Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) is the enterprise-infrastructure company created when Hewlett-Packard separated in 2015. HPE sells servers, AI infrastructure, storage, networking, private and hybrid cloud technology, management software, financing, and support services. HP Inc., the separate company, retained PCs and printers.

For buyers and investors, the key distinction is that HPE is not a conventional hyperscale public-cloud provider. Its focus is customer-controlled infrastructure—on premises, in colocation facilities, at the edge, or delivered through HPE’s GreenLake consumption model.

What does HPE stand for?

HPE stands for Hewlett Packard Enterprise. The company is the enterprise-technology successor to the business Hewlett-Packard built around servers, data centers, networking, storage, software, and services.

In 2015, Hewlett-Packard separated into two public companies:

#1 Best Overall
HPE ProLiant DL360 G10 Gen 10 Server 2.30Ghz 36-Core 128GB RAM + 9.6TB Storage (Renewed)
  • Renewed server with the highest quality standards
  • Ideal for a robust enterprise environment or data center
  • All servers include power cords, and other parts detailed in full product description below
  • Custom configurations available upon request
  • HPE: servers, storage, networking, hybrid cloud, AI infrastructure, enterprise software, financing, and services.
  • HP Inc.: personal computers, printers, and related device products.

Older articles may call some HPE products “HP” because they predate the separation or use legacy branding. The modern HPE entity dates from 2015, although its enterprise business traces back to Hewlett-Packard’s founding in 1939. See HPE’s 2025 Form 10-K for the company’s current description and history.

What does HPE do today?

HPE describes its mission as providing edge-to-cloud technology for businesses and governments. Its portfolio covers the infrastructure underneath applications rather than the consumer devices people typically associate with “HP.”

HPE’s fiscal 2026 reporting has three segments, effective November 1, 2025: Cloud & AI, Networking, and Corporate Investments and Other. HPE combined its former Server, Hybrid Cloud, and Financial Services reporting into Cloud & AI, while some networking-related activities moved into Corporate Investments and Other. That means older financial coverage using the previous segment names is not directly comparable without checking the filing.

HPE products and services, organized by business need

Servers and compute

HPE ProLiant Compute covers general-purpose enterprise servers used for virtualization, databases, file services, and business applications. HPE also sells tower servers, rack systems, dense systems, high-performance computing platforms, and accelerated systems designed for AI workloads.

Management tools include HPE iLO and HPE Compute Ops Management. HPE also offers GreenLake Flex compute, which can provide a consumption-based alternative to buying all hardware outright. Product suitability and price depend heavily on the processor generation, memory, storage, GPU or other accelerator, operating system, support term, and subscription terms. “An HPE server” is not a single standardized product.

See HPE Compute, GreenLake Flex compute, and the HPE Store.

AI infrastructure

HPE supplies AI servers, accelerators, high-speed data-center networking, cooling, storage, and services for enterprise and sovereign-AI environments. It is primarily an infrastructure and services provider—not an AI-model company comparable to OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, or Microsoft.

  • P408i-a SR Gen10 2GB 12Gbps RAID
  • 4 Port 1GbE NIC - 2x 800W PSU

An AI purchase must account for GPU availability, power density, liquid or air cooling, network throughput, data pipelines, cluster management, software compatibility, and expected utilization. Buying an HPE AI server alone does not create a complete production AI platform.

Storage

HPE Alletra and related storage platforms serve block, file, object, backup, data-protection, analytics, and unstructured-data workloads. HPE is also moving toward cloud-native and software-defined storage, including storage delivered through GreenLake.

Storage should be selected by workload behavior rather than raw terabytes. Important questions include required latency and throughput, snapshot frequency, replication, ransomware recovery, capacity growth, file or object requirements, disaster-recovery targets, and cloud integration. Alletra platforms are not interchangeable simply because they all carry the HPE storage brand.

Networking

HPE’s networking business now includes two major portfolios:

  • HPE Aruba Networking: campus networking, wireless, switching, branch connectivity, SD-WAN, SASE, and cloud management, including Aruba Central.
  • HPE Juniper Networking: routing, switching, security, wireless, service-provider networks, data-center networking, and AI-assisted network operations inherited through Juniper Networks.

HPE completed its approximately $13.4 billion cash acquisition of Juniper on July 2, 2025. The deal substantially broadened HPE’s networking reach, but customers should not assume that Aruba and Juniper products already share one fully unified management plane, licensing structure, support process, or roadmap. Verify those details by product, SKU, geography, and contract.

Use the HPE Networking page and HPE Networking support resources for current product and support information.

These systems are intended for organizations that want cloud-style management and automation while retaining more control over hardware location, data, compliance, or performance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This differs from simply placing workloads in AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud. HPE can complement those hyperscalers, but it does not occupy the same role as a global public-cloud platform with broadly available managed services.

Software and management

HPE’s software portfolio includes:

  • HPE OneView for infrastructure management and provisioning.
  • Compute Ops Management for cloud-based compute operations.
  • Networking management, observability, and automation tools.
  • Storage-management software.
  • HPE Morpheus VM Essentials and related hybrid-cloud management capabilities.
  • HPE Ezmeral for selected data, analytics, and container-oriented use cases.

Software is not automatically included with every hardware purchase. Check the edition, license quantity, term, support entitlement, renewal price, and consumption model in the quote. Current offerings are listed in the HPE Software Store.

Services, support, and financing

HPE sells deployment, consulting, lifecycle, managed, professional, education, and multivendor services. Support options include HPE Tech Care and HPE Complete Care. HPE Financial Services can provide leasing, financing, and other lifecycle options.

Support may cover different combinations of parts, firmware, drivers, documentation, on-site response, monitoring, and third-party equipment. Confirm what is included rather than assuming that enterprise hardware automatically includes comprehensive support. HPE’s services page provides the current service categories.

What is HPE GreenLake?

HPE GreenLake is HPE’s platform for managing and consuming infrastructure and cloud services across on-premises, colocation, edge, and hybrid environments. It is both a technology platform and an operating and commercial model—not merely a financing plan and not automatically HPE’s public cloud.

Depending on the offering, customers may choose:

  • Pay-per-use consumption.
  • Subscription pricing.
  • Traditional purchase.
  • Reserved capacity or other committed arrangements.

“Pay per use” does not necessarily mean there is no commitment. Minimum bills, baseline capacity, reserved capacity, metering rules, support charges, financing costs, and termination obligations may apply. GreenLake is not automatically cheaper than AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud. The result depends on utilization, deployment location, capacity commitments, migration costs, operational labor, and included services.

What changed after HPE acquired Juniper?

The acquisition closed on July 2, 2025, at approximately $13.4 billion in cash consideration. HPE now has a broader networking portfolio spanning campus, branch, WAN, data center, routing, security, service-provider environments, and AI-oriented network operations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

HPE has described integration benefits and expected cost synergies, including at least $600 million by fiscal 2028 in a later 2026 filing. Those are management expectations, not realized results. Existing and prospective customers should check:

  • Whether a product remains under Aruba or Juniper branding.
  • Which management console and licensing model apply.
  • Which support portal handles the product.
  • Whether a roadmap or migration plan affects the deployment.
  • How partner, channel, and renewal arrangements will work.

Who buys HPE?

HPE serves small and midsize businesses, large enterprises, governments, public-sector organizations, telecommunications providers, financial institutions, healthcare organizations, universities, research institutions, AI and high-performance-computing operators, managed-service providers, and channel partners.

Its strongest fit is usually an organization that needs control over infrastructure, data locality, compliance, latency, performance, or integration with existing on-premises systems.

How does HPE make money?

HPE’s revenue comes from hardware sales, software licenses and subscriptions, GreenLake consumption, support and lifecycle services, financing and leasing through HPE Financial Services, and channel and partner sales.

HPE also reports annual recurring revenue (ARR), a company-defined metric that includes GreenLake cloud services, related financial-services revenue, software-as-a-service, consumption revenue, and other as-a-service offerings. HPE reported $3.2 billion of ARR in the quarter covered by its February 2026 filing, up 63% year over year. Juniper contributed significantly to networking-related growth. ARR is not the same as total revenue, cash flow, or profit; investors should read the company’s definitions and financial statements.

Is HPE a cloud company?

HPE is best described as a hybrid-cloud and infrastructure company, not a conventional hyperscale public-cloud provider. It supplies hardware and software that customers can run in their own facilities, colocation sites, or edge locations, with GreenLake adding cloud-like management and consumption choices.

A public-cloud-first organization seeking global elasticity and extensive managed services may prefer AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud. An organization needing customer-controlled infrastructure, data sovereignty, predictable performance, or private-cloud integration may find HPE more suitable.

Is HPE suitable for small businesses?

Sometimes. HPE can make sense for an SMB that needs a local server, predictable performance, professional support, expandable infrastructure, or enterprise-grade networking. It may be excessive for a business using only SaaS applications, lacking IT administration, or operating highly variable workloads that are more economical in public cloud.

The HPE Store lists some SMB-oriented products, but larger or more complex deployments commonly require a quote, reseller, service provider, or configuration process.

HPE pricing and total cost

HPE’s U.S. store displays starting prices for selected configurations. Prices checked August 16, 2026 included:

  • Aruba Central: starting at $20.00.
  • Aruba CX 6200: starting at $1,296.29.
  • Aruba CX 6400: starting at $12,666.53.
  • A listed HPE ProLiant AMD configuration: starting at $2,803.00.
  • Compute Ops Management: approximately $157.66–$160.11 depending on page and category.
  • HPE iLO Advanced: starting at $223.03.

These are starting prices in the U.S. store, not complete project costs. Configuration, currency, reseller discounts, taxes, software, optics, installation, support, rack space, power, cooling, migration, financing, and regional availability can materially change the total.

For a meaningful comparison, request a bill of materials and five-year total-cost estimate that separates hardware, licenses, support, deployment, financing, renewals, and expected consumption.

HPE compared with alternatives

Alternative Where it commonly differs
Dell Technologies Direct comparison for PowerEdge servers, storage, and infrastructure-consumption offerings.
Lenovo Infrastructure Solutions Server breadth, configuration flexibility, channel pricing, and existing Lenovo relationships.
Cisco Primarily a networking and security comparison, especially for buyers prioritizing Cisco’s ecosystem.
Nutanix Software-led hybrid and private cloud, often across selected hardware platforms.
AWS, Azure, Google Cloud Public-cloud elasticity, global reach, and managed services rather than customer-controlled hardware.
Pure Storage, NetApp, IBM Specialized storage, data management, and enterprise-infrastructure alternatives or complements.

No vendor is universally best. Compare deployment model, hardware breadth, networking depth, storage specialization, AI capability, management software, consumption economics, partner ecosystem, support, portability, and lock-in.

HPE buying checklist

  1. Define workload performance, availability, recovery, and security requirements.
  2. Estimate current capacity and growth for at least the contract term.
  3. Confirm processor, memory, storage, GPU, network, power, and cooling requirements.
  4. Identify every required license, subscription, support plan, and renewal.
  5. Check compatibility with VMware, Hyper-V, Linux, Kubernetes, backup, and security tools.
  6. For GreenLake, document minimums, metering, reserve capacity, overage rates, and exit terms.
  7. Verify product lifecycle, end-of-sale, firmware access, and support end dates.
  8. For networking, confirm whether Aruba and Juniper products use compatible management and support paths.
  9. Compare financing against outright purchase, including interest and residual obligations.
  10. Obtain a five-year total-cost estimate and a practical exit strategy.

Pros and cons of HPE

Potential advantages

  • Broad enterprise compute, storage, networking, and services portfolio.
  • Strong options for private, hybrid, edge, AI, and sovereign infrastructure.
  • Consumption and financing alternatives to an outright purchase.
  • Large support, services, and partner ecosystem.
  • Expanded networking breadth after the Juniper acquisition.

Potential disadvantages

  • Quote-based procurement can be complex.
  • Licensing, subscriptions, and support may be difficult to compare.
  • Juniper and Aruba integration may create product and roadmap uncertainty.
  • Infrastructure can be excessive for simple SaaS or small workloads.
  • Headline hardware prices exclude many ownership and operating costs.
  • GreenLake contracts may involve minimums, metering, or reserved capacity.

Bottom line

HPE is strongest for organizations that want supported, customer-controlled infrastructure across servers, storage, networking, AI, private cloud, and hybrid environments. It is less compelling when the priority is simple SaaS, maximum public-cloud elasticity, or the lowest possible commodity-hardware cost. The right decision depends less on the HPE brand than on workload requirements, utilization, lifecycle support, software terms, and the complete contract.
