Glenn Kelman’s Redfin earnings-call remarks could turn mortgage-rate risk into a foxhole, technology into a toaster oven, and a struggling acquisition into Han Solo in carbonite. The selection below comes from GeekWire editor and co-founder Todd Bishop’s March 16, 2025 retrospective, published after Rocket Companies announced a deal to acquire Redfin. It is a curated collection, not a complete archive of Kelman’s remarks.
Market risk, in foxholes and fireballs
Some of Kelman’s sharpest lines put the uncertainty of running a real-estate business into startlingly vivid terms. In June 2024, when an analyst asked what Redfin would do if mortgage rates unexpectedly rose again, Kelman answered: “Plan B is to drink our own urine or our competitors’ blood — stay in the foxhole.”
The joke is darkly comic, but its setting is practical: a question about how the company would respond to a threat to its business. In November 2021, he stated the underlying anxiety more directly: “If you are not scared running a seasonal, cyclical business with fixed costs, there’s something wrong with you.”
Kelman also reached for horror imagery to describe the housing market. On a November 2020 earnings call, he said: “This analogy makes no sense, except the images of the exploding blood and the flamethrower are what always come to mind when people ask me about today’s housing market.” GeekWire connects the image to The Thing, the 1982 film.

Competition, with a little theatrical dread
In 2024, while discussing competitor CoStar Group’s Homes.com advertising and Redfin’s traffic, Kelman recalled: “I spent half the Super Bowl in the bathroom or upstairs making nachos because I didn’t want to see these competitor ads.” The image turns the pressure of a rival’s high-profile campaign into an ordinary, almost sheepish confession.
His fear of another giant was less understated. Discussing the 2019 Amazon–Realogy collaboration, he said: “Nobody is more afraid of Amazon than me. I mean, those guys are animals.”
For a February 2021 earnings call, he described Redfin’s ambition as: “Our goal is just to gain share every quarter for the rest of time.”

Technology needs people, and brands take time
Kelman’s remarks on technology and company culture resisted the idea that software alone could do the work of a real-estate business. In May 2019, he put it this way: “Redfin believes in technology, but technology on its own is just a glorified toaster oven.” The comparison is deliberately deflating: technology matters, but without people and the work they do, it is not a complete answer.
He used fantasy imagery to explain how advertising can build brand value gradually. In August 2019, he compared mass media’s long-term impact to “a Delayed Blast Fireball, if you’ve ever played Dungeons & Dragons.” The spell’s delayed effect makes a useful metaphor for marketing whose influence may accumulate over time rather than show up immediately.
Acquisitions and predictions that did not age well
In May 2021, Kelman described RentPath’s condition before Redfin acquired it. RentPath had gone through bankruptcy and a failed CoStar acquisition; Kelman said the company was “really in the sort of cryogenic suspension like Han Solo at the end of The Empire Strikes Back.” The image compresses a complicated corporate predicament into a pop-culture shorthand.

On a November 2021 call, he addressed extreme predictions about iBuying: “iBuying isn’t going away. … It isn’t the end-all and be-all, the future of real estate. And it isn’t the alpha and omega, the death, the Vishnu god of destruction.” The line rejects both certainty and apocalyptic framing. But, as Bishop notes in the retrospective, Kelman’s prediction that iBuying would not go away proved wrong.

Kelman sometimes undercut his own polished-sounding language. After saying on a February 2021 call, “What we’re trying to do is grow long term by offering a durable value proposition to customers and investors,” he added: “Man, that sounded so canned, but I swear, I just made it up on the spot.”

What this collection captures—and what it does not
Bishop describes the remarks as “a case study in using levity, candor, and humility — plus ample references to pop culture — to navigate the ups and downs of leading a business.” That is the author’s interpretation of Kelman’s style, not proof that humor caused Redfin’s business results.
The retrospective is selective: Bishop says he assembled it from GeekWire reporting and an earnings-call transcript database, and excludes Kelman’s November 2007 60 Minutes line about the real-estate industry and a 2012 essay. Readers should treat the wording and contexts here as the quotations reported in that compilation; for transcript-level precision, consult the linked original call materials in Bishop’s GeekWire article.
