How much did Elon Musk donate to #TeamTrees?
The Arbor Day Foundation named Musk among a group of prominent technology leaders who donated between 200,000 and 1,000,001 trees each. That range applies to the group; the Foundation’s announcement does not state Musk’s personal amount. It would be inaccurate to assign him a specific figure from that announcement. Musk was a notable supporter, not the campaign’s sole funder. #TeamTrees was a creator-led fundraising effort that brought together many donors, from major tech figures to people making small contributions. How did #TeamTrees reach its $20 million goal?
The campaign launched on October 25, 2019, after the online community challenged YouTuber MrBeast, Jimmy Donaldson, to help plant 20 million trees. Mark Rober and other creators helped lead the effort. The Arbor Day Foundation announced the $20 million milestone on December 19—56 days after launch. Donations went to the Arbor Day Foundation. #TeamTrees says each dollar funds one tree in a high-need forest. That fundraising measure should not be confused with the number of trees already in the ground: planting took place over time, after the campaign began. #TeamTrees
Did the campaign actually plant 20 million trees?
Yes. The campaign’s current FAQ says planting of the original 20 million began in January 2020 and was completed and verified by a third-party auditor in October 2022. This is the reported completion of the original campaign goal, distinct from the 2019 fundraising milestone. #TeamTrees FAQ

Later planting totals are higher than the original target. As of October 8, 2026, Beast Philanthropy’s project page reported more than 25 million trees planted, including a displayed total of 25,146,527+. The different figures reflect different dates and measures: dollars donated, trees projected for planting, trees physically planted by a given date, and later cumulative planting. The Arbor Day Foundation reported in June 2021 that more than 8 million trees had been planted and expected planting of the original 20 million to finish by the end of 2022; the campaign subsequently reported the October 2022 completion and verification. Where were #TeamTrees trees planted?
The initial projects announced in January 2020 included California, Kenya and India. The Arbor Day Foundation described wildfire recovery in California, restoration around springs and rivers in Kenya’s Kijabe Forest, and reforestation and agroforestry in India’s Cauvery River Basin. The campaign identifies the Arbor Day Foundation as the recipient of donations.
