Elon Musk teased a free month of Tesla Full Self-Driving for cars in North America on May 8, 2023. It was a future plan, not a launch notice: he gave no start date or complete eligibility rules. Tesla later offered separate, limited trials, including a software-triggered v14 promotion and a delivery-linked trial for some new buyers. Neither amounts to a permanent free FSD program, and Tesla’s FSD (Supervised) still requires an attentive driver.
What did Musk promise in 2023?
In a post reported on May 8, 2023, Musk said Tesla would first make FSD “super smooth,” then offer a free month to all cars in North America. He described a broader international rollout as a later step, after the system worked well on local roads and regulators approved it. TechCrunch’s contemporaneous report reproduced the statement.
The promise did not specify a launch date, define “all cars,” set a hardware cutoff, or explain how existing FSD purchasers and subscribers would be treated. It also did not state whether a trial would roll into a paid subscription. It should therefore be read as an outline of a possible promotion, not proof that every Tesla owner was entitled to a free month.
What free trials did Tesla offer later?
Tesla’s later programs have their own terms. They should not be treated as a retroactive fulfillment of every detail in Musk’s broad 2023 wording.

Software-triggered v14 trial
Tesla’s v14 trial support page describes a complimentary FSD (Supervised) v14 trial for eligible owners in the United States, Puerto Rico, Mexico and Canada. It lists Model S, Model 3, Model X, Model Y and Cybertruck, and requires software version 14.2 or later. The trial begins when the qualifying software is installed; Tesla says it cannot be saved for later.
A specialist publication reported that the North American promotion launched in late November 2025 and was aimed primarily at vehicles with newer HW4 hardware. That hardware detail is secondary reporting, not a complete Tesla-published eligibility table; check the vehicle’s own software and account offer rather than assuming eligibility from the model name alone. Not a Tesla App’s report covers the rollout.

Trial for some new owners
Tesla separately advertises a 30-day FSD (Supervised) trial for eligible buyers taking delivery directly from Tesla. The available offer can vary by model and trim, so the order flow and new-owner trial terms are more reliable than assuming every new vehicle includes it.
Who may qualify for the v14 offer?
The v14 support page names these markets and models, but model eligibility alone does not guarantee a trial. Tesla does not provide a complete public VIN-by-VIN hardware eligibility list on that page.

These rules apply to the v14 promotion, not automatically to the new-owner offer. For a new-owner trial, Tesla says the vehicle must be purchased and delivered directly by Tesla; third-party purchases do not qualify. The trial starts at delivery and cannot be saved. An active FSD subscription generally excludes a buyer from that particular offer, and referral benefits may be incompatible with it. Check the terms attached to the specific order.
If the offer does not appear, possible explanations include the market, software, hardware, subscription or purchase status, or a promotion that has ended or changed. Tesla’s public terms do not resolve every vehicle- or account-specific case; confirm eligibility in the Tesla app or with Tesla support.

How to install and activate the v14 trial
- Connect the vehicle to Wi-Fi and wait for an eligible update to version 14.2 or later. Tesla recommends Wi-Fi for updates and says owners cannot request that an update be pushed individually.
- Once the qualifying software is installed, open Controls → Self-Driving → Full Self-Driving (Supervised) on the touchscreen.
- Review and accept the user agreements. The trial starts when the qualifying software is installed, so do not install it assuming the trial can be held for a more convenient date.
What happens when a trial ends, and what does FSD cost?
Tesla’s support materials list FSD (Supervised) at US$99 per month in the United States, subject to change. That figure is not a confirmed price for Canada or Mexico. See Tesla’s FSD support page and subscription instructions for current details.
Do not assume every trial automatically becomes a paid subscription—or that none does. Tesla says a paid FSD subscription can begin after a new-owner trial if the buyer selected that subscription with the order. Check the subscription selection, billing terms and cancellation controls in the Tesla account or order before the trial ends. Prices and availability can change.

FSD (Supervised) is not autonomous driving
Tesla requires the driver to remain attentive and says FSD (Supervised) does not make the vehicle autonomous. Its driver-assistance features can help with driving tasks, but a trial is not permission to stop monitoring the road or to rely on the car as a driverless service. Tesla explains the supervision requirement on its FSD support page.
Why offer a free trial?
A trial can let potential buyers experience a paid software feature before deciding whether to subscribe, and it gives Tesla another way to promote FSD alongside vehicle sales. TechCrunch also discussed the possibility that wider use could provide more real-world driving data to help improve the system; that is an interpretation of a possible benefit, not a confirmed statement of Tesla’s internal motive. Tesla’s current offers page shows how trials can appear as part of sales promotions, but it does not establish conversion rates.
For someone considering a Tesla but not eligible for an owner trial, a Tesla demo drive is another way to experience a vehicle. It is not equivalent to a month-long trial, and availability depends on location and vehicle selection.
