Utah mother Erika Diarte-Carr began a GoFundMe after a terminal cancer diagnosis, initially seeking $5,000 to cover funeral expenses and help her children. She said she had no life insurance and could no longer earn income as her health declined. She died in October 2024.

Why did Erika Diarte-Carr start a GoFundMe?

Diarte-Carr said she went to an emergency room on May 7, 2022, the day before Mother’s Day, believing she needed help for a shoulder injury. Doctors diagnosed her with stage 4 small cell lung carcinoma. In her fundraiser, she recalled her doctor telling her, “I hope you have a good support system at home because you’re going to need it.” The clinician was not named in news reports.

As her health worsened, Diarte-Carr said she was unable to work or build savings and did not have life insurance. She set an initial goal of $5,000 to help pay funeral costs and provide support for her children. She described them as her “whole life, light and soul.” The Guardian reported her account, as did FOX 13.

How much did the fundraiser raise?

News reports recorded different totals on different dates; they are snapshots, not a single final or current total.
