Re:

Federal Student Loans vs. Parent PLUS Loans: Which Fits Your Family?

Direct student loans are the student’s debt; Parent PLUS is the parent’s. Compare eligibility, 2026 borrowing limits, rates and fees, interest treatment, and repayment options before deciding.

Direct student loans put the legal repayment obligation on the student; Parent PLUS puts it on the parent. That difference should anchor the decision. Compare the loans the student is actually offered, the parent’s eligibility and borrowing limit, each loan’s rate and fee, and the repayment options available to its borrower. For academic years beginning on or after July 1, 2026, Parent PLUS limits and a transition exception also make the student’s school, program, and enrollment history important.

Start with the borrower: who will legally owe the money?

An eligible student may borrow a federal Direct Subsidized Loan or Direct Unsubsidized Loan. The student is the borrower and is responsible for repaying that debt. A Parent PLUS loan is borrowed by the parent, who remains legally responsible for repayment. A family can agree that the student will help make payments, but that private arrangement does not change who owes the federal loan.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

A Parent PLUS loan cannot be transferred to the child. Federal Student Aid states: “No, a Direct PLUS Loan made to a parent cannot be transferred to the child.” That means families should not treat a parent’s loan as a temporary way to borrow on the student’s behalf with an expectation that the student can later assume the federal obligation.

In practice, ask two separate questions: which borrower can obtain the loan, and which borrower can realistically carry repayment? The parent’s income, other obligations, and future plans matter if the parent will be legally liable. The student’s likely ability to repay matters for student loans. A family conversation about sharing costs is useful, but it is not a substitute for deciding whose name and legal responsibility will be attached to each loan.

How the two choices compare

Decision point Direct Subsidized or Unsubsidized Loan Parent PLUS Loan
Borrower The eligible student The eligible parent
Who is legally responsible for repayment? The student borrower The parent borrower; the loan cannot be transferred to the student
Who can qualify? An eligible student; the student’s aid offer and eligibility determine which Direct Loans are available A biological or adoptive parent, or qualifying stepparent, of an eligible dependent undergraduate enrolled at least half time, subject to federal requirements and the credit-history rules
How much can be borrowed? Review the student’s actual federal loan offer; no student-loan dollar limits are specified here For academic years beginning on or after July 1, 2026, generally up to $20,000 annually and $65,000 in aggregate per dependent student outside the transition exception; a school may set a lower amount
Interest treatment while the student is in school Subsidized-loan borrowers are not responsible for interest accruing while in school; unsubsidized borrowers are responsible for accrued interest Interest accrues during an eligible in-school deferment; the parent may pay it or it may be capitalized
Rate and fee to check Use the rate and fee tied to the student loan’s own first-disbursement year; the figures in this article do not establish a student-loan rate For loans first disbursed July 1, 2026–June 30, 2027, the fixed rate is 9.07%; the stated loan fee is 4.228% for PLUS loans first disbursed on or after October 1, 2020
Repayment-plan access Depends on the loan and relevant dates; confirm current eligibility Limited income-driven repayment access applies to Parent PLUS and to consolidations that include Parent PLUS under the stated rules; confirm eligibility for the particular loan

The table is a starting point, not a substitute for the student’s aid offer or the parent’s loan terms. A student may have a subsidized loan, an unsubsidized loan, or both, while Parent PLUS eligibility and limits depend on the parent, dependent student, academic year, and—in some cases—the student’s continuity in a particular program and school.

What Parent PLUS eligibility requires

Parent PLUS is available for a dependent undergraduate student, not for every relative who wants to help with college expenses. The borrower must be the student’s biological or adoptive parent or a qualifying stepparent, and the student must be enrolled at least half time. A grandparent or legal guardian does not qualify unless that person legally adopted the student.

  • The parent must meet federal student aid requirements.
  • The parent must not have an adverse credit history, unless the additional requirements for proceeding after an adverse-credit determination are met.
  • The student must be an eligible dependent undergraduate enrolled at least half time.
  • The relationship must qualify: biological parent, adoptive parent, or qualifying stepparent. A grandparent or legal guardian is not enough without legal adoption.

Complete the FAFSA before applying for Parent PLUS. The FAFSA is also the practical first step for reviewing the student’s aid offer and understanding what other aid is available before the family considers parent borrowing. If the parent is uncertain about eligibility or the student’s dependency status, the school’s financial aid office can help interpret the student’s situation.

Understand the Parent PLUS limits that begin July 1, 2026

For academic years beginning on or after July 1, 2026, the general Parent PLUS borrowing cap is $20,000 per year and $65,000 in total for each dependent student. These limits apply to parents outside a defined transition exception. Schools may set a lower amount based on the program, so the federal cap is not a promise that a school will allow borrowing up to the full figure.

The exception generally preserves the prior cost-of-attendance-minus-other-aid limit for a qualifying parent. It can apply when the student was enrolled in the same program at the same school as of June 30, 2026, and a Direct Loan for that program had been borrowed before July 1, 2026—or a Parent PLUS loan had been borrowed for that student in that program. The student must remain continuously enrolled in that same program and school.

That is a narrow, date- and enrollment-dependent rule, not a general exemption for families who borrowed before 2026. Before relying on it, confirm the student’s program, school, enrollment continuity, and qualifying prior borrowing with the financial aid office. A change in program or school, or a break in continuous enrollment, may affect whether the exception applies. Do not assume the cost-of-attendance-minus-aid amount remains available without confirmation.

Compare the actual rate, fee, and amount deposited

For Parent PLUS loans first disbursed from July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2027, Federal Student Aid lists a fixed interest rate of 9.07%. The rate is tied to the first-disbursement window: a prior year’s Parent PLUS rate should not be reused to estimate a loan first disbursed in a different year.

Federal Student Aid lists a 4.228% loan fee for PLUS loans first disbursed on or after October 1, 2020. The fee is deducted proportionately from disbursements. Consequently, the amount the school receives is less than the amount borrowed by the fee withheld, while the parent remains responsible for repaying the loan obligation. When comparing financing needs, distinguish the loan’s stated amount from its net proceeds and check the fee that applies to the specific disbursement.

The 9.07% figure is for the 2026–27 Parent PLUS disbursement window only; it is not a rate for every Parent PLUS loan or for Direct student loans. For a student loan or a Parent PLUS loan with a different first-disbursement date, use the official rate and fee applicable to that loan year. Compare the full terms for each loan offered rather than treating “federal” as meaning the rates or costs are identical.

Account for interest while the student is in school

Interest treatment differs between Direct Subsidized and Direct Unsubsidized Loans. A borrower with a subsidized loan is not responsible for interest accruing while in school. A borrower with an unsubsidized loan is responsible for accrued interest. The student should check which type appears in the aid offer rather than assuming all Direct Loans have the same in-school treatment.

A parent may request deferment on a Parent PLUS loan while the student is enrolled at least half time and for six months after the student leaves school, graduates, or drops below half-time enrollment. Deferment postpones required payments; it does not stop interest from accruing. The parent may pay that interest as it accrues or it may be capitalized. Include this accrued interest in the family’s cost comparison when considering a period without payments.

Repayment plans are borrower- and date-dependent

Do not assume that the parent can use a repayment plan available to the student. Parent PLUS loans and consolidations that include Parent PLUS have limited access to income-driven repayment under the stated rules, and the available options depend on the loan and consolidation dates. Confirm the current eligibility rules for the specific loan through the official account, school, or servicer before choosing to borrow or consolidate.

Federal Student Aid’s repayment calculator can help estimate payments for plans a borrower is eligible to use. A calculator estimate is not a determination of eligibility or a final loan term. Use it only after identifying the loan type and plan options that apply, then verify the resulting terms with the official account or servicer. The family should also test whether the payment fits the borrower’s budget without relying on a hoped-for transfer to the student.

What to do if Parent PLUS is denied

If a Parent PLUS application is denied because of adverse credit, the dependent student may be eligible to borrow additional Direct Unsubsidized Loan funds. This is not automatic for every student or every denial: ask the school’s financial aid office to determine whether the student qualifies and what additional amount, if any, is available.

Compare that student borrowing option with the parent’s available path before deciding what to do next. Any extra unsubsidized borrowing would be the student’s debt, while a Parent PLUS loan remains the parent’s debt. The distinction matters even if the family expects the same household to help pay either loan.

Questions to answer before accepting either loan

  • What exact subsidized and unsubsidized amounts are listed in the student’s aid offer, and how much of the education bill remains after grants and other aid?
  • Who will be the legal borrower, and can that person make payments if the student’s income, employment, or family circumstances change?
  • What is each loan’s first-disbursement date, interest rate, fee, and net amount delivered to the school?
  • Is the student enrolled at least half time, and does the parent meet the qualifying relationship and credit-history requirements?
  • Does the student’s school, program, and enrollment history satisfy the July 1, 2026 Parent PLUS transition exception, or does the $20,000 annual/$65,000 aggregate cap apply?
  • Which repayment plans are actually available to this borrower and loan, and when will required payments begin?

Write down the answers using the official aid offer and account information. This prevents a common mistake: comparing an estimated Parent PLUS amount with the student’s gross aid offer while overlooking the PLUS fee, accrued interest, or the different person who must repay.

Common mistakes that can make a loan look safer than it is

  • Assuming the debt can be transferred. A family promise that the graduate will pay does not change the parent’s federal liability.
  • Using an old interest rate. Parent PLUS rates are tied to the loan’s first-disbursement window. The 9.07% rate applies only from July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2027.
  • Treating the cap as a target. The $20,000 annual and $65,000 aggregate figures are maximums for parents outside the exception, not recommendations to borrow that much.
  • Ignoring the fee. The 4.228% fee reduces each PLUS disbursement, so the amount borrowed and the amount credited to the school are different.
  • Assuming every relative qualifies. A grandparent or legal guardian generally cannot use Parent PLUS unless the person legally adopted the student.
  • Assuming a payment pause eliminates interest. Interest continues during an eligible Parent PLUS deferment and can be paid or capitalized.
  • Assuming a student’s income-driven plan applies to the parent. Parent PLUS and consolidations containing Parent PLUS have limited access, subject to loan and date rules.
  • Relying on the transition exception without checking continuity. A program change, school change, or break in continuous enrollment may affect eligibility for the prior-limit treatment.

A practical order for making the decision

  1. Submit the FAFSA. Federal Student Aid advises completing it before applying for PLUS. Review the full aid offer and grants before adding debt.
  2. Identify the student’s federal loan offer. Separate subsidized from unsubsidized amounts and note the borrower, applicable rate and fee, and the student’s responsibility for accrued interest.
  3. Ask the school about any additional student eligibility. If Parent PLUS is denied for adverse credit, specifically ask whether the dependent student may borrow additional unsubsidized funds.
  4. Check Parent PLUS eligibility and the applicable limit. Confirm the parent’s relationship to the student, the student’s half-time enrollment, federal requirements, credit-history status, and whether the 2026 transition exception could apply.
  5. Verify the loan-year cost. Use the rate for the loan’s first-disbursement date and account for the fee deducted from PLUS disbursements. Do not use the 2026–27 rate for a different loan year.
  6. Confirm repayment access and timing. Determine which repayment plans actually apply to the particular borrower and loan dates. Estimate payments only for eligible plans.
  7. Choose an amount the legal borrower can repay. A cap is a maximum, not a recommendation to borrow that amount. Consider the borrower’s ability to manage payments alongside existing expenses and obligations.

Which option is more likely to fit?

Direct student borrowing is the clearer fit when the student is eligible for the offered loan, and the family wants the student—not the parent—to hold the federal repayment obligation. A subsidized loan has an additional in-school interest advantage for its borrower. For unsubsidized borrowing, account for interest accrued while the student is in school.

Parent PLUS may be considered when a qualifying parent is eligible, the family has compared the student’s federal offer and other aid, the applicable limit permits the needed amount, and the parent is prepared to remain legally responsible for repayment. Its cost should be evaluated using the relevant disbursement-year rate and fee, while its repayment options should be checked for the specific loan.

Neither choice should be made solely because the loan is available or because a household expects to share payments. The deciding comparison is the amount and terms of the actual loans, the identity of each legal borrower, and whether that borrower can repay under the options genuinely available to them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should my child take federal student loans or should I take Parent PLUS?

Start with the student’s actual Direct Loan offer, especially any subsidized amount, and compare its rate, fee, repayment access, and total needed against Parent PLUS terms. Student loans become the student’s legal debt; Parent PLUS remains the parent’s. Choose only an amount the named borrower can repay.

Can a Parent PLUS loan be transferred to my child later?

No. Federal Student Aid says a Direct PLUS Loan made to a parent cannot be transferred to the child. A family agreement for the student to help with payments does not change the parent’s legal responsibility.

How much can a parent borrow for college?

For academic years beginning on or after July 1, 2026, parents outside the transition exception generally face a $20,000 annual and $65,000 aggregate cap per dependent student. The school may allow less, and qualifying families may remain under the prior cost-of-attendance-minus-other-aid limit.

What happens if a Parent PLUS application is denied?

Because of an adverse-credit denial, the dependent student may qualify for additional Direct Unsubsidized Loan funds. The school’s financial aid office must determine eligibility and the available amount; it is not automatic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Parent PLUS interest accrue while my child is in school?

Yes. A parent may request deferment while the student is enrolled at least half time and for six months afterward, but interest continues to accrue. The parent can pay it as it accrues or it may be capitalized.

Can a grandparent or legal guardian take out Parent PLUS?

Generally no. Parent PLUS is for a biological or adoptive parent or qualifying stepparent of an eligible dependent undergraduate. A grandparent or legal guardian does not qualify unless that person legally adopted the student.

Can a parent use the same income-driven repayment plan as the student?

Do not assume so. Parent PLUS loans and consolidations that include Parent PLUS have limited income-driven repayment access, and eligibility depends on the loan and consolidation dates. Verify the current rules for the specific account.

The Bottom Line

Use the student’s federal Direct Loan offer first as the comparison baseline, then evaluate Parent PLUS only if a qualifying parent can comfortably carry the legal obligation. Check the first-disbursement rate and fee, the 2026 annual and aggregate caps or transition exception, accrued interest during deferment, and the repayment plans actually available. A lower borrowed amount and a clearly affordable payment are more important than borrowing up to any published maximum.
