“Absolutely hard core” was Elon Musk’s phrase for reducing headcount and costs. On April 30, 2024, The Information reported that Tesla planned further cuts affecting named teams, including roughly 500 people in its Supercharger group. Those reports followed Tesla’s separate April 15 announcement of a global workforce reduction of more than 10 percent. The roughly 500 figure was a reported team estimate, not a confirmed total for all subsequent cuts.
What Musk meant by “absolutely hard core”
In an internal email to senior executives reported by The Information, Musk wrote: “We need to be absolutely hard core about headcount and cost reduction.” The phrase described a push to reduce staffing and costs; it was not a public, itemized account of every role affected. Reuters relayed The Information’s reporting on the planned departures and Supercharger cuts. The Information’s report and Reuters’ coverage provide the contemporaneous accounts.

How the April cuts differed from Tesla’s wider restructuring
| Event | Timing and scope | What is established |
|---|---|---|
| Company-wide restructuring | Announced April 15, 2024; global workforce | Tesla’s SEC filing said headcount would be reduced by more than 10% globally. The filing did not state a final number of completed layoffs. Tesla’s SEC filing. |
| Additional team-specific cuts reported | Reported April 30, 2024; named teams and leaders | The Information reported planned departures for two senior leaders and roughly 500 planned layoffs in the Supercharger group. The sources do not establish a verified total for all later cuts. The Information’s report. |
Tesla had 140,473 employees at the end of 2023, according to figures cited by the Associated Press. The AP described the earlier, more-than-10-percent reduction as potentially affecting about 14,000 workers. That is an approximate calculation against the year-end workforce—not a company-reported count of people actually laid off. The AP’s April coverage gives that context.

Supercharger organization
The Information reported that Rebecca Tinucci, senior director of Tesla’s Supercharger group, would leave and that roughly 500 people in her group were slated for layoffs. This is a reported estimate attributed to Musk’s email, not an independently audited figure or the total for every Tesla team affected.

New-vehicle organization
The Information also reported that Daniel Ho, head of new vehicles, would leave. The contemporaneous reporting named his planned departure but did not provide a team-by-team tally of additional cuts associated with his organization.

Despite the reported cuts, Musk said Tesla would continue building some new Superchargers, at a slower pace, while focusing more on uptime and expanding existing locations. The Associated Press quoted him on May 1, 2024: “just at a slower pace for new locations and more focus on 100% uptime and expansion of existing locations.” This was his stated plan at the time; the cited reports do not establish how it was implemented afterward. Quick Recap
What the reports do—and do not—establish
- The more-than-10-percent global reduction was formally announced in Tesla’s April 15 filing; the approximately 14,000 figure was an estimate, not a confirmed completed-layoff count.
- The later reports identified planned departures for Tinucci and Ho and an estimated 500 planned Supercharger-group layoffs.
- The reporting does not establish a final audited count for the later cuts across Tesla, nor does it give a specific rationale for each team’s decisions.
