The Fantastic Four: First Steps has a reported production budget of $200 million and a reported worldwide theatrical gross of $521.9 million. That gross topped a $500 million profitability estimate published by ScreenDollars in August 2025, but the comparison alone cannot confirm that the movie made a profit: the estimate is not an official Disney break-even figure, and box-office gross is not the same as the money a studio keeps.
How much did Fantastic Four: First Steps cost?
The Numbers lists a $200 million production budget for The Fantastic Four: First Steps. This is a reported database figure, not a budget disclosure from Disney. It describes production spending, not the full cost of releasing and marketing the film. The Numbers’ film page also reports the movie’s theatrical grosses.

| Measure | Reported figure | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Production budget | $200 million | The Numbers’ database listing; not an official Disney financial disclosure. |
| Domestic theatrical gross | $274,286,610 | U.S. and Canadian ticket sales as reported by The Numbers. |
| International theatrical gross | $247,572,118 | International ticket sales as reported by The Numbers. |
| Worldwide theatrical gross | $521,858,728 | The domestic and international grosses combined, as reported by The Numbers. |
The Numbers’ reported worldwide total is about 2.6 times the listed production budget. That ratio is not a break-even calculation: theaters retain part of ticket sales, and production budget does not include every expense or account for later revenue.

What box office did it need to succeed?
In a newsletter published August 3, 2025, ScreenDollars estimated that the film would need $500 million in worldwide sales to be profitable. This was an outside industry assessment, not a threshold Disney publicly declared. ScreenDollars’ August 3, 2025 newsletter is the source for that estimate.
Compared with that estimate, The Numbers’ reported worldwide gross is $21,858,728 higher—about $21.9 million. This is simply the difference between a reported gross and ScreenDollars’ estimated target. It does not show that the studio received that amount above its costs, or establish that the film was profitable.
Why box-office gross does not settle profitability
Worldwide gross is the total value of tickets sold. The distributor receives only a share of that total after the box office is divided with exhibitors. A film’s full financial result can also depend on marketing and distribution expenses, financing, tax incentives, and revenue from later windows such as home entertainment or streaming.
The available figures do not provide the film’s complete cost ledger, distributor receipts, or an official Disney statement confirming profitability. There is no single dependable box-office multiplier that settles break-even for every movie. The defensible conclusion is that The Fantastic Four: First Steps exceeded ScreenDollars’ dated $500 million estimate in reported worldwide ticket sales; the figures here do not prove whether it ultimately made or lost money.

How the opening weekend compares with the final gross
Disney reported a worldwide opening weekend of $218 million, made up of $118 million domestically and $100 million internationally, in its July 27, 2025 announcement. Disney’s announcement also said 46% of the domestic opening-weekend box office came from Premium Large Format, IMAX, 3D, or specialty formats, and that the film played in 4,125 domestic locations.
The Numbers separately lists a domestic opening weekend of $117,644,828. That is a domestic-only opening measure, whereas Disney’s $218 million figure is worldwide; the two should not be treated as competing estimates of the same total. The Associated Press also reported the $218 million worldwide debut and described it as Marvel’s first $100 million domestic opening of 2025. Comscore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian told the AP, “I always say it’s bad movie fatigue, not superhero fatigue.” The AP report provides that context.
Where to watch or collect the film
Disney’s official movie page lists Disney+ streaming availability beginning November 5; availability can vary by region. Check Disney’s movie page for its current regional listing. The Numbers lists a September 23, 2025 video release by Walt Disney Home Entertainment, and Marvel Japan lists an official Blu-ray/DVD set; format and availability differ by market.
