Brighton & Hove Albion had the largest recorded net deficit in TransferNews’ season-assigned 2024/25 known-fee table: €230.5 million. Aston Villa had the largest recorded surplus, at €40.0 million. Those rankings come from a dataset that reports 28% fee coverage, so they are not definitive totals of every transfer obligation. Separately, the BBC’s summer-only table puts Premier League net spend at £520.3 million, using initial fees. The two tables cover different periods, use different currencies and apply different fee rules.

How to read net spend

Net spend compares what a club records as spending on player transfers with the income it records from player sales. In the full-season table below, the balance is income minus spending: a negative number is a deficit, and a positive number is a surplus. Other sources may instead show spending minus income, which reverses the signs.

Net spend is a transfer-fee measure, not a complete account of a club’s finances. It does not, by itself, establish squad quality, sporting success, financial health or compliance with profit and sustainability rules.

Full-season 2024/25 known-fee figures for all 20 clubs

TransferNews labels these figures as recorded Premier League spending, income and net balance for 2024/25. Its table includes 795 movements and reports 28% fee coverage. It counts sourced transfers marked confirmed or completed, keeps undisclosed movements separate rather than estimating their fees, and uses the canonical recorded euro fee. These are therefore known-fee database balances—not independently audited totals of every transfer cost or obligation.

Summer 2024 net spend in pounds

A separate BBC broadcast-journalist guidebook table covers the summer 2024 window only, in pounds, and records initial fees. It excludes potential add-ons, unreported fees, compensation that had yet to be decided and future transfers already agreed. The BBC guidebook reports £1.98bn spent, £1.46bn received and £520.3m net spend across the league. These figures should not be added to the season-assigned euro figures above or used to rank clubs against them: the periods, currencies and fee coverage differ.

The BBC 2024–25 Premier League guidebook says summer net spend was almost half the previous summer’s figure and that clubs recouped a record amount through sales. It interprets concern about possible profit and sustainability rule repercussions as a reason for tighter spending; that is the guidebook’s explanation, not proof of a single cause.

What January 2025 figures do—and do not—show

On 27 January 2025, with one week left before the window closed on 3 February, BBC Sport reported that Premier League clubs had spent £247m that month, citing FootballTransfers.com data. Manchester City accounted for about £125m at that point. BBC Sport said the total could rise, so £247m is an interim figure—not a final January total or a full-season amount. BBC Sport’s 27 January report provides that dated snapshot.

  • OFFICIAL PREMIER LEAGUE DESIGN: Licensed ball for the 25/26 season featuring a high-visibility graphic inspired by nights under the lights.
  • SEAMLESS FUSION CONSTRUCTION: No visible seams for superior durability, shape retention, and reduced water absorption.
  • TRUE FLIGHT PERFORMANCE: Equal-surface-area panel design keeps the ball round and ensures consistent rebound and accurate trajectory.
  • RESPONSIVE POWER: Foam layer provides lively rebound and striking force while maintaining a controlled, soft touch.
  • RELIABLE PERFORMANCE: Rubber bladder with PUMA Air Lock valve preserves air for consistent bounce, backed by FIFA Quality standards.

The same report gives historical context, not a final 2024/25 total: it says January 2023 spending was £815m, or 28.4% of that season’s transfer-fee outlay, and January 2024 spending was £96m, or 3.9%. Paul MacDonald of FootballTransfers.com attributed the 2024 slowdown in part to clubs being aware of emerging PSR restrictions and retaining spending power for the summer. Those quoted figures and interpretation are about earlier windows.

Why published net-spend rankings differ

A meaningful comparison needs the same measurement on each side. Check the transfer period, currency, gross expenditure, sale income and balance, then check what the source counts: initial fees or later add-ons, disclosed or undisclosed fees, loans, and deals agreed now for future completion. The full-season euro table and summer-only pound table answer different questions, so neither should be treated as a correction of the other.

The BBC guidebook’s summer transfer summary supplies a league-wide summer total under its initial-fee method. TransferNews’ table methodology explains its known-fee balance convention and exclusions. No cited source here establishes a complete, harmonized, audited final-season fee total for all 20 clubs.
