England fans travelling to Euro 2024 needed a plan for both cash and card payments, a backup way to reach their money, and suitable travel insurance. The tournament ran in Germany from 14 June to 14 July 2024, so its ticket-holder travel offers have expired. The practical advice below remains useful for overseas travel; anyone planning a trip now should check current FCDO advice for Germany, their bank’s fees and their insurance policy.
How should England fans have planned payments in Germany?
Germany uses the euro. A sensible tournament-era plan was to carry a modest amount of euros alongside at least one bank or credit card, with another route to funds if the main card failed. The Football Supporters’ Association’s 2024 England guide had a “Cash and Card” section and said cash mattered in Germany during the tournament. That was event-era guidance, not a promise that every shop, stall or venue accepted cash—or cards.
GOV.UK’s general advice for travelling abroad recommends considering local currency as well as prepaid, credit and bank cards, and checking which payment methods are usable at the destination. See its guidance on managing money abroad.
Check your card before leaving
- Review your own card’s foreign-transaction and cash-withdrawal charges. No single card or provider can be called cheapest without comparing current terms.
- Check with your bank whether you need to enable overseas use or adjust card controls.
- Save the bank’s contact details and the steps for freezing or stopping a missing card somewhere you can reach without that card.
- Consider carrying a second usable payment method separately from your main wallet.
If a card is lost or funds run short
Contact your bank promptly if a card is lost or stolen. GOV.UK says a bank may be able to provide emergency cash; if you run out of money, contact it to discuss options. Family or friends may also be able to send funds. What is available depends on your bank and circumstances.

Where should you exchange cash, and how can you reduce theft risk?
Current GOV.UK advice for Germany is direct: “Only change money at banks, ATMs or official money exchanges.” It also advises checking your change when paying in cash and warns that British nationals have been arrested for trying to use counterfeit currency. Read the Germany safety and security advice.
Take sensible care of cash and cards in crowded places, particularly airports, stations and large gatherings, where pickpocketing and bag-snatching are concerns. Keep valuables secure and avoid displaying larger amounts of cash. A money belt is one optional way to carry cash; it is not a requirement or a guarantee against theft.

What Euro 2024 transport offers were available to ticket holders?
UEFA’s tournament guide described several travel benefits for eligible fans. These were tied to Euro 2024 dates and conditions; they are historical information, not offers available for a current trip.
| Offer | What the event-era guide said | Conditions and limits |
|---|---|---|
| DB Ticket EURO 2024 | Rail travel within Germany | Required advance booking, was non-refundable and was valid only with the Fan Pass. |
| Interrail discount | 25% off specified Interrail passes for eligible match ticket holders travelling from abroad | Eligibility and travel-date limits applied. |
| Regional public transport pass | A 36-hour pass for the regional network was included with a matchday Fan Pass | Valid from 06:00 on matchday until 18:00 the following day. |
Fans planning at the time needed to check official tournament and rail information early, including route coverage, eligibility, dates, whether a match ticket or Fan Pass was required, advance-booking rules and refund terms. Those dates have passed; for travel now, check current fares and conditions with the relevant rail or local transport operator rather than relying on tournament offers.

What insurance and emergency arrangements should fans have checked?
In May 2024, the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office advised tournament fans to check current travel information, obtain appropriate travel insurance and sign up for email updates. GOV.UK also advises travellers to ask their insurer which costs are covered; an insurer may specify providers for medical care or other services.
Before travelling, read the policy wording for medical cover, cancellation and interruption conditions, exclusions, emergency contact procedures and any required providers. Do not assume a credit card benefit or a standard policy covers a particular loss or expense without checking its terms. The FCDO’s event announcement is available at its Euro 2024 travel advice notice.

Did fans need to declare cash?
For travel from Great Britain to Germany, GOV.UK says cash of £10,000 or more carried between Great Britain and a country outside the UK must be declared. There are group-total rules and separate rules for Northern Ireland routes, so check the relevant details if they apply to your journey. Most football fans would not approach the threshold. See GOV.UK’s cash declaration rules.
