WIRED’s April 2024 guide, “Our 23 Favorite Products Made From Recycled and Upcycled Materials”, names 23 favorites; the product details available here support 14 examples. Treat the figures below as claims reported in that 2024 article, not as independently audited or necessarily current specifications.
What “made from recycled materials” means
Recycled content is material recovered or diverted from the waste stream during manufacturing or after consumer use. Post-consumer recycled material is more specific: it has been used by a consumer, recovered, and made into something else. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency explains that buying products made with post-consumer recycled content helps “close the loop.” Its Quest for Less “Buying Recycled” fact sheet also distinguishes recycled-content products from products that are merely recyclable. A recyclable item does not necessarily contain recycled material.

How to judge a recycled-content claim before buying
Check the exact model and material
A brand may use recycled content in some products but not others. Match the claim to the specific model, size, or edition, and check which component contains the material. A percentage without a clear denominator can be hard to interpret; a bottle-equivalent figure does not tell you the product’s total recycled-content share.

Look for the source of the material
Post-consumer plastic, factory production scrap, and recovered ocean-bound material describe different inputs. “Recycled” alone does not tell you which one a product uses. If the distinction matters to you, look for a product-specific explanation rather than inferring it from a broad brand statement.
Consider the purchase in context
Recycled content is one attribute, not a complete measure of sustainability. The roundup does not provide lifecycle comparisons, independent certifications, or a verified environmental-impact ranking for these products. Function, expected useful life, repairability, and what happens to the item when you are done with it also matter. WIRED’s 2024 guide frames the choice modestly: recycled content can make sense when you already need a replacement, without making the product a perfect sustainability solution.
