Emirates’ time-lapse video documents engineers refurbishing the airline’s first updated Boeing 777 cabin. The aircraft entered service on flight EK 83 to Geneva on 7 August 2024, after a 37-day refit, according to Emirates’ launch announcement.
What the Emirates refurbishment time-lapse shows
The video follows the cabin transformation: Emirates engineers strip out the existing interior, install cabin components and finish the refurbished spaces. The work was part of a full cabin retrofit, not simply a seat replacement. Emirates reported that the first aircraft took 37 days and 18,000 man-hours to complete—four days less than the airline’s announced deployment schedule.
The scale of the job is reflected in materials Emirates said it used on that aircraft: 330 square metres of carpet, 340 laminate sheets, 8,000 square feet of leather, 800 metres of Economy seat fabric and 300 litres of paint. These are figures for the first refurbished 777, not a standard bill of materials for every aircraft in the wider programme.
When did the first refurbished 777 fly to Geneva?
Emirates announced on 7 August 2024 that its first refurbished 777 was preparing to operate EK 83 to Geneva that day. The schedule had shifted forward from the airline’s 1 July announcement, which forecast Geneva service on EK 83/84 from 11 August and named Tokyo Haneda and Brussels among the initial cities. The aircraft’s first service therefore preceded that original Geneva forecast.

On 13 August 2024, Dubai Media Office reported another planned step: from 22 September, Geneva was to become the first Emirates city served by the refurbished 777 on all flights. That was a dated rollout milestone, not a guarantee about today’s Geneva aircraft assignment or schedule. Route deployments can change.
What changed inside the first refurbished aircraft?
The first aircraft gained a new Premium Economy cabin, a refreshed Business Class and an updated Economy cabin. Emirates’ launch announcement described the configuration and seat details below; those specifications should not be assumed to apply identically to every later refurbished 777.

| Cabin | First-aircraft details in Emirates’ 7 August 2024 announcement |
|---|---|
| Business Class | 38 seats in a 1-2-1 layout, each 20.7 inches wide and convertible to a flat bed up to 78.6 inches long. Emirates also cited direct aisle access, personal mini-bars, charging outlets and 23-inch HD screens. |
| Premium Economy | 24 seats in a 2-4-2 layout. Emirates listed a 19.5-inch seat width, 38-inch pitch, eight inches of recline and six-way adjustable headrests. |
| Economy | Refreshed cabin with 256 seats in the configuration Emirates gave for the first aircraft. |
Seat counts vary across the announcements and should not be merged into a single universal layout. A separate Dubai Media Office description gave a four-class arrangement of six or eight First Class suites, 38 Business seats, 24 Premium Economy seats and 260 Economy seats. Emirates’ first-aircraft release instead specified 256 Economy seats. The difference is a reason to identify the aircraft or announcement when quoting a layout, rather than treating one count as definitive for the entire retrofit fleet.

The Geneva launch was the beginning of a much broader cabin-renewal effort. On 14 July 2026, Emirates reported that it had completed retrofits on 100 aircraft: 47 Airbus A380s and 53 Boeing 777s. The airline said the first 100 aircraft took 4.4 million man-hours over 44 months.

In that July 2026 update, Emirates expected to refurbish about 20 additional aircraft by the end of December 2026 as part of a programme covering 219 aircraft. That number was a forecast published in July, not confirmation that the additional work was subsequently completed.
Earlier, in November 2025, Emirates announced a next phase covering 60 A380s and 51 777s, with a planned start in August 2026 and upgrades to onboard products, in-flight entertainment and Starlink connectivity. Because that announced start date has passed, it should be understood as the plan stated at the time, not evidence that the phase has been delivered.
