The FAA announced a 10-day restriction covering El Paso International Airport on February 10, 2026, citing “special security reasons.” It lifted the restriction the next morning, within hours of it taking effect, and said there was no threat to commercial aviation. The FAA did not publicly identify the cause, and accounts offered at the time conflicted.
What happened in El Paso?
On February 10, 2026, the FAA announced a temporary restriction over El Paso and nearby airspace, including El Paso International Airport. The public notice cited “special security reasons” but gave no specific explanation, according to The Texas Tribune. Axios reported that the restriction covered a 10-mile radius centered on El Paso. It applied to U.S. airspace and did not extend into Mexico, according to contemporaneous reporting.
The announced restriction was expected to stop commercial, cargo and general aviation flights at the airport. It was initially described as lasting 10 days, but the FAA lifted it on the morning of February 11—within hours of its taking effect.
Why did the FAA impose the restriction?
The FAA’s public notice cited only “special security reasons.” Later explanations differed, and the available public accounts do not establish one definitive cause or a complete chain of decision-making.

The administration’s account
An administration official told the Associated Press that the closure was related to Mexican cartel drones breaching U.S. airspace. AP reported that the official did not say how many drones were involved or what was done to disable them. The Texas Tribune also reported that Rep. Veronica Escobar disputed the administration’s account.
Other accounts reported at the time
The Texas Tribune reported accounts involving military unmanned aircraft and, citing AP, an anti-drone laser operation. Those accounts came from unnamed sources. They conflict with or complicate the cartel-drone explanation, so none should be treated as a confirmed explanation for the restriction.

When did flights resume?
The FAA lifted the restriction on February 11. In a statement reproduced by The Texas Tribune, the agency said: “The temporary closure of airspace over El Paso has been lifted. There is no threat to commercial aviation. All flights will resume as normal.”
This was a short-lived 2026 event, not a 10-day airport shutdown. Anyone planning travel now should check directly with their airline for current flight status rather than rely on reports about the temporary restriction.

The airport advised travelers to contact their airlines for flight-status updates. These reported effects describe the immediate disruption; they do not establish that flights remain affected today.
