Fire Aboard Morning Midas Raises EV Transport Risks—but Doesn’t Prove an EV Started It

The Morning Midas fire is a serious vehicle-carrier casualty, but smoke reported from a deck carrying EVs does not prove an EV started it. Here’s what the investigations and maritime guidance say.

The vehicle carrier Morning Midas was abandoned after a fire in the North Pacific in June 2025, but the available investigation record does not establish that an electric vehicle caused it. The ship carried about 3,000 vehicles, including 800 EVs; smoke was first reported from a deck carrying EVs. Those facts make the fire relevant to EV transport safety, not proof of its ignition source. The cited review said the cause and origin remained unknown while the casualty was under investigation.

What happened aboard the Morning Midas?

The 600-foot vehicle carrier was transporting cars toward Mexico when it caught fire in the North Pacific. The Associated Press reported that the ship carried around 3,000 vehicles, including 800 electric vehicles. After the crew’s efforts to suppress the fire failed to bring it under control, all 22 crew members left the vessel. AP reported that they were safe and that no injuries had been reported.

AP, citing Coast Guard imagery and a statement from the ship’s management company, said smoke was first seen at the stern from a deck loaded with EVs. That describes where smoke was first reported; it does not identify what ignited. The European Maritime Safety Agency’s technical and regulatory review lists the casualty on June 3, 2025, and says the fire’s origin and cause were unknown and the casualty remained under investigation at the time of that review.

Does the fire show that EVs are more likely to catch fire?

No. A fire aboard a ship carrying EVs cannot by itself establish either that an EV started it or that EVs catch fire more often than other vehicles. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) says current statistics indicate battery electric vehicles are less likely to catch fire than conventional internal-combustion vehicles, and states, “Electric vehicle battery fires are rare.” That frequency statement is distinct from the challenges a battery fire can pose if one occurs.

  • Single-Use or Limited Reuse: Designed for 1–2 uses. High-temperature exposure may cause darkening, stiffening, or burn holes—once damaged, the blanket should be replaced. For repeated use and longer service life, consider our double-sided silicone-coated version

AMSA’s 2023 Marine Notice 2023/07 warns that gases from a BEV fire can form a toxic, potentially explosive vapour cloud and that a fire can re-ignite. The notice gives agency guidance estimates of 6,000 litres of vapour per kilowatt-hour of battery power and 330,000 litres from a 55 kWh battery. These are AMSA’s published figures, not a universal measured outcome for every vehicle fire.

What do other vehicle-carrier fires show?

Other investigations underscore why cargo type alone is not enough to establish cause. Fires can involve different vehicle conditions, electrical faults, detection and response issues. The documented cases below are not a statistical comparison of fire rates.

Incident Vehicles and cause finding Response and outcome
Morning Midas, June 2025 About 3,000 vehicles, including 800 EVs, according to AP. Origin and cause were unknown in the cited EMSA review. The 22 crew abandoned ship after suppression efforts failed; AP reported no injuries among them. AP report; EMSA review.
Fremantle Highway, July 2023 3,784 new cars, including 498 electric cars, according to the Dutch government registry summary of Panama Maritime Authority report R-016-2024-DIAM. The summary reports investigation conclusions about readiness and stowage; it does not provide a specific ignition cause in its summary. The fire spread beyond control within 40 minutes. Seven crew members jumped overboard; one died and the others were rescued by helicopter. Registry summary.
Höegh Xiamen, June 2020 The NTSB attributed the fire’s probable cause to an electrical fault involving an improperly disconnected battery in a used vehicle, after ineffective oversight of vehicle loading failed to identify the issue. Delayed reactivation of fire detection after loading and a delayed decision to release the fixed CO₂ system contributed to detection delay and the fire’s extent. NTSB investigation.

What did the Fremantle Highway investigation identify?

The Dutch government registry summary says the Fremantle Highway was carrying 3,784 new cars, including 498 electric cars, when the fire broke out on July 25, 2023, about 27 kilometres north of Ameland in the Dutch exclusive economic zone. It says the fire spread beyond control within 40 minutes. Seven crew members jumped overboard; one died and the others were rescued by helicopter.

The summary of the Panama Maritime Authority investigation reports several readiness shortcomings: vehicles should be stowed separately and readily identifiable; crew knowledge of battery fires was lacking; cameras and thermal imaging were absent; and communication with the coastguard was too slow. The linked registry page is a summary of report R-016-2024-DIAM, so more specific causal claims require the underlying report’s exact findings.

What makes a shipboard EV fire difficult to manage?

AMSA’s guidance describes risks and precautions for professional shipboard crews, including personnel responding to battery-powered vehicle fires. It warns that vapour may be toxic and potentially explosive, and that hydrogen fluoride may be present and corrosive and toxic. It advises investigating leaks beneath a vehicle because they may indicate a damaged battery casing, and describes water deluge, ventilation, protection from toxic fumes, decontamination and continued monitoring because of possible re-ignition.

For shipboard response, AMSA lists high-voltage-rated gloves, a defibrillator and a gas detector for analysing the atmosphere for explosive gases. This is professional maritime guidance, not advice for untrained people to approach or fight a vehicle fire.

What regulatory work was underway?

At its March 4–8, 2024 session, the International Maritime Organization’s Ship Systems and Equipment Sub-Committee endorsed a roadmap and goal-based approach to reducing fire risk on ships carrying new energy vehicles, including BEVs. The work described reviewing studies and casualty reports, identifying hazards, examining gaps in SOLAS chapter II-2 and developing possible functional requirements for fire detection, control, containment and suppression, including systems that address risks beyond heat and smoke. The IMO meeting summary describes work being carried forward; it does not establish that contemplated amendments have since been adopted.

What the Morning Midas fire does—and does not—tell us

The Morning Midas casualty demonstrates the stakes of a fire aboard a vehicle carrier and the importance of identifying cargo, detecting a fire, training crews and coordinating an emergency response. It does not establish that an EV caused the fire. The cited EMSA review left origin and cause unresolved, while investigations of other vehicle-carrier fires show that non-EV electrical faults and failures in detection or response can also matter.
