Expedia Group’s reported elimination of 36 jobs in Washington was part of a broader workforce review announced earlier in 2024—not the company’s total global cuts. GeekWire reported the 36-worker figure on May 29, 2024, citing a Washington state WARN filing and confirmation from an Expedia spokesperson.
What Expedia’s 36-worker figure covered
The 36 figure referred to workers in Washington identified in a filing with the Washington Employment Security Department’s Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) system. GeekWire reported the filing and said an Expedia spokesperson confirmed the cuts. The report was published May 29, 2024; it is not a new layoff announcement in 2026. GeekWire’s May 29 report
How the state and global figures differ
Expedia had announced a broader operational review earlier in 2024. GeekWire reported that a February internal memo said about 1,500 roles globally could be affected, primarily in Product & Technology. The 36 Washington roles were described as part of that review, not as Expedia’s complete worldwide reduction.

These counts describe different geographic scopes and filing or announcement contexts. The available reporting does not establish that the 36 and 208 counts can be added together or that one replaces the other. Expedia also estimated $80 million to $100 million in pre-tax charges related to the broader layoffs, according to a regulatory filing as reported by GeekWire; that estimate is not a measure of the 36 Washington jobs alone.

What Expedia said about the review
Expedia described its rationale as a focus on completed technical milestones, essential work and investment in growth areas. The statement explains the company’s stated reasoning for the review; it does not independently establish why each individual role was affected.

What a Washington WARN filing can show
Washington ESD says its WARN database lists employer and location, effective date, affected-worker count, layoff or closure type and permanence, and the date the notice was received. It also provides downloadable notices. The agency notes that Washington’s law sets specific criteria for covered closures, mass layoffs and hours reductions, so not every job loss appears in the WARN system.
