At ET Alpha Wealth Summit 2.0, Radhika Gupta’s message was that investors should choose a financial product for the problem it addresses—not because it is new, popular, or near the top of a performance ranking. For anyone considering a Specialised Investment Fund (SIF), that means understanding the strategy, risks, tax treatment and portfolio role before investing.
Start with the investor need, not the product label
Gupta, MD & CEO of Edelweiss Mutual Fund, put the principle plainly: “A good financial product is not an ETF or a SIF or an MF; it is a target for a problem,” as quoted by The Economic Times.

That reverses a common shopping habit. Rather than start with a product category or recent ranking, define the job you need your investments to do. It might be to pursue long-term growth, add a particular kind of income strategy, or complement an existing allocation. Then ask whether the specific product’s stated objective and approach actually serve that job.

What does the SIF label tell you—and what doesn’t it?
A Specialised Investment Fund is a category, not one uniform strategy. SIFs can use different approaches and therefore have different risk-return profiles. A category-wide ranking or performance comparison can obscure those differences: two funds with the same label may pursue materially different objectives and behave differently in favourable or difficult markets.
Gupta’s remarks, as reported by ET, describe derivatives being used for different purposes, including arbitrage, covered-call income strategies and directional positions. Those uses are not interchangeable. The role derivatives play in a particular strategy matters more than their mere presence in its description.

Do not infer from the SIF label that a fund will outperform when markets rise, protect capital when they fall, or behave like a liquid fund. Those outcomes are not guaranteed by the category. Read the scheme’s current documents to understand its own objective, strategy, potential losses and liquidity terms.
How to assess a SIF for your portfolio
- State the purpose. Write down the financial need and the role you expect the investment to play. If you cannot describe that role, pause before comparing products.
- Read the specific strategy. Check the scheme’s stated objective, intended approach and use of derivatives. Identify whether it relies on arbitrage, covered-call income, directional positions or another stated method.
- Consider risk and time horizon. Look at how the strategy could lose money and how it may behave through negative performance periods. Match that possibility to your ability and willingness to stay invested.
- Check taxes, costs and liquidity. Review the current scheme documents and authoritative tax information for the particular structure and your circumstances. The broad category name alone does not settle these details.
- Test the portfolio fit. Consider your existing holdings and allocation. Decide whether the investment would complement or replace something you already own, rather than adding it simply because it is new or highly ranked.
- Get allocation advice where needed. Gupta’s reported recommendation was gradual adoption and consultation with a financial adviser about allocation. A scheme’s suitability depends on the investor’s full circumstances.

The ET report says equity SIFs are taxed broadly like equity mutual funds, debt SIFs follow treatment applicable to debt mutual funds, and hybrid treatment varies with structure. That is a high-level description, not a determination of the tax payable by an individual investor. Tax rules and a scheme’s treatment should be checked against current authoritative material before investing.
The report also attributes approximately ₹38,000 crore in industry SIF assets and approximately ₹14,000 crore in Edelweiss Mutual Fund SIF assets to Gupta at the time of the discussion. These are figures reported from the summit, not independently verified current assets under management.
