The headline is substantially true, but it is not a new August 2026 appointment. Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt took over as CEO of rocket company Relativity Space in March 2025, reportedly after making a significant investment and acquiring a controlling stake. He succeeded co-founder Tim Ellis and is still listed by the company as its Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer.
What happened at Relativity Space?
Relativity Space changed its top leadership in March 2025, when Eric Schmidt became chief executive. Contemporary reporting said the former Google chief also made a substantial investment in the company and took a controlling stake. The exact investment amount, ownership percentage, valuation and transaction structure have not been publicly established in the sources available here.

Schmidt replaced Tim Ellis, who co-founded Relativity Space and had served as its CEO. Ellis did not simply disappear from the organization: TechCrunch reported that he remained involved as a board director.
Relativity Space’s current leadership page continues to identify Schmidt as executive chairman and CEO. That makes “new leader” historically accurate, but potentially misleading if it suggests the change happened recently.

Who is Eric Schmidt?
Schmidt was Google’s CEO from 2001 through 2011 and later served as the company’s executive chairman. He became known for helping manage and scale Google while co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin were still relatively young executives. His later work has included technology investment, philanthropy, advising and technology-policy activity.
That background matters to Relativity Space because rocket companies require enormous amounts of capital, complex hiring and supplier coordination, long development cycles and close relationships with government and commercial customers. Schmidt brings experience as a technology-company operator, investor and strategist.
He is not, however, being presented as a career rocket engineer. His challenge is to lead an aerospace hardware company through testing, regulatory approvals, manufacturing and flight operations—areas where software-company experience alone cannot guarantee success.

The company became particularly associated with additive manufacturing, commonly described as 3D printing, for rocket components and production infrastructure. But calling it only a 3D-printing startup misses the larger business. Relativity Space is trying to build launch vehicles and develop a repeatable commercial-launch operation.
Its first rocket, Terran 1, flew in March 2023 but did not reach orbit. The company’s next major program is Terran R, a substantially larger and more capable vehicle intended to compete in the commercial launch market.
Why Terran R is central to the leadership change
When Schmidt took over, Relativity Space was preparing for the difficult transition from startup development to orbital-launch execution. Contemporary reporting said Terran R was targeting a 2026 debut. That was a target announced around the leadership change, not proof of a completed launch or a guaranteed schedule.

The meaningful test will be whether Relativity Space can produce flight hardware, complete engine and stage testing, obtain the necessary approvals, prepare its launch site, fly successfully, serve customers and repeat the process at commercially sustainable costs.
Why Schmidt’s investment matters
The leadership change was not merely a routine executive hire. A controlling investment can provide capital and potentially extend a company’s financial runway during an expensive development phase. It also gives the investor a direct financial stake in the company’s survival and performance.
Schmidt’s profile could help Relativity Space attract employees, customers, strategic partners and additional financing. His technology-policy and national-security background may also be relevant as commercial launch companies pursue government and national-security opportunities.
There are trade-offs. Rocket development is constrained by physics, testing, manufacturing quality, safety reviews and regulation; it cannot be accelerated simply by applying the playbook of a rapidly scaling software company. A high-profile executive may open doors, but successful launches still depend on engineering and operational execution.

There is also a governance question whenever a company has a controlling investor who serves as CEO and executive chairman. The public information available here does not establish the full ownership or board structure, so it would be premature to draw conclusions about how decisions are made.
What happened to Tim Ellis?
Ellis stepped down as CEO when Schmidt took over, but reporting indicated that he continued as a board director. The available evidence supports describing this as a change in operational leadership—not as proof that Ellis was fired or left the company entirely.
His continuing connection may provide some organizational continuity, while Schmidt takes responsibility for capital, strategy and execution. The practical importance of that arrangement will depend on how responsibilities are divided between the board, Schmidt and the company’s engineering and operating leadership.

How to judge whether the strategy is working
Schmidt’s reputation and investment are signals, not results. A useful assessment should focus on measurable milestones:

- BUILD IT. COUNT DOWN. LAUNCH IT 10 FEET: Kids build their own realistic rocket and durable launcher from precision-cut wooden parts — then press the red launch button and watch it blast up to 10 feet into the air. No batteries, no electricity — pure mechanical action. Winner of the 2025 Parents Choice Award. Designed for kids ages 6 to 12.
- REAL ROCKET SCIENCE — SERIOUSLY: Every launch teaches Newton's Third Law of Motion — action and reaction — in the most tangible way possible. Kids also discover how rocket propulsion works, what forces keep a rocket on course, and why aerodynamic design matters. These are the same principles behind actual space missions, learned through building and launching.
- SAFE FOR INDOOR LAUNCHING: The rocket's soft foam tip makes it safe to launch indoors — no need for a backyard or outdoor space. Kids can blast off in the living room, bedroom, or classroom without any risk to people or furniture. The launcher is stable, the rocket is lightweight, and the thrill is completely real.
- STEM SKILLS BUILT INTO EVERY STEP: Assembling the rocket and launcher teaches structural engineering, spatial reasoning, and mechanical thinking before a single launch takes place. Kids follow illustrated step-by-step instructions to complete the build independently — developing patience, precision, and confidence in their own ability to make things work.
- RELAUNCHABLE, REPLAYABLE, ENDLESSLY FUN: This isn't a one-shot toy. Kids reload, relaunch, and experiment — adjusting angle, force, and technique to see how high and how far the rocket goes each time. Every launch is a new experiment. Every tweak teaches something new about physics, force, and flight.
- Hardware: engine and stage testing, vehicle integration and production progress.
- Launch readiness: site preparation, safety reviews, range coordination and regulatory approvals.
- Financial durability: new capital, cash runway, supplier stability, workforce continuity and production-cost control.
- Commercial traction: customer contracts, launch backlog and government or national-security opportunities.
- Repeatability: whether the company can launch reliably and improve its economics after the first flight.
These measures matter more than Schmidt’s former title at Google. A successful launch, profitability and lasting market share remain outcomes to be demonstrated, not consequences guaranteed by the appointment.
Important uncertainties
Several details remain unresolved in the available reporting: the precise size of Schmidt’s investment, his exact ownership percentage, Relativity Space’s valuation, his day-to-day operating responsibilities relative to other executives and the final timing of Terran R’s first launch.
The 2026 launch target should therefore be treated as a historical target unless confirmed by a current launch record or company update. Readers tracking the program should consult Relativity Space’s press-release archive and current launch reporting rather than assuming that an announced schedule has been met.

Do not confuse Relativity Space with Relativity
Relativity Space is the rocket and aerospace company. It is separate from Relativity, a legal-technology and e-discovery business. The latter’s leadership page identifies Phil Saunders as CEO, not Eric Schmidt. Using the full name “Relativity Space” avoids an easy but significant company-name mix-up.
The bottom line
Eric Schmidt has led Relativity Space since March 2025 after succeeding co-founder Tim Ellis and reportedly taking a controlling stake. He remains listed as executive chairman and CEO. The move gave Relativity Space a prominent technology executive and a potentially important source of capital as it develops Terran R.
But the appointment is best understood as a strategic and financial intervention, not evidence that the rocket company has solved its technical or commercial challenges. The real verdict will come from Terran R’s testing and launch performance, regulatory progress, customer demand, financial durability and ability to operate repeatedly—not from Schmidt’s Google résumé alone.
