Best February 2025 picks at a glance
| Category | Plan snapshot | Why it stood out | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best overall value | iD Mobile: 60GB for £10 a month, monthly rolling | Large allowance, low price, rollover and bill-capping features | Uses Three, so coverage must be checked locally |
| Best cheap flexible plan | Smarty: 50GB for £8 a month, monthly rolling | Very low cost and easy to cancel | Three network and fewer child-specific controls |
| Best O2-based rolling plan | giffgaff: 20GB for £10 a month | Flexible monthly service on O2 | Less parent-focused account management |
| Best for social media | VOXI: 45GB for £10 a month, with selected unlimited social apps | Supported social usage does not consume the main allowance | App passes have exclusions |
| Best for streaming | VOXI: 140GB for £15 a month, with selected unlimited social, music and video apps | Useful for frequent streaming away from Wi-Fi | Not all websites, services or content qualify |
| Best family discount | O2: 150GB for £19.99 a month over 24 months; up to 20% off eligible additional SIMs | One bill and a family discount for existing O2 customers | Usually costs more than budget MVNOs |
| Best cashback deal | Vodafone via Mobiles.co.uk: 200GB for £15 a month over 24 months, with £168 cashback | Potential effective cost of about £8 a month | Cashback must be claimed correctly and on time |
| Best safety-first option | EE Safer SIM | Built-in controls, scam-call protection and spending limits that cannot be disabled from the child’s line | Not necessarily the cheapest option; current prices must be checked separately |
The February 2025 price comparison is based primarily on the Tech Advisor comparison dated 11 February 2025. The recommendations are category-based: there is no single best SIM for every child.
How much data does a child need?
Do not assume that a large data allowance is automatically better value. A child who mainly uses Wi-Fi may need only 1GB to 3GB, while a teenager watching video or using a phone as a hotspot could use 50GB or more.

| Monthly data | Suitable for |
|---|---|
| 1–3GB | Calls, messaging, occasional maps and light browsing, with Wi-Fi used most of the time |
| 5–10GB | Regular messaging, music, maps, social media and occasional video |
| 15–30GB | Frequent social media, music and some video away from Wi-Fi |
| 50GB or more | Heavy video, hotspot use, gaming downloads or unreliable home broadband |
| Unlimited | Only when the child regularly exceeds large allowances or uses the phone as a hotspot |
Video streaming is usually the fastest way to exhaust mobile data. A new phone can also consume more data than expected through photo backup, app updates and autoplay. Check the child’s usage after the first month before moving to a more expensive plan.
The best February 2025 deals in detail
iD Mobile: best overall value
The February snapshot listed 60GB for £10 a month on a monthly rolling contract, as well as unlimited data for £16 a month over 24 months. iD Mobile used the Three network and offered data rollover.
This was the strongest value candidate for a child who needed a generous allowance at a low price. Its child-relevant features included bill capping, unlimited minutes and texts and rollover of unused data. Current iD Mobile information says rollover lasts only into the following month, so it should not be treated as permanent storage.
Choose it when: Three coverage is strong at home, school and along the child’s usual route, and you want plenty of data without a long contract.
Watch for: the February 2025 60GB offer may no longer exist, a bill cap may need configuring, and current plans should not be presented as the historical offer. See iD Mobile’s current SIM-only page for live availability.
Smarty: best cheap flexible option
The February comparison listed 50GB for £8 a month on a monthly rolling plan and 300GB for £17. Smarty also offered data-discount plans that could reduce the price when less data was used.
Its main advantage was flexibility: parents could avoid a 12- or 24-month commitment while keeping the monthly cost low.

- No Activation Fee. No Credit Check. No Contract. You have the option to port-in (keep) your existing phone number or get a new number upon activation. FREE Mobile App to manage your account
Watch for: rolling-plan terms can change, and Smarty generally offers fewer dedicated child-management features than a safety-focused product such as EE Safer SIM.
giffgaff: best flexible O2-based alternative
The February snapshot listed 20GB for £10 a month on a monthly rolling plan and 120GB for £20 a month over 18 months. giffgaff operates on the O2 network and also offers pay-as-you-go options.
This suited a child with moderate data needs when the parent wanted flexibility and O2 coverage. It was less suitable where the parent needed tightly managed multi-line administration or built-in child controls.

Choose it when: O2 works reliably at the child’s main locations and you want to avoid a long commitment.
Watch for: the current offer may differ from the February 2025 snapshot. Check giffgaff’s current plans before buying.
VOXI: best for social media and streaming
The February comparison listed 45GB for £10 a month with unlimited selected social-media use, and 140GB for £15 a month with unlimited selected social, music and video services. The plans were 30-day rolling contracts.
VOXI could be good value for a teenager whose usage is concentrated in supported apps. However, “unlimited social” or “unlimited video” does not mean unlimited internet use. VOXI’s terms explain that third-party adverts, websites, apps and other excluded content may still use the ordinary allowance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Watch for: app passes do not replace parental controls, and Vodafone coverage should be checked. See VOXI’s current plan details for the present list of supported services.
O2 Family: best for an existing O2 household
The February comparison included a 150GB O2 plan at £19.99 a month over 24 months, with six months of a selected entertainment or security subscription. O2 Family offered up to 20% off additional eligible Pay Monthly SIMs.
This can be convenient when the household already uses O2 and values one bill, family administration and the discount. It is not necessarily the cheapest way to buy a child’s data if a budget MVNO offers adequate coverage.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Choose it when: you already have an eligible O2 relationship and want to manage several lines together.
Watch for: entertainment perks can make a plan look better than it is if the family would not otherwise pay for them, and a 24-month contract may be too long for a first phone. Check O2 Family’s current eligibility rules.
Vodafone cashback: potentially cheap, but higher risk
The February deal was a 200GB Vodafone plan at £15 a month for 24 months, with £168 cashback claimed through Mobiles.co.uk. If every claim succeeded, the effective cost would be about £8 a month.
Do not describe this as an £8-a-month contract. The contractual price was £15 a month. The lower figure depended on submitting the correct bills within each claim window.

- Punch out the 3 in 1 ready to use SIM card. Standard SIM, Micro SIM and Nano SIM.
Risks: cashback may not be automatic; a missed deadline, incorrect bill or rejected claim can remove the expected saving. The 24-month commitment remains even if payment is delayed or refused.
Child-specific SIM or cheap adult SIM?
A cheap adult SIM is often the better value option for an older teenager when the parent is prepared to configure the phone and monitor usage. It usually offers more data for less money and is easier to replace or switch.
A dedicated child plan can be worth paying more for when safety and spending control matter more than data per pound. EE’s Safer SIM is the clearest example in the research. EE describes built-in parental controls, scam-call protection, spending limits that cannot be turned off from the child’s line, and usage visibility through its app. It also says that controls apply on the EE mobile network, not automatically on Wi-Fi, and do not block every type of in-app content.
| Choose a cheap adult SIM when… | Choose a child-specific SIM when… |
|---|---|
| Price and data are the main priorities | The child is young or vulnerable online |
| The parent will configure Screen Time or Family Link | You want controls that are harder for the child to disable |
| You want a rolling contract and easy switching | Scam-call protection and account oversight matter |
| You are comfortable managing caps and roaming manually | You prefer safety features built into the network plan |
What a SIM can—and cannot—control
Network-level controls may block adult-rated websites, restrict content categories, limit out-of-plan spending and block some scam calls. They do not make the entire phone safe.
A mobile-network filter generally does not protect the child when the phone is connected to home broadband, school Wi-Fi, public Wi-Fi or a friend’s hotspot. It may also fail to control content inside social-media apps, messaging services and games. VPNs and Apple Private Relay can further limit what a network filter can see.
Use the network controls alongside device controls:
- iPhone: Apple Screen Time and Family Sharing can help manage app installation, purchases, web content, communication and screen time. Exact menus vary by iOS version.
- Android: Google Family Link can help with app approvals, usage limits, location sharing and content settings. Features vary by device and Android version.
- Home broadband: configure the provider’s family filter separately, remembering that no filter catches every harmful page, message, image or interaction.
How to prevent unexpected bills
- Choose a plan with bill capping or a spending limit.
- Set the cap to £0 if the child must not incur any out-of-plan charges. Use a small emergency allowance only if you accept the risk.
- Disable premium-rate services and international calls where possible.
- Check whether picture messages, special numbers, roaming and calls to non-UK numbers are included.
- Turn off mobile-data roaming unless it is needed.
- Enable provider usage alerts and set a mobile-data warning on the phone.
- Review the first two bills rather than assuming every extra is blocked.
A £0 cap is strong protection but can prevent emergency data or calls outside the allowance. Decide whether the child needs a small controlled buffer.

Rolling, 12-month, 18-month or 24-month?
| Term | Best for | Main risk |
|---|---|---|
| 30-day rolling | First phones, uncertain usage, testing coverage or families likely to move | Promotional terms can change and cancellation must be managed |
| 12-month | A stable allowance with moderate commitment | Less flexibility if the child’s needs change |
| 18-month | A larger allowance where usage is predictable | More liability than a rolling plan |
| 24-month | A genuinely strong fixed price or a benefit the family will use | Coverage, usage and the child’s needs may change during the term |
For a very young child or a first phone, a rolling plan is usually safer than committing for two years. A long contract can be reasonable only after checking coverage and confirming that the allowance is genuinely needed.

- 5G plans starting from $4/month
- Unlimited Premium plan with up to 10 GB International Data

Coverage should come before price
Check the network at the child’s home, school and usual travel route. Test indoors as well as outdoors, and check 4G as well as 5G. Ask whether the specific plan supports 5G.
Network families include EE, O2, Three and Vodafone, but providers using the same underlying network can differ in roaming, speeds, customer service, priority and plan restrictions. A rolling SIM is useful for testing coverage before accepting a 12- or 24-month commitment.
- iD Mobile and Smarty use Three.
- giffgaff uses O2.
- VOXI uses Vodafone.
- EE Safer SIM uses EE.
Roaming and family holidays
Before travel, check whether EU roaming is included, the fair-use data limit and whether the spending cap must be raised. Also check whether roaming is disabled on the particular child plan.
EE’s Safer SIM information says EU roaming requires a cap above £0, while roaming is disabled on its pay-as-you-go Guided plan. Current iD Mobile information describes inclusive roaming in 50 destinations with a 30GB fair-use data limit, but that current rule should not be assumed to have applied to the February 2025 deal.
Be especially careful near borders, on ferries and outside the UK, where accidental roaming can create charges.
Before-you-buy checklist
- Check coverage at home, school and along the regular route.
- Confirm that the handset is unlocked and compatible with the chosen network.
- Choose an allowance based on actual usage, not the largest headline number.
- Set a £0 or controlled spending cap.
- Check premium-rate calls, picture messages and international charges.
- Confirm roaming rules and fair-use limits.
- Configure Screen Time or Google Family Link.
- Configure home broadband filtering separately.
- Read the exact terms for unlimited app passes and data rollover.
- Compare the total cost across the minimum term, including price changes and any cashback.
- For cashback, record every deadline and keep copies of submitted bills.
Final recommendations
Choose iD Mobile or Smarty for value if Three coverage is strong. Choose giffgaff for a flexible O2-based plan. Choose VOXI when the teenager mainly uses its supported social, music or video apps. Choose O2 Family when consolidating an existing O2 household is valuable. Choose a child-specific option such as EE Safer SIM when built-in controls and spending protection matter more than the lowest price per gigabyte.
Whichever plan you choose, the safest setup combines a suitable data allowance, a spending cap, device-level controls, Wi-Fi filtering and a network that works reliably where the child actually spends time.
