge plus a variable charge for each unit used in electricity and gas bills. Those bill components are separate from whether the supplier can alter its unit tariff. Read the Australian household guidance for that distinction.

  • Easy to reset: No reset tool needed, our appliance power usage meter is easy to reset. You can press the “M” button for 5 seconds directly to reset the device. After reset, all cumulative data (electricity quantity, cost) will be cleared, and all settings will be restored to factory settings

Total bill versus unit rate

Your total normally reflects a combination of:

  • energy used multiplied by the applicable unit rate;
  • daily or standing charges multiplied by the billing period;
  • taxes and government levies;
  • network or delivery charges;
  • discounts, credits and their eligibility conditions; and
  • one-off connection, administration or payment fees.

A low advertised rate can be outweighed by a high daily charge if your home uses little energy. A discount may apply only to the usage component, require direct debit or expire after an introductory period. Compare the estimated annual total at your own consumption, not the headline rate alone.

Fixed versus variable: the trade-offs that matter

Comparison point Fixed-rate plan Conventional variable plan
Exposure to price increases Lower for the covered component during the fixed term. Higher; the supplier can revise the rate under the formula.
Benefit if prices fall You may remain on the agreed rate until the term ends or you switch under the contract. The rate may fall when the reference or market falls, subject to the contract’s adjustment rules.
Budget predictability Generally stronger for the protected unit rate, although usage and other bill components still vary. Weaker because both consumption and the tariff can change.
Contract commitment Often tied to a defined term; check renewal and exit fees. May be more flexible, but cancellation and notice rules still vary.
Information you must verify What exactly is fixed and which charges remain changeable. Reference, formula, adjustment frequency, notice and any limits.
Best test Compare the full term cost with a realistic usage estimate. Stress-test the bill if the rate rises at the next permitted adjustment.

How to compare offers step by step

  1. Identify your jurisdiction and eligibility. Enter the exact country, state, province or service area, property type and meter configuration. Consumer protections and available plans are local.
  2. Collect reliable usage data. Use at least 12 months of bills when possible, including seasonal highs and lows. Record electricity and gas separately if they are on different contracts. If you have moved or changed appliances, explain that difference rather than blindly using an old annual figure.
  3. Separate bill components. Write down the unit rate, daily or standing charge, taxes, network charges, discounts, credits and one-off fees. Confirm whether the advertised estimate includes all of them.
  4. Classify the pricing model. Mark the offer as fixed, conventional variable, indexed, mixed, time-of-use or dynamic. Do not treat an indexed or dynamic offer as an ordinary variable plan without reading its timing and formula.
  5. Read the price-change clause. For a variable offer, find the reference, calculation, frequency, notice method and the parts that can change. For a fixed offer, identify exceptions that permit changes to non-energy components.
  6. Calculate an annual cost using your own consumption. Apply each rate to the relevant usage periods and add recurring charges and taxes. If the supplier gives only an estimate, check the assumptions behind it.
  7. Check the contract horizon. Note start date, duration, automatic renewal, notice window, cancellation process, exit fee and what rate applies after expiry.
  8. Apply local protections. Determine whether a price cap, regulated reference, cooling-off period, hardship policy or other protection applies to this specific tariff type. A protection for standard variable customers may exclude fixed contracts.
  9. Compare an adverse case. For a variable plan, calculate the bill if the rate rises at the next allowed adjustment. For a fixed plan, calculate the opportunity cost if market prices fall and you cannot leave without a fee.
  10. Save the documents. Keep the offer, fact sheet, contract, tariff schedule and confirmation of the agreed rate. These records help resolve billing disputes.

What the contract summary should contain

The European Commission’s consumer guidance says an energy contract summary should identify the supplier and contact details, start date, duration, renewal and termination rules, total price breakdown, whether the price is fixed, variable, dynamic, indexed or mixed, and billing and payment arrangements. For flexible contracts, it says the summary should show the pricing formula, how often prices may change and examples of possible bills under different consumption patterns. Use the Commission’s contract checklist as a document-by-document test.

Questions to ask before accepting a fixed offer

  • Is the unit energy price fixed for the entire term, or can the supplier change part of it?
  • Are the daily charge, taxes, network charges and levies outside the guarantee?
  • What happens automatically at the end of the term?
  • Is there an early-termination fee, and are there exceptions for moving home or serious hardship?
  • Does the discount require a particular payment method or expire after a set period?

Questions to ask before accepting a variable offer

  • Which published index, wholesale reference or supplier formula determines the rate?
  • How often can the rate change, and how much notice will you receive?
  • Can the supplier change the standing charge or only the unit rate?
  • Are there caps, floors or limits on adjustments?
  • What rate and terms apply if you do nothing at renewal?

Dynamic and time-of-use plans are a separate decision

A dynamic plan can change far more often than a conventional variable tariff—sometimes hourly or every 15 minutes. The European Commission says consumers considering such contracts should be able to monitor prices and shift consumption to lower-priced periods. France’s energy regulator similarly treats dynamic pricing as an offer for consumers able to move some demand and says suppliers should state how often prices change. See the regulator’s categories of offers and the Commission’s explanation at its electricity-contract article.

When dynamic pricing can fit

  • You have controllable loads such as electric-vehicle charging, water heating or laundry.
  • You can receive and understand interval price signals before using energy.
  • Your equipment can safely operate at the times you choose.
  • The tariff’s spread between high and low periods is large enough to justify the effort and risk.

When it can be a poor fit

  • Your largest loads occur at fixed times, such as medical equipment or essential heating.
  • You cannot monitor prices or change routines.
  • Your budget cannot absorb occasional high-price intervals.
  • The plan has complex fees that erase the apparent off-peak discount.

Dynamic pricing may lower costs for a flexible household, but frequent changes create bill uncertainty. It is not simply a cheaper version of a conventional variable plan, and the result depends on the tariff design and your actual ability to shift demand.

Using a smart meter or usage monitor responsibly

Interval data can reveal when your home consumes energy and help you test whether a time-of-use or dynamic plan is practical. A utility smart meter may provide whole-home readings at the intervals used by the tariff. A generic plug-in monitor may measure only one appliance or circuit, not the whole property. The European Commission discusses smart-meter monitoring in its dynamic-contract guidance.

  • electrical compatibility and safe installation requirements;
  • whether your utility supplies usable interval data;
  • data access, privacy and retention terms; and
  • the measurement interval and accuracy relevant to your tariff.

A monitor does not guarantee lower bills or identify the best plan by itself. It is useful only when the data scope matches the pricing decision you are making.

Local rules change the answer

Great Britain

Ofgem says its energy price cap protects customers on standard variable tariffs, while customers who agreed a fixed tariff are not protected by that cap. Ofgem sets the cap every three months, and the level and rates change over time. Check the current figure and the exact tariff classification at Ofgem’s price-cap and standing-charge page. Do not assume that choosing a fixed tariff gives you the cap’s protection, or that a capped standard variable tariff has a fixed bill.

European Union context

The European Commission encourages consumers to compare complete offers and use national independent comparison tools where available. In a March 17, 2026 article, it reported potential savings averaging over €150 per year in the EU under the market conditions described at that time. That is a Commission-reported average potential, not a guarantee for an individual household; your result depends on country, usage and available offers. The Commission’s comparison guidance is at this page.

Australia

The Australian government recommends Energy Made Easy, a free government comparison service for households and small businesses in New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania and the Australian Capital Territory. Availability and regulated arrangements differ elsewhere. Start with the government’s household energy guide, then confirm the plan’s daily connection charge, usage rates, discounts and contract conditions.

Singapore

Singapore’s Energy Market Authority distinguishes fixed-price plans from plans whose rates may change under the contract. It advises consumers to request a plan fact sheet and consumer advisory before signing. See the Energy Market Authority’s retailer guidance and rely on the definitions in the documents supplied for your specific offer.

France

France’s energy regulator categorizes offers tied to public references, market indices, dynamic pricing and other structures. Those categories illustrate why “variable” does not have one universal meaning. Read the current tariff description and the regulator’s explanations at CRE’s offer-category page.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Choosing from the headline rate

Problem: You compare only cents per kilowatt-hour or another unit rate. Fix: Recalculate the annual bill with standing charges, taxes, network costs, discounts and one-off fees included.

Assuming “fixed” means a frozen bill

Problem: You budget for an unchanged total even though usage or non-energy charges can vary. Fix: Confirm which components are fixed and retain the tariff schedule.

Calling every changing tariff “dynamic”

Problem: You expect a monthly variable plan to provide hourly signals or off-peak opportunities. Fix: Check the adjustment frequency and formula; dynamic plans state interval timing explicitly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring renewal

Problem: A promotional fixed term ends and the account rolls onto a different tariff. Fix: Record the expiry and notice dates and compare replacement offers before the renewal window.

Overestimating flexible usage

Problem: You select a dynamic plan but cannot move enough demand away from expensive periods. Fix: Review interval data first and calculate savings using loads you can actually control.

Assuming a protection applies everywhere

Problem: You import a cap or consumer right from another country. Fix: Check your own regulator’s rules and the plan’s legal classification.

A practical decision framework

  1. Start with risk tolerance. If a substantial rate increase would force you to cut essentials or miss payments, place a high value on predictability and examine fixed offers first.
  2. Check the premium for certainty. Compare the fixed offer’s complete annual estimate with the current variable offer. Treat the difference as the price of protection, not proof that one will win.
  3. Test your time horizon. If you may move, sell a property or change occupancy, examine exit fees and transfer rules before committing to a long term.
  4. Measure flexibility. Only consider time-of-use or dynamic pricing if you can shift meaningful consumption safely and consistently.
  5. Verify protections and documents. Use an official comparison service or regulator-backed tool where available, and do not accept an offer whose formula, charges or renewal outcome is unclear.

The best plan is the one whose risk you can manage after reading the complete contract. A fixed plan buys rate certainty for the covered component; a conventional variable plan preserves exposure to falling prices but passes through increases; a dynamic plan adds a requirement to respond to frequent price signals. Compare all three only on the same usage assumptions and with the same bill components included.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a fixed-rate plan still produce a different monthly bill?

Yes. Your consumption, billing period, taxes, network charges and any components outside the fixed unit rate can change even when the agreed energy rate does not.

Is a variable-rate plan always cheaper than a fixed-rate plan?

No. Variable pricing can benefit from falling rates but can cost more after increases. Compare current full offers and their terms instead of assuming either type is cheaper.

What should I do if a supplier cannot explain its variable-rate formula?

Do not rely on the label. Request the written reference, calculation method, adjustment frequency, notice process and charge components; choose an offer you can independently estimate.
