Google completed the purchase on March 11. The decision cleared a major regulatory obstacle, but it did not settle every question about future competition, customer choice, or how the combined business will operate.
What Google bought—and when
Alphabet announced the proposed acquisition on March 18, 2025. The named buyer was Google LLC, controlled by Alphabet; Wiz Inc. was the target. Google said the all-cash consideration was $32 billion, subject to closing adjustments, and planned to place Wiz within Google Cloud. Google’s announcement described the deal as an investment in cloud security and multicloud adoption.
Wiz sells cloud-security software designed to help organizations identify and manage risk across cloud environments. That cross-cloud scope matters: companies may use Google Cloud alongside Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, Oracle Cloud, or on-premises systems. Google’s strategic rationale was to expand its security capabilities, including for cloud-native applications and AI workloads. Those are the company’s stated aims, not guaranteed outcomes for customers.

Why the EU reviewed the acquisition
Merger control asks whether combining two businesses is likely to harm competition. It is different from an investigation into whether a company abused a dominant position, and it is separate from obligations under the Digital Markets Act (DMA), which apply to designated gatekeepers. The Commission’s review did not amount to a finding that Google had violated antitrust law.

The deal was referred to the Commission under Article 4(5), even though it did not initially meet the ordinary EU turnover thresholds. The public notification records receipt on January 6, 2026, and says the Commission’s preliminary examination found the transaction could fall within the Merger Regulation while reserving its final jurisdictional decision. The EU notification identifies Google LLC as the buyer and Wiz Inc. as a Delaware corporation headquartered in New York.
Once the Commission took up the case, it could clear the acquisition, require remedies, or open a more extensive Phase II investigation. The deadline reported for the initial decision was February 10, 2026; the Commission cleared the deal on that date. Reuters reporting on the expected deadline and coverage of the outcome document those dates.
What competition risks were at issue
Bundling and distribution
A cloud provider that owns a security product could potentially bundle it with infrastructure services, offer preferential pricing, or use its sales channels to steer customers toward it. The concern is not limited to whether a product technically works elsewhere: pricing, packaging, marketplace placement, and sales incentives can affect whether rivals have a fair chance to compete.

- Three Wi-Fi routers provide up to 6600 square feet of fast, reliable Wi-Fi[2]; and you can customize your setup to create a mesh Wi-Fi system for the coverage you need
- Nest Wifi Pro uses the latest, most advanced Wi-Fi 6E technology[3], so it isn’t compatible with previous generations of Google Wifi or Nest Wifi
- Nest Wifi Pro automatically adjusts your Wi-Fi network’s performance and activity; it prioritizes video calls and helps websites load quickly
- It has built-in technology to make sure your connection is strong and consistent, even at the edge of your Wi-Fi network’s coverage[2]
Multicloud interoperability and customer choice
Wiz’s cross-cloud model makes it useful to organizations that want a view of security risks across multiple providers. Regulators therefore had to consider whether Google might use that platform to encourage customers to move workloads to Google Cloud, or make Wiz less attractive outside Google’s own infrastructure. In practice, a customer may have the legal and technical ability to switch cloud providers while still facing substantial migration costs, contract constraints, or staffing demands.
Access to security data
Security tools can process information about an organization’s systems and vulnerabilities. A concern was whether Google could gain an advantage over rival cloud or security vendors through data available to Wiz. Reuters reported that the Commission concluded the relevant data was not commercially sensitive in a way that created a decisive advantage and could also be assessed by other security-software companies. Reuters’ report on the approval describes that reasoning.
Cloud infrastructure competition
The Commission’s assessment, as reported, treated AWS and Microsoft as significant alternatives to Google Cloud and concluded that customers retained the ability to switch providers. That conclusion supported approval, but it does not mean switching is frictionless for every enterprise. Data architecture, identity systems, regulatory requirements, contracts, and employee expertise can all make a move costly.

Why the Commission approved the deal
The Commission concluded that the transaction did not raise competition concerns requiring intervention. The reported basis included the continued presence of AWS and Microsoft as major cloud alternatives, customers’ ability to switch, and the conclusion that Wiz-related data would not give Google a decisive commercially sensitive advantage. The approval was unconditional: the Commission did not require divestitures or behavioral commitments as a condition of EU clearance. The approval report summarizes the outcome.
That is a finding about the merger review and the evidence considered in it, not a guarantee that prices will fall, that products will improve, or that future conduct cannot be examined. Regulators can assess later business practices separately under competition law or other applicable rules.

What changed after closing
Google completed the acquisition on March 11, 2026. Wiz joined Google Cloud and retained its brand. Google said Wiz products would continue to support major cloud platforms, including Google Cloud, AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Oracle Cloud. Google’s completion announcement describes the post-closing arrangement.

- The product is refurbished, is fully functional and in excellent condition. Backed by the 90-day Amazon Renewed Guarantee.
Google has positioned the combined business around security across code, cloud, runtime environments, and AI systems. The acquisition’s practical effect will depend on how products, pricing, data practices, and sales incentives evolve; the EU decision itself does not establish what those choices will be.

For security and procurement teams, the important question is not only whether Wiz supports multiple clouds today, but whether that remains commercially and operationally useful as the product develops. Review contracts and product terms rather than relying on a general interoperability statement.
- Confirm which cloud environments, identity systems, SIEM tools, ticketing systems, and other integrations are supported for the specific products you use.
- Review renewal, repricing, bundling, and marketplace-purchase terms, including whether existing contracts protect against unwanted changes.
- Ask how security telemetry and customer data are used, retained, accessed, and separated across Google Cloud and other services.
- Compare direct-purchase and marketplace terms, and document how pricing or functionality differs across cloud providers.
- Maintain an exit plan that covers data export, configuration portability, replacement tooling, and the time needed to migrate.
These checks matter even when a vendor offers multicloud support: technical compatibility does not by itself guarantee neutral pricing, equal functionality, or low switching costs.

What EU approval does not establish
The Commission’s decision allowed the acquisition to proceed in the EU merger review. It was not, by itself, proof that every regulator worldwide had cleared the deal, nor did it resolve all possible future questions about Google’s conduct. Likewise, a finding that the deal did not require remedies is not a finding that bundling or data advantages are impossible; it means the Commission did not find grounds to intervene in this merger review.
The transaction has now moved from proposal to ownership. Its longer-term significance will turn on whether Google can integrate Wiz while preserving the cross-cloud usefulness that helped make the company strategically valuable—and whether customers continue to have meaningful choices in a market where changing providers can be difficult.
