Elon Musk called The New York Times’ May 30, 2025 report about his alleged drug use during the 2024 presidential campaign a lie. The Times reported that his use went beyond occasional ketamine and included other substances; Musk denied taking drugs currently and said he had tried prescription ketamine years earlier but had not used it since. The competing accounts remain disputed.
What The New York Times reported
The Times reported that Musk’s drug consumption during the 2024 presidential campaign was more extensive than he had previously acknowledged. As summarized by CBS News and Variety, the investigation named ketamine, ecstasy and psychedelic mushrooms. It also described a medication box containing about 20 pills, some marked in a way resembling Adderall.
Those details are allegations attributed to the Times’ reporting, not independently established facts. The Times said its account drew on interviews and documentary material; the underlying sources and records are not independently assessed here.
What Musk said in response
At an Oval Office event on May 30, 2025, Musk criticized the newspaper’s credibility and declined to address the question directly, saying, “Let’s move on,” according to CBS News.

The next day, Musk posted that he was not taking drugs and accused the Times of lying. In a post reproduced by Variety, he wrote: “I tried prescription ketamine a few years ago and said so on X, so this not even news. It helps for getting out of dark mental holes, but haven’t taken it since then.”
The Times’ public-relations team disputed Musk’s characterization. Variety reproduced its response that the newspaper had offered him multiple opportunities to reply or rebut the reporting before publication, and that he declined. This is the Times’ account of its outreach and Musk’s response, not an independent resolution of the disagreement.

How Musk’s earlier ketamine comments fit
In a March 2024 interview with Don Lemon, Musk said he had a prescription for ketamine and discussed taking it to help with depressive states. He said he did not think he abused it. The Associated Press summarized the interview and quoted Musk saying, “If you’ve used too much ketamine, you can’t really get work done.” (AP)
That earlier acknowledgment concerns prescribed ketamine and does not establish the frequency or scope alleged by the Times, nor does it confirm the report’s claims about other substances. Musk’s May 2025 statement that he had not used ketamine since his earlier prescription is his account of what happened after that interview.

What is established—and what remains disputed
| Question | Public account | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| What did Musk say about ketamine in 2024? | In the Don Lemon interview, Musk said he had a prescription, discussed using ketamine for depressive states and said he did not think he abused it, as summarized by AP. | It establishes that Musk publicly acknowledged prescribed ketamine use; it does not establish the later allegations about frequency or other substances. |
| What did the Times allege in May 2025? | The Times reported more extensive drug use during the 2024 campaign, including ketamine, ecstasy and psychedelic mushrooms, and described a box of about 20 pills, some marked like Adderall. | These are claims attributed to the Times’ investigation. The underlying material is not independently reviewed here. |
| How did Musk respond? | He called the report a lie and said he was not taking drugs, had tried prescription ketamine years earlier and had not used it since. | This establishes Musk’s public denial and account, not whether the Times’ allegations are true. |
The Times said its reporting relied on interviews with a dozen people who knew or worked with Musk, private text messages, legal documents and photographic evidence, according to Variety. That description comes from the Times’ account of its reporting process. Musk’s denial is also part of the public record, but does not by itself disprove the reporting. The available accounts do not settle the truth of the specific allegations, and they do not establish a diagnosis, impairment or effect on Musk’s business decisions.
