Five animated features landed in the U.S. domestic weekend box-office top 10 for the October 11, 2024 chart: The Wild Robot, Piece by Piece, Transformers One, My Hero Academia: You’re Next and The Nightmare Before Christmas. TheWrap described it as the first time that had happened; that is the outlet’s historical characterization, not a claim independently verified against every earlier chart here.
Which animated films made the top 10?
TheWrap’s October 14, 2024 report identified five animated films on the domestic weekend chart for the frame of October 11. Their positions and the weekend grosses later reported by Bounding Into Comics, citing The Numbers, are shown below. The dollar amounts are period-specific figures reported in October 2024, not current totals.
| Chart position | Film | Reported weekend gross | Release context |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | The Wild Robot | $14,000,945 | DreamWorks feature |
| 5 | Piece by Piece | $3,851,355 | Focus Features animated music documentary |
| 6 | Transformers One | $3,763,855 | Paramount franchise feature |
| 8 | My Hero Academia: You’re Next | $3,007,027 | Toho International domestic release |
| 9 | The Nightmare Before Christmas | $2,419,235 | Disney re-release of Henry Selick’s stop-motion film |
Placement and gross figures are from the October 2024 reporting: TheWrap named the titles and positions; Bounding Into Comics’ October 17 follow-up gave the listed grosses and said its chart was sourced from The Numbers.
Why the group was notable
The five entries occupied positions 2, 5, 6, 8 and 9—half of the chart’s ten places. They also represented different kinds of animation and filmmaking: family adventure, an animated music documentary, a franchise feature, anime and a stop-motion re-release. In other words, the count was not limited to one genre, format or audience.

TheWrap called the occurrence a historic first in its October 14 report. The available contemporaneous coverage establishes what appeared on that weekend’s chart and how the outlet framed it; it does not provide a reconstruction of every past weekend chart. The careful takeaway is therefore that TheWrap reported this as the first time, rather than treating the all-time superlative as independently audited.

The weekend grosses are a snapshot of that chart frame, not the films’ lifetime earnings or present-day totals. TheWrap also reported at the time that The Wild Robot was nearing $150 million globally and Transformers One had passed $50 million domestically and $100 million worldwide. Those were October 14, 2024 milestones, not current cumulative figures.
A chart position and a weekend gross describe results, but they do not by themselves explain why a film placed where it did. The cited reporting does not establish that release status, genre, distributor or any other single factor caused these outcomes.
