Ethereum gas fees are transaction costs paid in ETH for the computation a transaction uses. The amount depends on both how much gas the transaction consumes and the per-gas price at the time it is included; there is no fixed Ethereum fee. Check a current estimate before sending, and compare the specific transaction and network if you are considering a Layer 2.
What Ethereum gas fees pay for
Gas measures the computational work required to process an operation on Ethereum. It is a unit, not a currency. The fee is paid in ETH, and interfaces commonly display the per-gas price in gwei. One gwei equals 0.000000001 ETH. Gas also limits how much computation a transaction can consume, helping prevent spam and unbounded execution. Ethereum.org’s gas documentation explains the mechanics.
A simple ETH transfer uses less computation than many smart-contract interactions. Contract calls can require more gas because they perform more operations. As a result, two transactions sent at the same gas price can still have different fees.
How the fee is calculated
For a typical type 2 transaction under EIP-1559, the practical calculation is gas used multiplied by the applicable per-gas price, subject to the sender’s max-fee cap. The main parts are:

- Gas used: The computation the transaction actually consumes.
- Base fee: A protocol-set amount per gas that changes with block demand. The base fee is burned rather than paid to the validator. EIP-1559 specifies that “The base fee per gas is burned.”
- Priority fee: The tip offered to encourage a validator to include the transaction.
- Max fee per gas: The sender’s ceiling for the base fee plus tip. If the transaction is included below that ceiling, the unused amount is not charged.
In Ethereum.org’s explanatory example, a 21,000-gas transfer at a 10 gwei base fee plus a 2 gwei tip costs 252,000 gwei, or 0.000252 ETH. This illustrates the calculation; it is not a current quote.
Why Ethereum fees change
The base fee adjusts according to how much gas the previous block used relative to its target. When a block is above target, the base fee rises; when it is below target, the base fee falls. Priority fees can also vary as users compete for timely inclusion. These moving parts mean a gas-price reading can become stale quickly.

The ETH-denominated fee is not the same as its dollar value: the dollar amount also changes with ETH’s exchange price. A complex contract interaction may cost more than a standard transfer because it uses more gas, even when the per-gas price is the same.
Historical readings should not be mistaken for a current rate. Ethereum.org reported Etherscan readings of around 0.15 gwei for standard gas on May 5, 2026, and daily averages near 0.5 gwei through April 2026; the observation was published May 7, 2026. Those figures describe that period, not fees on October 8, 2026. Ethereum.org’s scaling material is not a live fee quote.

Gas used, gas limit, and failed transactions
Gas used is the computation a transaction actually consumes. The gas limit is the maximum computation budget the sender permits. Ethereum.org’s gas documentation gives 21,000 gas units as the requirement for a standard ETH transfer; this is a gas amount, not an ETH or dollar fee. If the limit is higher than needed, unused gas is returned.
If a limit is too low for validation, the transaction is rejected before inclusion and consumes no gas. If execution begins but runs out of gas, the transaction’s state changes revert while the gas supplied is consumed. As Ethereum.org puts it, “The fee is paid regardless of whether a transaction succeeds or fails.”

How to check and manage costs before sending
- Check a current estimator shortly before sending. Ethereum.org lists Etherscan Gas Tracker, Blockscout, and ETH Gas Tracker among monitoring options. Treat their readings as estimates tied to changing conditions, not guarantees; Ethereum.org does not rank them.
- Review the transaction in your wallet. Confirm the network and destination, then inspect the displayed gas limit, max fee, and priority fee before approving an unfamiliar contract interaction. Wallets commonly estimate fees automatically, but the displayed parameters still matter.
- Choose urgency with the trade-off in mind. The priority fee is a tip that can influence inclusion priority. Lowering it may affect how quickly a transaction is included; no universal tip or confirmation time applies.
- Do not cut the gas limit arbitrarily. The limit is an execution budget, not a way to reduce the computation an operation requires. Setting it too low can lead to rejection or a failed execution.
- Separate gas from other charges. A wallet, exchange, bridge, or application may add its own costs or present fees differently. Protocol gas describes the on-chain transaction fee, not every charge associated with using a service.
When a Layer 2 may make sense
Rollups can batch activity and spread fixed costs across users, making a suitable transaction less costly than performing it directly on Ethereum mainnet. Layer 2 transactions still have network-specific fees, which can include operator costs. There is no supported universal ranking of the cheapest network: compare the actual transaction cost and confirm that the application and destination support the network you choose. Ethereum.org’s Layer 2 overview describes the category.
Before moving assets, consider the total current transaction cost, wallet compatibility, whether the action is supported on the chosen network, and the costs and requirements of moving assets between networks. A lower fee for one transaction does not by itself establish that switching networks is worthwhile for your situation.
