This error usually means UPI Lite is still registered on your old phone. On that device, disable or delete UPI Lite and let its balance return to the linked bank account; then activate it on the new phone. If you cannot use the old device, ask your UPI app or bank to deregister it and recover any balance.
Why this error appears
UPI Lite is an on-device stored-value facility for small payments, not your ordinary UPI ID or bank-account registration. Its registration can remain associated with a previous device after a phone change, app reinstall, or move between Android and iOS. The error does not by itself mean someone else accessed your account. App, bank, eligibility, or verification problems can also prevent activation, so treat an old-device registration as the likely cause rather than a certainty. NPCI describes UPI Lite as an on-device wallet.
Rules may differ by app. For example, Google Pay says it allows one UPI Lite account on Google Pay, while NPCI’s circular permits users to have Lite balances in different UPI apps. Having UPI Lite in another app does not, by itself, release an old registration in the app that shows this error.
Fix it when you still have the old phone
- Connect the old phone to the internet and open the same UPI app you used for UPI Lite.
- Check that the app is signed in with the mobile number and bank account associated with the Lite balance.
- Open the app’s UPI Lite section. Depending on the app, the control may be called Disable, Delete, Deregister, or Close UPI Lite.
- Follow the app’s confirmation steps, including the UPI PIN or other requested authentication.
- Wait for confirmation that UPI Lite has been closed. Check the linked bank account if the app does not show the returned balance immediately.
- Once the old registration is closed, open the app on the new phone and activate UPI Lite.
Do not uninstall the app, clear its data, remove the bank account, or factory-reset the old phone before closing UPI Lite. Those steps can remove your local access without deregistering the Lite account.

Google Pay
Google Pay’s documented deletion path is Profile picture → UPI Lite → three-dot menu → Delete UPI Lite → Delete. Google Pay says deregistering UPI Lite credits the money back to the linked bank account. Its help page also describes a Reactivate option after an accidental uninstall and reinstall. On a new iPhone or iPad, it says UPI Lite can be reactivated by setting the UPI PIN; if several bank accounts are linked, at least one must have a UPI PIN set. See Google Pay’s UPI Lite instructions.
PhonePe
Open PhonePe’s UPI Lite section and follow the disable or deactivate procedure shown in the app. PhonePe’s terms do not publish one fixed menu path. They say UPI Lite can be enabled for one linked bank account within PhonePe, requires the PhonePe application-lock facility, and returns the remaining balance automatically to the linked bank account when disabled. PhonePe specifically says to disable UPI Lite on the old device before moving between Android and iOS, or vice versa. Its terms say this is not required when moving to another device on the same operating system, but closing UPI Lite before wiping, selling, or giving away the old phone remains prudent. If you cannot access the old phone
If the phone is lost, stolen, sold, traded in, reset, or too damaged to use, contact the UPI app through its official support route or contact the bank that issued the linked account. Ask specifically for UPI Lite deregistration from the old device and return of any remaining balance to the linked bank account. A factory reset does not establish that the Lite registration was closed.
- Lost or stolen: Contact the bank and app promptly, and secure the mobile number, SIM, bank account, and UPI app. Google Pay directs users with a lost device to their bank and says that resolution for this issue can take up to 10 business days; that is Google Pay guidance, not a universal bank deadline. Google Pay lost-device guidance.
- Damaged or inaccessible: If the old phone can be repaired or powered on safely, use it only long enough to close UPI Lite. Otherwise, contact the app or bank for deregistration.
- Mobile number changed: Recovery may not work through the usual new-device flow. Google Pay says the same mobile number registered to UPI Lite is needed to claim the balance on a new device; if you no longer have that number, contact the bank. Google Pay balance-recovery guidance.
If you use Google Pay in India and need general guidance, its help page lists DigiSaathi at 14431 and 1800 891 3333. For account-specific deregistration or balance recovery, use the bank or app’s official support channel. Google Pay’s UPI Lite help page.

If the Lite balance has not returned
First check the linked bank account and the UPI app’s transaction or balance history. If the amount is still missing, contact the issuing bank or app support and give them the linked account details, the device change, and any closure confirmation or transaction reference they request. Use official in-app or bank channels; do not share your UPI PIN, OTP, debit-card PIN, or full banking credentials with anyone offering to unlock UPI Lite.
What not to do
- Do not rely on uninstalling alone. Removing an app does not necessarily deregister UPI Lite.
- Do not remove and re-add the bank account as a workaround. Google Pay says active UPI Lite must be unlinked before its associated bank account can be removed. Google Pay guidance on removing a linked bank account.
- Do not repeatedly retry activation or verification. Some onboarding flows limit verification attempts. Google Pay documents a limit of three bank-account verification SMS attempts within 24 hours for one related process; that limit is not stated as universal to every app or activation flow. Google Pay bank-verification guidance.
- Do not assume another bank account fixes the old registration. It may not recover or close the Lite balance tied to the original account.
- Do not call numbers from random videos or articles, install remote-access software at an unofficial agent’s request, or disclose authentication codes. Use the app’s built-in support or your bank’s official website. Google Pay safety guidance.
Activate UPI Lite on the new phone
- Install the official UPI app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
- Verify the mobile number registered with the bank account using the app’s SMS or device-verification process.
- Add or restore the same bank account and set or confirm its UPI PIN if asked.
- Open UPI Lite, select an eligible bank account, and complete the app’s activation steps.
- Add funds only after the app confirms activation, then test with a small payment.
If the same error remains after the old Lite account has been closed, stop retrying and contact the app or bank with the error message and any deregistration confirmation. Google Pay’s help pages contain differing transaction-limit descriptions, so check the limits shown in your app rather than treating one figure as universal.
