They do show why investors are watching the company: Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac now permit eligible lenders to use VantageScore 4.0 alongside Classic FICO, while Fair Isaac reported strong fiscal third-quarter growth. Neither development, by itself, establishes what caused a particular share-price move.
What is—and is not—known about the “FICO bounce”
Fair Isaac Corporation trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker FICO, according to its Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026. But the available sources do not identify the trading date, price levels, percentage change, analyst action, or catalyst meant by “this FICO bounce.” Without those details, it would be misleading to attribute a move to earnings or mortgage-score policy.

The company’s July 29, 2026 earnings release and the Federal Housing Finance Agency’s mortgage-score update provide relevant business context, not proof of a market reaction. A stock can move for many reasons; establishing a cause requires dated trading information and evidence connecting the move to a specific event.

Mortgage lending is the central competitive issue in the current policy update. The FHFA says that, since September 9, 2026, all lenders approved by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac may use VantageScore 4.0 for eligible loans, subject to the Enterprises’ requirements. Lenders may also continue using Classic FICO. The change expands the models eligible for use; it does not mean every lender has switched or that every loan qualifies.

On September 30, 2026, the Enterprises adjusted upfront fees to align their treatment across Classic FICO and VantageScore 4.0. This changes mortgage pricing treatment for the two models. It is not evidence that lender adoption has accelerated, nor does it establish how many loans will use either score. The FHFA’s credit-scores policy page does not quantify lender implementation or adoption.
How the Enterprise mortgage options compare
| Model | Eligibility described by FHFA | Upfront-fee treatment | What is not established |
|---|---|---|---|
| Classic FICO | May continue to be used by approved Enterprise lenders for eligible loans under Enterprise requirements (FHFA policy page). | Aligned with VantageScore 4.0 as of September 30, 2026 (FHFA policy page). | How many lenders or loans use it; the FHFA policy page does not quantify adoption. |
| VantageScore 4.0 | Available to all approved Enterprise lenders for eligible loans since September 9, 2026, subject to Enterprise requirements (FHFA policy page). | Aligned with Classic FICO as of September 30, 2026 (FHFA policy page). | How many lenders or loans use it; the FHFA policy page does not quantify adoption. |
| FICO 10T | Not currently eligible for delivery, according to FHFA. | Not stated on the FHFA policy page. | When it will become eligible; FHFA says the Enterprises will provide further guidance. |
FHFA’s policy update states: “FICO 10T is not currently eligible for delivery, and the Enterprises will provide additional guidance when FICO 10T becomes available for loan deliveries.” Its status should not be conflated with Classic FICO’s current eligibility.

What FICO’s latest reported results show
For fiscal Q3 2026, Fair Isaac reported revenue of $674.2 million, up 26% year over year, and Scores revenue of $458.9 million, up 41% year over year. The company said the increase in B2B revenue was primarily attributable to a higher mortgage-origination scores unit price. These are reported results for the quarter, not a forecast of what expanded VantageScore eligibility will do to FICO’s future sales.
In the same July 29 release, FICO updated its fiscal 2026 guidance to revenue of $2.53 billion, GAAP earnings per share of $36.86, and non-GAAP earnings per share of $42.43. The two EPS figures use different accounting measures and should not be treated as interchangeable. Guidance is management’s outlook for the fiscal year, not a reported full-year result.

Strong recent revenue growth and a new eligible scoring alternative can both be true. The reported quarter shows growth, including higher mortgage-origination scores pricing as a contributor to B2B revenue; the policy change creates a competitive question about future model use. The sources do not quantify how increased VantageScore use might affect FICO’s mortgage-score revenue, and the reported quarter does not answer that forward-looking question.

To decide whether a headline’s explanation for a FICO move is supported, look for evidence connecting the share-price change to a dated company or policy event. These checks separate business context from a verified market catalyst:

- Pin down the move: identify the trading date and the actual price change. The phrase “bounce” alone gives neither.
- Check the event and timing: compare the move with dated company announcements or policy actions rather than assuming a nearby development caused it.
- Separate eligibility from adoption: permission to use VantageScore 4.0 does not reveal how quickly lenders will implement it or how many loans will use it.
- Separate reported results from future impact: FICO’s quarterly revenue and stated pricing contributor describe the reported period; they do not quantify the effect of future competition.
- Look for an explicit link to the market move: a verified price change and a plausible business development are not, on their own, proof of causation.
