What the ranking shows—and what it does not
Leicester is a pronounced outlier in this estimate
Salary Sport reports Leicester’s estimated annual player wages as 12.2 times Bromley’s. The other 23 entries range from £2,964,000 for AFC Wimbledon to £9,595,820 for Luton Town. This is a comparison within one estimate set, not proof of clubs’ actual payrolls.

Estimated player wages are not the same as accounts-based staff costs
Salary Sport’s ranking estimates player wages. Its separate League One club accounts page reports filed accounts for 19 of the 24 clubs and wage-bill information for 14. The accounts figures use staff-cost categories, which can include more than player wages, and cover different financial years. They should not be substituted into this ranking or treated as directly comparable with its estimates.
The league-wide financial context is separate from the wage estimates
On 7 June 2024, the English Football League said League One clubs’ losses averaged £5 million per club. In the same statement, the EFL reported an average loss of £1.5 million in League Two and said clubs in both divisions acknowledged an “immediate and acute need for reform” to stem rising losses. The £5 million figure is an average loss, not an average League One wage bill. English Football League statement, 7 June 2024.
