Their cases range from Bitcoin’s monetary-network role to infrastructure services and exchange-linked chain activity. The key question for each is whether network use can create durable value for its token, rather than simply more activity on the network.
What “long-term chain growth” means for a token
A blockchain can attract users, developers, transactions or integrations without delivering comparable returns to token holders. A token’s investment case depends on what gives it demand, how network economics reach it, and whether those forces can persist as competitors and supply change. Adoption indicators are useful evidence about a network; they are not, by themselves, evidence of future token appreciation.
The five candidates below are selected for distinct exposure and evidence visible in 2025, not ranked by return. The evidence comes from different kinds of sources: a16z crypto’s industry report, a Coinbase Institutional outlook published ahead of 2025, network-foundation or project materials, and Binance-affiliated research. Those sources and their dates matter; a project’s own report is not independent certification, and a 2025 snapshot does not establish conditions in 2026.
A common way to compare the cases
- Adoption quality: Look for recurring users, developers, applications and transactions, while distinguishing sustained use from incentives or speculative bursts.
- Value capture: Ask whether fees, service payments, staking or other token mechanisms create demand that accrues to the token, and consider supply changes and unlocks.
- Resilience and competition: Consider congestion, uptime, client and validator diversity, operating costs, substitutes and switching costs.
- Investment risk: Include volatility, regulation, custody and counterparty exposure, technical failures, governance concentration and the possibility of losing some or all invested capital.
Why 2025’s industry themes are context, not a token verdict
a16z crypto’s 2025 report estimated 40–70 million active crypto users and 716 million crypto owners, distinguishing active use from simply holding assets. It also estimated more than 3,400 transactions per second across blockchains, plus $46 trillion in annual stablecoin transactions—or $9 trillion on an adjusted basis. These are broad industry figures from a16z crypto’s report, not measurements of demand for any one token.

Coinbase Institutional’s 2025 Crypto Market Outlook, published ahead of the year, discussed tokenization, stablecoins in payments, broader institutional participation and U.S. spot ETF approvals in the prior year as themes entering 2025. Its authors, David Duong and David Han, wrote: “A demand for fundamentals has started to replace the waning influence of narrative-driven investment strategies, partly due to wider institutional participation.” That was an outlook, not a verified account of what happened throughout 2025 or a current regulatory update.
Bitcoin (BTC): exposure to a monetary-network thesis
What supports the case
Bitcoin is the shortlist’s established monetary-network example. a16z crypto reported that Bitcoin represented more than half of total crypto market capitalization in 2025 and described it as gaining traction as a store of value. That figure indicates scale and market role at the time; it is not a forecast of market share or returns.
What a token holder needs to assess
The thesis rests on continued demand for a scarce digital asset and confidence in Bitcoin’s store-of-value role. Relative network maturity may appeal to investors seeking a different exposure from application platforms, but concentration, volatility and whether that demand endures remain important risks. Market share alone does not show that demand will grow or that BTC will outperform.

Ethereum (ETH): exposure to smart contracts and a broad developer ecosystem
What supports the case
a16z crypto said Bitcoin, Ethereum—including its Layer 2 networks—and Solana attracted the most developers in 2025. Ethereum with its L2s was the top destination for new developers in the report. Coinbase Institutional’s outlook also identified tokenization, stablecoins and expanding onchain uses as sector themes. Together, these points support a case for examining Ethereum’s broad ecosystem, but they do not show that all ecosystem activity benefits ETH.
Where value capture can diverge
Applications and scaling layers can capture activity or fees that do not accrue directly to ETH. A long-term thesis therefore has to consider where fees are paid, how Ethereum and its L2s divide activity and economics, and whether network use creates durable demand for the token. Execution, competition and the trade-offs involved in scaling also matter; developer interest is a leading indicator, not proof of token performance.
Solana (SOL): exposure to a high-activity application network
What the 2025 evidence says
The Solana Foundation’s June 2025 Network Health Report said the network had experienced nearly 16 months of continuous uptime at that point, listed 1,295 consensus validators and three validator clients, and reported no downtime during high network load in January 2025. The same report describes a period of application-level strain during January’s surge: degraded performance at an application service, slippage, incorrectly set priority fees and user-experience problems. These are claims by the Solana Foundation, the network’s own organization, rather than independent validation.

a16z crypto reported a 78% increase in Solana builder interest over two years. Its report says that figure reflects its investment team’s analysis of founders’ stated ecosystem building or interest—not a direct count of production applications. It is evidence of reported interest, not a measure of deployed use or token demand.
What a holder needs to weigh
Solana offers a high-throughput, consumer-application network thesis. Its operational record in the foundation’s report is relevant, but uptime does not by itself establish how the network behaves under every kind of demand; the application issues also show why base-network availability and a user’s actual experience are different measures. Validator distribution, client diversity, congestion behavior and the costs of operating infrastructure belong in the assessment alongside activity and competition.

Chainlink (LINK): exposure to oracle and interoperability services
How its token economics are described
LINK is not another layer-1 token; it is exposure to infrastructure services. Chainlink’s official economics page says: “LINK is the native token of the Chainlink Network used to pay for services, enhance network security, and incentivize reliable performance.” The page describes payment abstraction that converts service fees into LINK, a reserve funded through offchain and onchain revenue, and staking as a security mechanism.

Chainlink’s year-end 2025 recap reports institutional integrations, including a UBS tokenized-fund workflow on Ethereum, and says the Chainlink Reserve accumulates LINK using converted revenue. These are Chainlink’s own descriptions of its products and integrations. An integration shows a connection or use case, not the scale or recurrence of paid demand.
The central value-capture question
Assess whether recurring, paid use of Chainlink services and the token mechanisms create durable LINK demand relative to supply and unlock schedules. Chainlink’s live economics page displayed a 1 billion LINK total supply cap when accessed in 2026. It also displayed more than $36 trillion in transaction value enabled; Chainlink describes that as cumulative value facilitated by oracles, including volume and facilitated flow, not Chainlink revenue. Neither metric alone establishes revenue available to token holders or future appreciation.

What supports the case
Binance Research’s summary of its year-end 2025 report describes BNB Chain retail activity and expansion in stablecoin settlement and real-world-asset deployments. This makes BNB a case to examine for retail distribution and activity on a chain connected to a major exchange ecosystem. Binance Research is exchange-affiliated, so its account should be weighed with that institutional context.

What could weaken the case
Binance Research also cautions that activity did not consistently translate into fees, durable value capture or token performance across layer-1 networks. For BNB, the key question is whether use creates lasting demand for the token. Consider the chain’s relationship to its exchange operator, governance and concentration risks, and whether competing networks can offer similar services. Activity counts or deployment announcements are not substitutes for evidence about token economics.

The evidence is not directly comparable: a market-share estimate, developer destination, uptime report, vendor-described integration and exchange-affiliated activity summary measure different things. Nor does this shortlist establish which token performed best in 2025; the cited material does not provide a validated return ranking. Treat each as a different hypothesis to evaluate, not as an interchangeable bet on “blockchain growth.”
Risks that apply to every candidate
Crypto tokens can lose substantial or all of their value. Network adoption, technical strength and a plausible use case cannot remove market, regulatory, custody, counterparty or governance risk. A network can succeed while its token performs poorly if the token does not capture the value created, if demand fades, or if supply and competition outweigh usage. The material cited here does not establish current prices, market capitalizations, legal status, ETF availability or 2026 network conditions, so none should be inferred from these 2025 examples.
