‘Five Nights at Freddy’s 2’ Box Office: Did It Need to Earn More?

The sequel earned less theatrically than the first Five Nights at Freddy’s, but its box-office gross and conflicting budget estimates do not reveal whether it made a profit.

Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 earned less at the worldwide box office than the first film, but the available figures do not show exactly how much more it needed to make to be profitable. Box Office Mojo lists the sequel at $238,569,800 worldwide as of October 5, 2026. That is a smaller theatrical total than Blumhouse’s “almost $300 million” description of the 2023 original, yet the sequel’s profitability cannot be settled by comparing gross with its reported production budget alone.

How much did Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 make?

Box Office Mojo’s listing, accessed October 5, 2026, gives the sequel a worldwide gross of $238,569,800: $127,730,290 in the domestic market and $110,839,510 internationally. These are listed box-office totals, not audited studio revenue, and dynamic box-office listings can be revised. Box Office Mojo’s title page provides the current breakdown.

A strong opening, followed by a steep decline

Box Office Mojo lists a domestic opening of $64,007,430. The Associated Press’s December 7, 2025 opening-weekend report gave an estimate of $63 million, so the figures represent the initial report and the later database listing rather than an identical number. AP described the launch as the biggest opening ever for the weekend after Thanksgiving and the largest opening of the year for a PG-13 film. AP’s opening-weekend report covers the estimate and record context.

The second weekend was less encouraging. AP reported a 70% domestic drop to $15.4 million, bringing the domestic cumulative total to $95.5 million at that point. That sharp fall indicates weaker follow-through after the debut, though it does not erase the launch’s size. AP’s December 14 box-office report gives the weekend figures.

How does the sequel compare with the first film?

Blumhouse says the 2023 original opened to $80 million and earned almost $300 million worldwide. Against that benchmark, the sequel had a smaller domestic opening and a lower listed worldwide theatrical gross. Blumhouse’s franchise release announcement gives its description of the first film’s performance.

The comparison is not a complete measure of financial performance. AP noted that the original was available on Peacock at the same time as its theatrical release, while the sequel opened exclusively in theaters. The release approaches differ, so their theatrical grosses do not capture the same distribution circumstances.

What was the sequel’s budget—and does it prove the film lost money?

Published production-budget estimates conflict. AP cited a $36 million production price tag in its opening-weekend coverage. ScreenDollars’ December 14 analysis said the budget “ballooned to $51M.” Neither source establishes an officially confirmed studio budget, so the discrepancy should remain visible rather than be resolved by choosing one estimate. ScreenDollars’ analysis reports the higher figure.

The sequel’s listed worldwide ticket sales exceed either reported production-budget estimate as simple arithmetic. That comparison does not establish profit. Box-office gross is shared with theaters; it is not the amount a studio keeps. The available reporting does not provide the full marketing and distribution costs, theater rentals, financing terms, or revenue from digital, physical-media, and licensing windows needed to calculate the film’s final result. AP called the reported $36 million production “a big win for Blumhouse,” but that is the report’s characterization, not a disclosed profit statement.

So did it need to be a much bigger hit?

“Needs” cannot be answered with a precise box-office target from the available figures. The sequel clearly fell short of the first film’s extraordinary theatrical benchmark and had a pronounced second-weekend drop. At the same time, it opened strongly and accumulated a substantial worldwide gross against reported production costs of $36 million or $51 million. Without complete costs and receipts, the evidence supports saying its theatrical performance was lower than the original’s—not that it was financially unsuccessful or that it needed a particular additional amount to break even.

Where can viewers watch it at home?

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment announced that the film became available to buy or rent on digital platforms on December 23, 2025, followed by 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD on February 17, 2026. The announced physical release includes cast interviews, behind-the-scenes features on animatronics including Mangle and Marionette, and an easter-egg feature. Release availability and editions can vary by retailer and region. Universal’s home-release announcement lists the schedule and features.
