Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Short answer: European consumer groups pressured Microsoft to remove conditions attached to consumer Extended Security Updates (ESU) for eligible personal Windows 10 devices in the European Economic Area (EEA). That does not mean Microsoft restored normal Windows 10 support. Windows 10 reached the end of ordinary support on October 14, 2025, while current Microsoft documentation says enrolled consumer devices can receive limited security protection through October 12, 2027.
The result is best understood as a consumer-advocacy victory—not a confirmed EU court order forcing Microsoft to keep Windows 10 fully supported.

What Europe actually changed
Microsoft planned to end ordinary Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. After that date, the operating system would no longer receive regular feature updates, product improvements, general technical support or ordinary security updates.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMicrosoft offered consumers a temporary ESU program instead. Its original consumer model included different enrollment routes depending on the market, including using a Microsoft account, making a one-time payment or redeeming Microsoft Rewards points. European consumer organizations objected particularly to linking security protection with Microsoft services such as cloud backup, while many otherwise functional PCs were excluded from the official Windows 11 upgrade path.

Euroconsumers and affiliated national organizations, including Spain’s OCU, campaigned for a less restrictive arrangement. In September 2025, they announced that Microsoft would provide an additional no-cost ESU enrollment option for personal users in the EEA without requiring them to enable Windows Backup or pay with Microsoft Rewards points.
That announcement did not reverse Windows 10’s end-of-support decision. It changed the transition available to eligible EEA consumers.
Euroconsumers’ announcement described the original European arrangement as lasting for one year, through October 2026. Microsoft’s current support documentation now says consumer ESU coverage can continue through October 12, 2027 for enrolled devices. Those are two stages of the story: the 2025 campaign commitment and Microsoft’s later, broader consumer ESU timetable.

Did the EU legally force Microsoft?
That wording is too absolute based on the available evidence.
The documented record supports this description: European consumer organizations pressured Microsoft into removing conditions from no-cost consumer security coverage in the EEA. Euroconsumers presented the outcome as a campaign success, supported by concerns about consumer rights, digital products and the environmental consequences of forcing people to replace working computers.
There is no verified final court judgment or publicly documented binding EU enforcement order in the supplied record requiring Microsoft to provide the updates. The legal questions were serious, but they should not be confused with an adjudicated finding that Microsoft had violated European law.

Consumer groups pointed to European rules concerning products with digital elements and the importance of providing software updates needed to keep such products in conformity. They also raised questions about whether tying security updates to use of a Microsoft account or backup service could limit consumer choice or create digital-market concerns. Those were arguments and regulatory questions—not proof of a final ruling.
For that reason, “Europe forced Microsoft into free extended support” is a useful headline shorthand only if it is immediately qualified. Technically, the more accurate description is free consumer Extended Security Updates for eligible EEA devices.
Windows 10 support timeline
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| October 14, 2025 | Ordinary Windows 10 support ended. |
| October 15, 2025 onward | Eligible consumers needed ESU for continued operating-system security updates. |
| October 13, 2026 | The original one-year European consumer arrangement was described as ending on this date. |
| October 12, 2027 | Microsoft’s current support documentation says consumer ESU coverage can continue through this date for enrolled devices. |
The current Microsoft page should control for present enrollment and expiry information. Users should not assume that an announcement made in 2025 describes every condition still in effect in 2026.
What Extended Security Updates include
ESU is a limited security bridge. Microsoft describes it as providing critical and important security updates for eligible Windows 10 version 22H2 devices.
| Item | Ordinary Windows 10 support | Consumer ESU |
|---|---|---|
| Security updates | Yes, before October 14, 2025 | Limited critical and important updates |
| Feature updates | Available during the supported lifecycle | No |
| New product features | Not after ordinary support ends | No |
| General technical support | Available during the supported lifecycle | No |
| Security coverage after end of support | Not applicable | Yes, if eligible and enrolled |
| Current documented duration | Ended October 14, 2025 | Through October 12, 2027 |
ESU does not turn Windows 10 back into a normally supported operating system. It does not add features, improve performance, provide general troubleshooting or guarantee that every future Windows-related problem will be fixed.
Microsoft 365 Apps are a separate issue. Microsoft’s support materials say security updates for Microsoft 365 Apps on Windows 10 may continue until October 10, 2028. That does not mean the Windows 10 operating system itself remains fully supported.

Who qualifies?
EEA consumers, not every European computer
The relevant geography is the European Economic Area: the EU member states plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway. The arrangement should not automatically be extended to the United Kingdom or every other European country.
It concerns consumer or personal devices. A business, school, government department or other organization cannot assume that the consumer offer applies to its managed computers. Organizations may have separate commercial licensing and ESU arrangements.
Eligible Windows 10 hardware and software
The device generally needs to be running a supported Windows 10 release, principally version 22H2, and must satisfy Microsoft’s current enrollment conditions. Enrollment is still required; a computer does not become protected merely because it is physically located in the EEA.

Microsoft’s current regional information is the best source for the options available in a particular country and edition: Microsoft’s Windows 10 ESU page.
How to check and enroll
- Confirm the operating system. Open Settings > System > About, or press
Windows key + R, enterwinverand select OK. Confirm that the device is running Windows 10 version 22H2. - Check Windows 11 eligibility. Use Windows Update or Microsoft’s PC Health Check to see whether the existing computer can receive the official Windows 11 upgrade.
- Install pending Windows 10 updates. An outdated installation may not display the relevant ESU enrollment component.
- Open Windows Update. Look for the ESU enrollment prompt or option. Microsoft has used different labels and rollout stages, so the exact screen may vary by country, edition, region and enrollment state.
- Follow Microsoft’s current instructions. The available no-cost EEA route and account requirements should be confirmed on Microsoft’s regional page rather than assumed from older articles.
- Verify enrollment. Do not assume protection is active until Windows or Microsoft confirms that the device has been enrolled.
- Keep installing updates normally. ESU is not a substitute for regular update maintenance.
Microsoft’s current end-of-support guidance is available at its Windows 10 support page.
If the ESU option does not appear
Missing enrollment controls do not necessarily mean that the European offer has disappeared. Common explanations include:

- The edition or device does not qualify for the consumer program.
- The relevant Windows Update component has not reached the device yet.
- The user is confusing Microsoft 365 application support with Windows operating-system support.
First, install all pending Windows updates, confirm the exact version using Settings > System > About or winver, and check Windows Update again. If the device is managed by an employer or school, contact the organization’s IT or Microsoft licensing administrator.
Use Microsoft’s official support pages. Avoid unofficial registry modifications, activation scripts and websites promising “free ESU” through unsupported methods. The supplied evidence does not establish a universal command or registry workaround that should be recommended.

Stay on Windows 10 with ESU
This is reasonable for a working PC that cannot officially run Windows 11, or for a household that needs time to migrate data and applications. It provides a temporary security bridge, but not a permanent future for the machine.
Upgrade the existing PC to Windows 11
If the computer meets Microsoft’s official requirements, Windows 11 is the mainstream supported path. Check compatibility before starting. Installing Windows 11 on unsupported hardware may create update, stability, security and support risks, even if the installation succeeds.
Replace the computer
A replacement is more defensible when the current machine fails Windows 11 requirements because of an old processor, missing TPM 2.0, insufficient memory or unsupported firmware—and when the user needs several more years of supported Windows use. ESU can provide time to budget and migrate rather than forcing an immediate purchase.
Move to Linux
Linux distributions such as Ubuntu or Linux Mint may extend the life of an otherwise capable PC without buying new Windows hardware. This is most suitable for users whose applications, games and peripherals work on Linux and who are comfortable learning a different administration model. Windows-only business software and specialist hardware may make migration impractical.

Continue using unsupported Windows 10
This is the weakest option for an internet-connected computer. The PC will continue to start and run, but after ordinary support ends it is more exposed to malware and other security risks. If ESU is unavailable, consider upgrading, replacing the machine or changing operating systems rather than treating continued operation as continued security.
Why consumer organizations challenged Microsoft
The campaign combined several concerns:
- Consumer choice: A user could face a choice between paying, using Microsoft Rewards points or engaging with Microsoft services to retain security protection.
- Hardware exclusion: Windows 11’s requirements leave some otherwise functional PCs without an official upgrade path.
- Electronic waste: Replacing working computers earlier than necessary creates financial and environmental costs.
- Digital-product obligations: Consumer groups argued that necessary software updates are relevant to the legal conformity of products with digital elements.
- Digital-market questions: They questioned whether conditioning security updates on use of Microsoft services could restrict consumer choice.
These concerns explain why the campaign gained attention. They do not establish that a court or EU regulator has finally ruled that Microsoft’s original conditions were unlawful.
Frequently asked questions
Does Windows 10 stop working after October 14, 2025?
No. The operating system continues to run, but ordinary support ended. Without ESU, it no longer receives the same security protection and support available during its supported lifecycle.

No. The no-additional-cost arrangement described here concerns eligible personal devices in the EEA. Enrollment rules and pricing can differ elsewhere.
Does the offer apply to businesses?
Not automatically. The European arrangement concerns consumers and personal devices. Businesses, schools and public bodies should check their own Microsoft licensing and IT arrangements.
Does ESU include feature updates?
No. It provides defined critical and important security updates, not new Windows 10 features, product enhancements or general technical support.
Is the United Kingdom included?
The documented scope is the EEA. The United Kingdom is not part of the EEA, so UK users should check Microsoft’s UK-specific information rather than assume the EEA offer applies.
Recommended Free Tools
Can an unsupported Windows 11 installation solve the problem?
It may install on some hardware, but unsupported installations can carry update, stability, security and support risks. An officially compatible Windows 11 upgrade, ESU, replacement computer or suitable Linux distribution is a safer decision framework.
What happens after October 12, 2027?
Microsoft’s current documentation identifies that date as the consumer ESU endpoint. Users should plan a supported migration before then. Microsoft could publish further policy changes, but no indefinite Windows 10 extension should be assumed.
