Ethereum’s Glamsterdam Test Gets a Last-Minute Prysm Fix Before a Capacity Jump

Prysm v7.2.1 added the Sepolia gas-limit schedule ahead of Glamsterdam, but the 200-million setting is for a testnet—not an announced Ethereum mainnet limit.

Prysm v7.2.1 added a Sepolia gas-limit schedule just before the network’s scheduled Glamsterdam test activation, changing the client’s default from 60 million to 200 million gas at the Gloas fork. The update corrected a client configuration gap; it does not show that the test achieved its target, or that Ethereum mainnet has adopted a 200-million gas limit.

What Prysm changed

Prysm v7.2.0 included support for Sepolia’s scheduled Gloas fork, but its release notes say it missed a gas-limit schedule added to the upstream configuration after that version was cut. Without an operator-specified value, validators running v7.2.0 would therefore continue with a 60-million gas limit after the fork.

Prysm v7.2.1, dated October 5, added the Sepolia schedule. From the Gloas fork, validators using that version default to a 200-million gas limit. Operators can still set a different value in proposer settings, through the keymanager API, or with the --suggested-gas-limit option. Prysm v7.2.1 release notes

Prysm version Sepolia fork support and default
v7.2.0 Supported the scheduled fork, but did not include the Sepolia gas-limit schedule; absent another operator configuration, the default after the fork was 60 million gas. Prysm v7.2.0 release notes
v7.2.1 Added a schedule that defaults to 200 million gas from the Sepolia Gloas fork; operators can configure another value. Prysm v7.2.1 release notes

This comparison describes Prysm’s documented behavior only. It does not establish the defaults or configuration of other Ethereum clients.

Why the timing mattered for the capacity test

The Ethereum Foundation scheduled Glamsterdam activation on Sepolia for epoch 353,024, slot 11,296,768—2026-10-06 at 13:53:36 UTC. The test was intended to exercise a 200-million gas limit rather than Sepolia’s prior 60 million. If validators stayed on Prysm’s lower default, their proposed blocks would not exercise the intended higher capacity. The client update therefore aligned Prysm’s default with the test configuration. Ethereum Foundation’s Glamsterdam testnet announcement Prysm v7.2.1 release notes

The published schedule and release notes establish what was planned and how Prysm’s software behaved. They do not establish whether Sepolia’s post-activation blocks reached the target or whether the test passed. No measured post-activation gas outcome is provided in those sources.

What Glamsterdam is designed to test

Glamsterdam combines the Amsterdam execution-layer upgrade with the Gloas consensus-layer upgrade. The Ethereum Foundation highlights enshrined proposer-builder separation (ePBS) and block-level access lists (BALs) as changes intended to support more execution capacity while keeping block validation practical. BALs let clients use information about state access to parallelize state reads and transaction validation. Ethereum Foundation’s Glamsterdam testnet announcement

The upgrade also changes gas accounting. The Foundation describes EIP-8037 as increasing and separately metering state-creation costs, and EIP-8038 as changing state-access costs. These repricings are intended to better reflect resource use and help support higher gas limits while managing state growth. A larger gas limit is a capacity setting, not a claim that every transaction will cost less or that blocks will always use the full allowance.

Does 200 million gas apply to Ethereum mainnet?

No. The 200-million figure in this change is a Sepolia testnet setting tied to its scheduled Gloas fork. In its September 28 announcement, the Ethereum Foundation said activation dates for Hoodi and mainnet had not yet been decided. The announcement does not set a mainnet gas limit or activation date, so the Sepolia configuration should not be treated as a settled mainnet policy. What validators and developers should check

Validator operators

  • Check the installed client version and the applicable release notes. Fork support and the gas-limit value a client proposes are separate configuration questions.
  • If using Prysm, verify whether the 200-million Sepolia schedule is active for the intended fork and whether a proposer setting, keymanager API value, or --suggested-gas-limit override supplies a different limit.
  • Do not assume another client shares Prysm’s version-specific defaults; consult that client’s own release notes and configuration.

Smart-contract developers

The Foundation’s repricing guidance identifies potential issues for code that depends on fixed gas assumptions, including fixed gas stipends, hardcoded gas values, branches based on gasleft(), and presigned transactions with fixed gas limits. Test gas-sensitive paths under the revised rules rather than assuming old estimates remain suitable. Its replay guidance says “the large majority of transactions” had no change, without giving a percentage; that does not guarantee a particular contract or transaction is unaffected. Review gas estimation logic and cached gas constants. The Foundation warns that older constants may underestimate gas under the new schedule, which can affect estimates and transactions that rely on preset limits. Ethereum Foundation’s repricing impact guidance for smart-contract developers
