Elon Musk left his government role around May 30, 2025, after 130 days as a special government employee. DOGE said it had saved $175 billion, but that headline figure was not a comprehensive audited net saving: a BBC Verify review found only part of the posted total itemized or linked to supporting evidence. The fiscal, operational and business costs of the effort cannot be reduced to one verified dollar figure.
What savings did Musk set out to achieve?
The goal changed as the effort unfolded. The Associated Press reported that Musk’s stated ambition began at $2 trillion, was later reduced to $1 trillion, and then to $150 billion. These were successive targets, not three measurements of savings and not proof that any one target was achieved.
| Stage | Reported ambition | What it tells us |
|---|---|---|
| Initial public goal | $2 trillion | An announced target, not an audited result. |
| Later target | $1 trillion | A revised ambition, as reported by the Associated Press. |
| Later target | $150 billion | A further revision; still a target rather than a verified saving. |
The changing figures matter: comparing the final DOGE claim only with the first, most ambitious target would hide how much the stated goal shifted. The available reporting does not establish one consistent, independently verified measure against which to judge all three targets.
How much did DOGE say it saved, and how much could be checked?
At the end of May 2025, DOGE’s website claimed $175 billion in savings. The Associated Press reported that the posted information contained errors and embellishments. That is DOGE’s self-reported total, not an independently audited accounting of net federal budget savings.
#1 Best Overall
BBC Verify reviewed the DOGE dataset downloaded on May 30, 2025. It found $73.3 billion of the headline total itemized and $44.1 billion linked to a document or other supporting evidence.
| Measure in BBC Verify’s May 30 dataset review | Amount | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| DOGE’s headline claim | $175 billion | The total displayed by DOGE, not an outside audit. |
| Entries itemized | $73.3 billion | About 42% of the headline total, calculated from the reported amounts. |
| Entries linked to a document or other evidence | $44.1 billion | About 25% of the headline total, calculated from the reported amounts. |
Itemization and a document link are checks on traceability, not a full evaluation of whether each entry produced a lasting reduction in federal spending. The $101.7 billion not itemized in the reviewed dataset and the $29.2 billion itemized but not linked to evidence in that snapshot should not automatically be called fictitious; BBC Verify’s findings describe what it could trace in the posted data. They do not establish a comprehensive net fiscal saving, including the budget effects of cancellations, contract changes or other actions.

What costs and consequences are documented?
Government operations
The savings totals do not capture whether agencies could carry out their work effectively during the cuts and reorganizations. The Associated Press reported that experts across the ideological spectrum pointed to a lack of personnel experienced in government operations as one reason DOGE’s effort struggled. That is an expert explanation, not proof of a single cause or a quantified cost to taxpayers.
Political reaction
At the White House departure event on May 30, Musk said his team had become “the DOGE bogeyman,” according to the Associated Press. The phrase captures the public backlash he acknowledged; it does not measure the political or reputational effect in dollars.

Musk’s time and Tesla investor concern
On April 22, 2025, Musk told Tesla investors he expected the time he devoted to DOGE to “drop significantly” in May. CBS News reported that Tesla was down 41% year to date at that point and rose 4% after his announcement. Those dated market movements show investor concern about his focus and the market’s reaction to his statement; they do not prove that DOGE caused Tesla’s share performance or establish a lasting loss to the company or Musk’s other brands.
When did Musk leave, and what does “four months” mean?
Reuters reported that Musk departed his administration role around May 30, 2025, as his 130-day special-government-employee mandate expired. “Four-month blitz” is a rounded description of that period, not an exact count of four calendar months. DOGE’s May 30 savings claim and BBC Verify’s review of the dataset downloaded that day provide a closeout snapshot, not a final audited reckoning of every government action.

Can the total cost of the effort be calculated?
No comprehensive total is established by the figures available here. The record distinguishes three things: changing savings ambitions, DOGE’s own $175 billion claim, and BBC Verify’s narrower checks of which entries were itemized or linked to evidence. It also documents operational concerns and investor questions, but does not provide a causal dollar estimate for disruption to government services, damage to Musk’s brands, or a DOGE-driven change in Tesla’s value. Treating those unlike measures as one balance sheet would imply more certainty than the evidence supports.
