Short answer: BYD sold more battery-electric passenger vehicles globally than Tesla in 2025, but that does not mean BYD has a normal U.S. passenger-car business. BYD reported 2,256,714 battery-electric vehicle sales, compared with Tesla’s approximately 1.636 million deliveries. BYD’s larger headline total—4,602,436 “new-energy vehicles”—also includes 2,288,709 plug-in hybrids.
In the United States, BYD has commercial operations involving buses, trucks, forklifts and related facilities. What American consumers generally cannot do is walk into a BYD retail channel and buy a passenger car such as a Dolphin, Seal or Atto 3.

“Bigger than Tesla” means units, not everything
The claim that BYD is bigger than Tesla is accurate only when “bigger” means global vehicle volume. It does not automatically mean higher revenue, profit, market value, brand strength, software capability or U.S. sales.
| 2025 metric | BYD | Tesla | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Battery-electric vehicles | 2,256,714 | Approximately 1,636,000 deliveries | The cleanest vehicle-volume comparison |
| Plug-in hybrids | 2,288,709 | Not applicable | BYD-only category in this comparison |
| BYD total new-energy vehicles | 4,602,436 | Not comparable | Includes battery-electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids |
| U.S. mainstream passenger-car retail sales | No normal retail channel identified | Established direct-ordering channel | The source of the apparent contradiction |
BYD’s official 2025 sales announcement provides the BEV, plug-in-hybrid and total figures. The Associated Press reported Tesla’s approximately 1.64 million 2025 deliveries based on Tesla’s reported results.

So the most defensible wording is: BYD surpassed Tesla in global battery-electric vehicle volume in 2025. Saying BYD sold 4.6 million electric cars against Tesla’s 1.6 million would blur an important distinction, because nearly half of BYD’s total consisted of plug-in hybrids.
BYD’s product mix is much broader than Tesla’s
BYD is not simply a Tesla equivalent with a larger factory. Its global lineup includes inexpensive city cars, compact hatchbacks, sedans, SUVs, luxury vehicles, plug-in hybrids and commercial vehicles.
The plug-in-hybrid business is especially important. In 2025, BYD sold slightly more plug-in hybrids than battery-electric vehicles. A plug-in hybrid can appeal to buyers who want electric driving but still face limited charging access, long-distance travel requirements or weak local charging infrastructure.

It also means BYD’s global volume cannot be used as a direct forecast of how many cars it would sell in the United States, where its current passenger-car lineup is not generally available.
Why BYD has so much global volume
BYD’s scale is strongly connected to China, the world’s largest electric-car market. China’s enormous domestic market supports high production volumes, intense competition and a wide range of lower-priced models. BYD has also expanded into Europe, Latin America, Asia-Pacific, the Middle East and other regions. The company says its new-energy vehicles were present in more than 100 countries and regions by 2025.
The International Energy Agency’s Global EV Outlook 2026 says China accounted for more than half of the global increase in electric-car sales in 2025. The IEA also notes that lower-cost electric vehicles remain much less available in the United States than in China.
Several structural advantages help explain BYD’s international pricing and volume:

- Price coverage: BYD sells products below the price ranges where Tesla is most concentrated.
- Powertrain choice: Buyers can choose BEVs or plug-in hybrids.
- Component integration: BYD has substantial battery and vehicle-component capabilities.
- Domestic competition: Fierce competition in China has pushed automakers to improve features and pricing.
The IEA reports that nearly 70% of BEVs sold in China in 2025 were cheaper than comparable internal-combustion vehicles before incentives, while the affordability advantage is much smaller in the United States. That does not mean a Chinese BYD sticker price would transfer unchanged to America. Shipping, tariffs, certification, distribution, warranty and service costs would all alter the calculation.

BYD is not absent from the United States
The statement “you cannot buy a BYD in America” is too broad. BYD has a U.S. commercial presence, including electric buses, trucks, forklifts, manufacturing activity and service operations.
According to BYD’s U.S. materials, the company has invested more than $250 million in American facilities, equipment and workers. Its Lancaster, California operation has focused on electric buses and trucks.
Those products are generally sold to transit agencies, fleet operators and other institutional customers—not through a conventional consumer passenger-car network. A more accurate statement is:
You generally cannot buy a BYD passenger car through a normal U.S. retail channel.
That is different from saying no BYD vehicle operates in the country or that BYD has no American facilities.
The barrier is a stack of problems, not just one tariff
BYD’s lack of a mainstream U.S. passenger-car business is best understood as a combination of trade costs, regulatory scrutiny, infrastructure requirements and business risk.
1. Import costs can erase a low-price advantage
Chinese-built electric vehicles face substantial U.S. trade barriers. Historical coverage cited a combined tariff of 27.5%, while later reporting described a 100% tariff imposed on Chinese electric vehicles in 2024. Those figures refer to different policy moments and should not be treated as a single timeless rate. The applicable duty depends on the vehicle, classification and rules in effect at the time of import.

Whatever the precise current calculation for a particular vehicle, tariffs can materially change the economics. A low-cost model that is attractive in China may become far less competitive after import duties, ocean freight, port handling, compliance work, distribution costs and warranty reserves.

Tesla drivers can charge too, using the J1772 adapter that comes with the car.
- PLUG IN, NO HARDWIRING: Level 2 charger delivers up to 40A to fully charge most EVs overnight. Plugs into a 240V, 4-prong NEMA 14-50 outlet (the RV/range type - NOT a dryer outlet) on a dedicated 50A circuit. The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that you have the right outlet.
- CONTROL & SAVE FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start/stop charging, set speed (6-40A), get reminders, and track energy use and cost. Schedule off-peak overnight charging to cut your electric bill. Requires 2.4 GHz WiFi.
- SAFETY-CERTIFIED & WEATHERPROOF: Independently tested and certified (UL, ETL, FCC, Energy Star). A fully sealed IP66 / NEMA 4 housing stands up to rain, snow, heat and dust indoors or out, and internal steel shielding protects the electronics for years of reliable use.
- GLOW-IN-THE-DARK HOLSTER: The included high-visibility holster glows in the dark so you can find and dock the plug easily at night. Holds the connector securely when not in use.
Tariffs are therefore an important obstacle, but they do not by themselves prove that a BYD passenger car is legally impossible to sell. They make the business case harder.
2. A foreign-market car must meet U.S. requirements
A vehicle designed for another market may need changes to satisfy U.S. safety, labeling, lighting, emissions and software requirements. The manufacturer must also handle certification, recalls and continuing compliance.
Connected vehicles add another layer of scrutiny. U.S. policymakers have examined risks involving connected-vehicle software and hardware, data handling, communications equipment, foreign ownership or control and cybersecurity. The policy environment makes a Chinese-connected passenger vehicle unusually difficult and politically sensitive to introduce.
That does not justify calling BYD passenger cars categorically “banned” unless a current U.S. government rule explicitly establishes such a ban. The more accurate conclusion is that market entry faces unusually high legal, technical and political hurdles.
3. Selling cars requires a complete ownership system
Shipping cars to American ports is only the beginning. A viable passenger-car business would need:
- Federal certification and import compliance
- State-by-state sales authorization where required
- Retail or direct-sales infrastructure
- Parts warehouses and logistics
- Trained repair technicians
- Recall administration
- Warranty claims processing
- Financing and insurance relationships
- Customer support and roadside assistance
BYD’s U.S. commercial operations do not automatically provide the network needed to support millions of consumer cars. A bus or fleet customer can operate under a very different procurement, service and financing model from an ordinary household buying a passenger vehicle.
4. BYD must decide whether the U.S. risk is worth it
The United States is not simply an empty market waiting for any inexpensive EV. Entering would expose BYD to regulatory expense, political scrutiny, litigation risk, capital requirements and the difficulty of building trust and service coverage from scratch.

Could a privately imported BYD be driven in America?
A U.S. reader may encounter foreign-market BYD cars through gray-market listings, private imports or vehicles relocated from another country. That does not make ownership straightforward.
A privately imported vehicle may face federal safety, emissions, customs, title, insurance and state-registration issues. It may not have U.S. warranty coverage, compatible software, accessible replacement parts or technicians familiar with the model. Registration rules can also vary by state.
Be especially cautious of an online seller claiming to offer a “U.S.-spec” BYD passenger car unless the seller can be linked to BYD or a verifiable licensed importer. A foreign-market list price is not a U.S. landed price, and an overseas warranty is not necessarily enforceable in America.
For most consumers, importing one is not a practical substitute for an authorized U.S. retail channel. The real ownership risk is not only whether the car can cross the border; it is whether the owner can legally register, insure, repair and support it over time.
What American buyers are missing
The most significant consequence of BYD’s absence is limited access to the low-cost end of the global EV market. The BYD models most relevant to American shoppers would include:
- Small city cars and hatchbacks
- Affordable compact SUVs
- Mainstream electric sedans
- Plug-in hybrids with long combined range
- Lower-cost fleet vehicles
This does not mean every BYD model would be better than every Tesla. It means BYD’s global portfolio reaches further down-market and covers more powertrain and body-style choices.
For an American shopper, that distinction matters. Tesla has an established U.S. ordering, delivery, service and charging ecosystem, but its lineup is not a direct substitute for every inexpensive BYD sold overseas. A U.S. consumer may therefore face fewer affordable EV choices than a buyer in China or another BYD market.

Does BYD’s volume lead mean Tesla is finished?
No. BYD’s 2025 unit lead is meaningful, but unit volume is only one measure of business performance. It does not settle questions about profitability, margins, quality, software, autonomy, charging access, reliability, safety or long-term financial strength.

The IEA has noted that Tesla’s global share has fallen as BYD and other manufacturers have expanded. That describes competitive momentum, not a complete ranking of the two companies.
Tesla also has a major practical advantage for American consumers: an established direct-ordering system, existing vehicles and service operations, and a mature Supercharger network. Tesla’s ordering guidance directs buyers to order online and check existing inventory, with delivery timing varying by model, location and availability.
What this means for U.S. EV competition
The core issue is not whether BYD makes vehicles capable of selling in other markets. Its global numbers demonstrate that the company has achieved substantial scale. The issue is whether U.S. policy and market conditions will allow American consumers to access the same range of low-cost products.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Keeping Chinese passenger cars out—or making them prohibitively expensive to import—can protect domestic manufacturers from a powerful competitor. It can also limit price pressure and reduce the number of inexpensive EV choices available to consumers. The trade-off involves industrial policy, national-security concerns, supply-chain control, consumer prices and the speed of vehicle electrification.
Local production could theoretically reduce some import exposure, but it would not automatically resolve certification, ownership, connected-vehicle, data, software or political concerns. It would also require major capital investment and a durable strategy for serving the U.S. market.
Bottom line
BYD did surpass Tesla in 2025 global battery-electric vehicle volume: 2.257 million BYD BEVs versus approximately 1.636 million Tesla deliveries. BYD’s much larger 4.602 million new-energy-vehicle total includes 2.289 million plug-in hybrids, so it should not be presented as a simple battery-electric comparison.
BYD is active in the United States through commercial vehicles and related operations, but ordinary consumers generally cannot buy a BYD passenger car through a normal American retail channel. Tariffs, regulatory and national-security scrutiny, certification requirements, and the lack of a passenger-car sales and service network all contribute to that gap.
The headline is therefore not contradictory. BYD can be a global volume leader while remaining largely unavailable to U.S. car shoppers.
