On February 27, 2025, Elon Musk suggested raising compensation for members of Congress and senior government employees to reduce incentives for corruption. That was his proposed rationale—not a proven result: the available reporting does not establish whether higher pay reduces corruption or by how much.

Would higher salaries reduce corruption?
Musk’s argument is that higher compensation could make corrupt conduct less attractive compared with lawful public service. The reviewed reporting documents his suggestion, but provides no independent estimate of the savings from a pay increase, the cost of corruption, or a measured causal effect between official pay and corruption. It therefore cannot show whether the proposal would work or quantify its impact.
To assess a specific pay proposal, a policy analysis would need to identify which offices and employees it covers, the amount and timing of any increase, its cost to the public budget, and whether corruption outcomes changed afterward. The available reporting does not supply comparative outcome data.

What was the separate claim about officials’ wealth?
