Yes, a Fisker Ocean door could fail to open, according to owner reports reviewed by federal safety investigators. But the reports did not establish that every Ocean had the problem. NHTSA opened an investigation into certain 2023 models in April 2024; a separate recall announced that June addressed sticking exterior door handles on certain 2023–2024 vehicles.
What NHTSA investigated
On April 1, 2024, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Office of Defects Investigation opened preliminary evaluation PE24-010 concerning model-year 2023 Fisker Ocean vehicles. In an April 8 information request, the agency said it had received 14 reports of intermittent failures involving the driver, front passenger and/or rear doors. NHTSA’s investigation record describes the allegations; an investigation opening is an inquiry, not a finding that each vehicle had a defect.
Some reports alleged that occupants could not open a door using either its interior or exterior handle, and that an emergency override also failed, forcing them to exit through another door. These were reported experiences, not a determination that all of those failure modes affected all vehicles.
Investigation figures are not a failure rate
NHTSA’s opening resume listed 6,813 model-year 2023 vehicles in the investigation population and 14 incidents. It listed zero crashes, zero injury incidents and zero fatalities at that stage. Those administrative counts do not establish the rate of failures or show that no unreported harm occurred. How the later recall differs
The investigation and recall are related to concerns about doors opening, but they are separate actions with different scopes. NHTSA acknowledged Fisker recall 24V-466 on June 27, 2024. It covers certain 2023–2024 Ocean vehicles and estimates 8,204 potentially affected units. That estimate is not the same measure as the 6,813 model-year 2023 vehicles in the investigation population, and the 14 investigation reports are not a count of vehicles confirmed defective. What caused the recalled exterior-handle problem, and what repair is specified?
In its defect filing, Fisker attributed sticking to dimensional variation in the exterior-handle chassis width. The variation could create friction as the handle deploys or retracts. Fisker’s Part 573 filing, linked in NHTSA’s recall record
The stated remedy is an inspection of all four exterior side-door handles using a supplier-provided force-checking tool. Any handle that receives a “Not Okay” result is to be replaced. This is a specific exterior-handle procedure—not a software fix and not proof that every allegation involving a latch, interior handle or emergency override is resolved by the recall. How Ocean owners can check what to do
- Look up the vehicle identification number (VIN) using NHTSA’s recall lookup.
- Check whether recall 24V-466 applies to that vehicle and whether the repair is listed as incomplete. A campaign’s model-year scope does not confirm an individual vehicle’s status.
- If the recall is open, contact Fisker or the repair contact listed in the current VIN-specific recall instructions to confirm available service and next steps. Do not assume a particular repair location or appointment is available without checking.
NHTSA says recalls do not expire. Fisker’s website previously displayed an enrollment notice for recall repair and reimbursement for model-year 2023 Ocean vehicles with a June 30, 2026 deadline. That date has passed; available records do not establish whether enrollment has reopened or what repair capacity is currently available.
