They combine a publisher’s chosen data—such as employer reputation, academic reputation, salary change and class profile—using fixed weights. A high position means a program performed well under that particular model and edition. It does not predict your promotion, salary, return on tuition or personal fit.
Use a ranking to create a shortlist, then investigate schedule, location, curriculum, total cost, admissions requirements and cohort compatibility directly with each school. The method matters as much as the number beside a program.

What an executive MBA ranking actually tells you
An EMBA ranking answers a bounded question: how selected programs compare on the indicators and weights chosen by one publisher. The result is an aggregate score. It is not an accreditation decision, a teaching-quality audit or a forecast of an individual graduate’s career.

Different tables can therefore be correct while ordering schools differently. They may cover different countries, include different programs, collect data in different years or assign different importance to reputation, career outcomes and class composition. Always read the publisher, edition year, geography and eligibility rules before interpreting a position.

How the current QS Executive MBA framework is weighted
QS divides its current EMBA methodology into five groups. The group weights total 100% and determine how much each family of indicators can influence the overall result.

In practical terms, a program’s score reflects the mix of reputation surveys, reported career results and characteristics of its executive cohort. QS says its bespoke methodology seeks to highlight programs with “strong links to industry, positive career returns, and offer value for money.” That is the framework’s stated purpose, not a guarantee that every student will receive those outcomes.
Reputation is an input, not a direct teaching inspection
Employer reputation and academic reputation are survey-based signals. They can indicate how a school is perceived by relevant audiences, but they are not the same as a classroom observation, a standardized test of teaching or a survey of every current student.

Mean salary increase and the share of graduates promoted summarize a graduating group. They do not establish that an applicant will receive the same increase or promotion. Industry, seniority, geography, prior compensation, employer policy and the decision to change jobs can all affect an individual result.
Profile indicators describe the cohort
Work experience, managerial experience and C-suite experience help show who is in the class. A cohort with more senior executives may be valuable for peer learning, but the percentage itself cannot tell you whether those people work in your target sector or whether the classroom dynamic suits your style.

Where QS gets its data—and what it does not survey
QS states that its EMBA ranking uses the QS Global Employer Survey and QS Academic Survey, school-submitted program data and specific program indicators. Its FAQ answers “Not directly.” when asked whether alumni are surveyed as part of the ranking. Alumni may be contacted if they have become academics or hold hiring responsibility, but alumni information does not directly build or inform the EMBA ranking.
That distinction matters. The QS table is not a direct alumni-satisfaction poll. It also means you should seek first-hand evidence yourself: ask schools for current student and alumni contacts, retention information, teaching formats and recent class outcomes, then check whether those details match your objectives.
Eligibility determines which programs can appear
QS eligibility requires all of the following conditions described on its methodology page:
- A qualifying accreditation—AACSB, AMBA, EQUIS or EPAS—or at least three QS Stars.
- An average class size of at least 20.
- At least one graduating class.
These gates shape the universe being compared. “Not ranked” can mean a program did not meet an eligibility rule, did not submit sufficient data or was outside that edition’s scope; it should not casually be read as “inferior.” Ask the school which condition applies before drawing a quality conclusion.
Edition year and data timing change the result
Rankings are snapshots. The most recent QS result examined here is the 2025 global edition, which placed Oxford Saïd first, HEC Paris second, IESE third, MIT Sloan fourth and London Business School fifth. Those positions describe that edition, not a permanent hierarchy.

QS reports that ranking research begins in November and publication occurs in April. For the cycle labeled 2026–2027 on its support page, institution data collection is listed for September 15 through December 31, 2026; survey-contact submission runs from September 15, 2026 through January 15, 2027; and academic and employer surveys are scheduled for February–March 2027. A later edition can therefore reflect newer cohorts, updated reputation responses and revised submissions.
How movement should be read
QS says Warwick rose five places into the 2025 top 10, primarily because of improved employer reputation. Yale rose two places, with improvements in mean work experience and student gender ratio. These examples show how a table can move when measured indicators change. A five-place move does not prove that teaching changed dramatically, and a two-place move does not quantify an applicant’s likely benefit.
Why two reputable rankings can disagree
Before comparing positions, align the following dimensions:

| What geography and scope? | A global, regional, national or joint-program table is not measuring the same pool. |
| Which programs are included? | Accreditation, class-size, graduating-class and data rules can exclude otherwise relevant programs. |
| Which inputs and weights? | A reputation-heavy model can order schools differently from one emphasizing salary or promotion. |
| Are the underlying years comparable? | Survey and outcome data may refer to different cohorts or collection windows. |
QS publishes global, regional and joint-program tables. Its 2025 article also reported that the United States had more ranked institutions than France, China, the United Kingdom, Spain and Canada combined. That is a statement about QS’s ranked set, not a conclusion that one country delivers better outcomes for every executive.
As a separate example of scope effects, Poets&Quants’ 2025–2026 U.S. composite required a stand-alone U.S. program ranked by at least one of three agencies. It compared 72 programs, up from 63 the prior year, while noting uneven overlap among the underlying lists. That count belongs to that composite; it is not a universal count of EMBA programs.

Do not fill gaps with unrelated formulas. A 2021 GMAC/mba.com guide describes Financial Times methodology for full-time MBA programs, including dated figures of 40% compensation and 20% internationalization. Those figures are not a current Executive MBA formula.

Personal fit and constraints
A rank cannot tell you whether a program’s class meets on Fridays, alternate weekends or intensive blocks; whether travel is manageable; or whether the campus and online mix works with your job and family. Confirm the academic calendar, attendance expectations, residency requirements and make-up policy.
Curriculum relevance
Two highly ranked programs may emphasize different subjects, teaching cases, electives, consulting projects or international components. Compare the modules you actually need—such as finance, operations, technology strategy or entrepreneurship—and ask how often the syllabus changes.
Total cost and financing
Published tuition is only one line. Add fees, travel, lodging for residencies, books, technology and income or leave costs. Check payment schedules, employer sponsorship rules, scholarship conditions and refund policies. A ranking’s “value for money” objective does not calculate your personal return on tuition.

A promoted graduate may owe the result to prior performance, an employer-wide promotion cycle, a job change or the degree itself. Ranking data can show an association at cohort level, but it does not isolate the degree’s causal effect for you.

Peer network quality for your goals
Executive Profile and diversity percentages do not reveal every useful dimension of a network. Investigate industries, functions, countries, company sizes, founder experience and the strength of alumni engagement in the locations where you plan to work.
Unranked alternatives
Eligibility rules and table scope can omit smaller, newer, specialized or otherwise relevant programs. A school outside a table deserves the same basic checks: accreditation, graduating outcomes, faculty, curriculum, schedule, cost and references from recent participants.
A practical way to use rankings in your shortlist
- Choose the right table. Record the publisher, edition year, geography and whether the program is a stand-alone or joint offering.
- Read the methodology first. Note the indicator groups, weights, data years, survey sources and eligibility gates.
- Inspect components, not only position. Identify whether a program’s apparent strength comes from employer reputation, academic reputation, career progression, executive profile or diversity.
- Set non-ranking requirements. Write down your maximum travel time, schedule needs, target subjects, budget, financing plan and preferred cohort profile.
- Verify with the school. Request the latest class profile, promotion and salary definitions, completion data, curriculum, calendar, fees and accreditation evidence.
- Speak with participants. Ask current students and recent graduates what the workload, network access, teaching quality and career support are actually like.
- Score your own priorities. Use a simple worksheet and give your constraints more weight than a small difference in published rank.
A decision worksheet that keeps the rank in proportion

Questions to ask before treating a rank as evidence
- Which graduating classes and survey periods supplied the reported outcomes?
- How does the school define “salary increase” and “promoted,” and are results reported as means or medians?
- What proportion of the class responded, and are non-respondents included?
- What costs beyond tuition should a commuter or international student budget?
- How many required days away from work are there, and what happens if you miss one?
- Which employers, sectors and countries are represented in the current cohort?
- What changed in the curriculum, faculty or delivery format since the edition’s data were collected?
The bottom line on EMBA rankings
An executive MBA ranking is useful when you treat it as a transparent, edition-specific screening device. QS measures a defined combination of reputation, career progression, executive experience and diversity, subject to eligibility and data rules. It does not directly survey alumni satisfaction, measure every aspect of teaching or forecast your personal result.
Use the position to find programs worth investigating, then make the decision from the components and from evidence that the table cannot supply: schedule, location, curriculum, complete cost, cohort fit and your own career plan.
